Dr. Rebecca Tuvel is Associate Professor and Chair of Philosophy at Rhodes College. She works in feminist philosophy, philosophy of race, and the ethics of identity. Her book project Changing Race: The Ethics and Metaphysics of Transracialism explores the possibility and permissibility of changing one’s race.
In this episode, we talk about feminism, cultural appropriation, the philosophy of race, and animal ethics. We discuss what it means to be a feminist, and why are there so few people identifying as feminists. We talk about feminism and intersectionality today. We discuss if feminism should include trans women. We talk about epistemic exclusions, the historical exclusion of women’s knowledge, and we discuss if there can also be injustices in epistemic inclusion. We discuss if cultural appropriation is a problem. We talk about the philosophy of race, and go through three main different philosophical approaches to race: race anti-realism, social realism, and biological realism. We discuss transracialism, if people can change their race, if they should be allowed to do so, and if it is analogous to changing one’s gender identity. Finally, we talk about animal ethics, and discuss if we should use the knowledge that comes from animal experimentation.

Dr. Alicia Juarrero is President and Founder of VectorAnalytica. Her research in neurophilosophy has been focused on the causal role of context-sensitive constraints in the emergence of mental events such as intentions. She is the author of several books, the most recent one being Context Changes Everything: How Constraints Create Coherence.
In this episode, we focus on Context Changes Everything. We start by discussing the problem of identity, how change is compatible with remaining the same, and why Western science and philosophy cannot deal with the relations between parts and wholes. We talk about coherence, the problem of causation, and Aristotle’s four causes. We discuss what constraints are, and talk about context-independent and context-dependent constraints, and how they apply to the study of infectious diseases. We talk about identity theory, and multiple realizability in neuroscience. Finally, we discuss 4E cognition, and how intentions, thoughts, and beliefs can cause anything.

Dr. Vanessa Bohns is a Professor of Organizational Behavior at Cornell University. Her research focuses broadly on social influence and the psychology of compliance and consent. She is the author of You Have More Influence Than You Think: How We Underestimate Our Power of Persuasion, and Why It Matters.
In this episode, we focus on You Have More Influence Than You Think. We discuss how much we impact other people, and go through topics like compliments; expressing gratitude; the invisibility cloak illusion, and the spotlight effect; what people really pay attention to; audience tuning, and the “saying-is-believing effect”; behavioral contagion; first impressions; assertiveness; the domains where people think they are below-average; how people react to requests; why it’s hard to say “no”, and the example of the MeToo movement; why people in positions of power underestimate the negative impact they have on others; and questions that should not be asked in job interviews. We talk about ways by which we can become more aware and mindful of our influence on others. Finally, we discuss if influencers and gurus are preying on our insecurities to sell their products.

Dr. Sabine Nöbel is a Postdoc at the Martin-Luther University Halle Wittenberg in the group “Animal Ecology“. Her background is in the behavioral ecology of Poeciliids and Drosophila studying non-genetic inheritance of mating preferences using mate-copying, by which females build mating preferences by observing and copying conspecific females’ mate-choice. She studies how new, socially learnt mating preferences can invade a population and persist across generations. Dr. Nöbel is the secretary of ESLR (Association of Early-career Social Learning Researchers) Society.
In this episode, we talk about social learning, mate copying, and culture. We start by discussing social learning from an evolutionary perspective. We get into the specific example of mate copying, and how it occurs in Drosophila. We get into the factors that play a role in it; if rejections are also copied; and how choosers can deceive the copiers. We then talk about social learning, culture, conformity, and traditions in non-human animals, and how to understand culture from a biological perspective. We discuss if mate copying can have implications for the study of evolved mate preferences, and sexual selection. Finally, we discuss if by studying culture and cultural transmission in non-human animals can we get new insights into human culture.

Dr. William Kelly is Professor Emeritus of Anthropology and the Sumitomo Professor Emeritus of Japanese Studies at Yale University. A noted authority on the social and historical anthropology of Japan, Dr. Kelly focused much of his research for two decades on regional society in Japan, based on extensive fieldwork in the Shōnai area of Yamagata Prefecture. He has also written widely on the broader dynamics of class formation in Japanese society. At the same time, much of his research for the past two decades has explored sport and body culture and their significance in modern Japan. He has also written on the history of Japan anthropology and its importance for Japan studies and for sociocultural anthropology.
In this episode, we talk about topics in the sociocultural anthropology of Japan. We discuss the work Dr. Kelly has done on the social organization of the Japanese countryside, particularly in the Shōnai area, and how it might generalize to the rest of Japan. We talk about Tokugawa Japan. We discuss class formation and hierarchy in Japan. We talk about the Japanese economic crisis of the late 80s/early 90s, and some social and economic challenges in contemporary Japan, focusing on singlehood, the hikikomori, and suicide rates. We discuss the study of sports culture, and how it ties to body culture, geopolitics, gender, and race. Finally, we talk about the role and contribution of ethnography and sociocultural anthropology to social science inquiry.

Dr. Kristen Lindquist is a Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Her research seeks to understand the psychological and neural basis of emotions, moods, and feelings. Her ongoing work uses tools from social cognition, physiology, neuroscience, and big data methods to examine how emotions emerge from the confluence of the body, brain, and culture.
In this episode, we start by talking about a multidisciplinary approach to emotions. We discuss if infants really perceive and understand facial configurations as instances of discrete emotion categories, and why there is so much focus on the face. We talk about the cross-cultural study of emotions. We discuss how children acquire emotion concepts. We talk about emotional aging, and an embodied cognitive approach to emotion. We discuss gender variation in the experience of emotion. We talk about moral foundations theory, and an alternative constructionist perspective on the link between morality and emotion. We discuss if some people are more emotionally complex than others. We discuss if people universally essentialize emotions, and research on basic emotions. In this episode, we talk about dynamical approaches in cognitive science. We start by discussing the differences between computational-representational approaches and dynamical approaches in cognitive science. We talk about 4E cognition. We then get into a recent paper by Dr. Hipólito, Mind as Motion, and talk about a shift in psychology towards dynamical approaches, and the role of the sociocultural context. We discuss if psychological experiences have any intrinsic value, and if science is independent of any sociocultural context. Finally, we discuss if AI systems can become human-like if they are not embodied.
