Dr. Christian B. Miller is the A. C. Reid Professor of Philosophy at Wake Forest University. His research is primarily in contemporary ethics and philosophy of religion. He has written for the Wall Street Journal, Dallas Morning News, Slate, Prospect Magazine, Relevant Magazine, Michael Hyatt Magazine, The Conversation, Newsweek, Aeon, Greater Good Magazine, Nautilus Magazine, Fathom Magazine, Institute of Art and Ideas, and Christianity Today. He’s the author of several books, the most recent one being Honesty: The Philosophy and Psychology of a Neglected Virtue.

In this episode, we talk about the virtues of generosity and patience. We start with generosity, and discuss the distinction between generous actions, acting from generosity, and being a generous person. We also discuss if generous actions need to be costly, why motivation matters, if the action needs to be freely done, what makes someone a generous person, and how generous we tend to be. We then get into patience, and talk about the importance of goals, time, emotions, and motivation in patience. We also address general questions about the virtues, including what they are really about – character, or the good they bring to other people -; the difference between continence and virtue; and moral and epistemic/intellectual virtues.

Rebecka Hahnel-Peeters is a PhD student studying human behavior from an adaptationist perspective in the Evolutionary Psychology Lab at the University of Texas at Austin with Dr. David Buss. She joined the Buss Lab after finishing her MA Degree at California State University, Fullerton in Spring 2021. In her Master's thesis, she sought to understand individual differences in rape myth acceptance. She is currently interested in sexual conflict and women's psychological adaptations against sexual exploitation.

In this episode, we talk about rape myth acceptance, strategies against sexual exploitation, and the relationship between evolutionary psychology and evolutionary anthropology. We start by discussing rape myth acceptance; some common rape myths; the Rape Excusing Attitudes and Language Scale; the reproductive self-interest model of morality (RSIMM) as a framework for understanding moral judgments associated with sexual behavior; individual differences in attitudes toward abortion, prostitution, and contraception; and what predicts rape myth acceptance. We then talk about female psychological adaptations against sexual exploitation. Finally, we discuss the relationship between evolutionary psychology and evolutionary anthropology.

Dr. Joseph Errington is Professor of Anthropology at Yale University. He studies language change as a source of insight into the ways languages constitute intimate parts of our everyday lives, and at the same time are foundational for large-scale institutions, social groups, and social dynamics. He has worked mostly in Indonesia, studying Javanese (90 million speakers), Indonesian (250 million speakers) and a range of Malay dialects. He has also worked on questions of language ideology and practice: how conceptions of language can shape and reflect social interests, naturalize images of social groups, and shape everyday ways of talking.

In this episode, we talk about some topics in linguistics. We discuss language ideologies. We talk about the history of linguistics, and its ties to colonialism, including the invention of hierarchies of languages; stripping languages of their sociocultural context, and issues with the Universal Grammar approach; imposing written forms on languages; reducing languages to the versions used by social elites; and the invention of national languages. We also discuss misconceptions about non-standard versions of languages; threats to marginalized languages and their communities; and how these issues manifest in the Javanese and the Indonesian language.

Dr. Geoffrey West is Shannan Distinguished Professor at the Santa Fe Institute. He is a theoretical physicist whose primary interests have been in fundamental questions in physics, especially those concerning the elementary particles, their interactions and cosmological implications. His long-term fascination in general scaling phenomena evolved into a highly productive collaboration on the origin of universal scaling laws that pervade biology from the molecular genomic scale up through mitochondria and cells to whole organisms and ecosystems. He is the author of several books, including Scale: The Universal Laws of Life, Growth, and Death in Organisms, Cities, and Companies.

In this episode, we focus on Scale. We talk about the study of scaling, and what we can learn from it. We talk about regularities (scaling laws), but also different constraints across different scales. We focus a lot on biological systems, and talk about metabolic rates, growth, longevity, and aging and death. We discuss if and how we could extend our lifespans. We also discuss why we need a science of cities and urbanization, with the future of humanity and the planet in mind.

Dr. Tibor Rutar is Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Maribor, Slovenia, Researcher at the Center for the Study of Post-Socialist Societies in Maribor, and Researcher at the Research Center for Strategy and Governance at the University of Ljubljana. His last two books are Rational Choice and Democratic Government: A Sociological Approach (Routledge, 2021) and Capitalism for Realists: Virtues and Vices of the Modern Economy (Routledge, 2022).

This time, we focus on Rational Choice and Democratic Government. We talk about how old democracies are. We define liberal democracy, and talk about political and civil rights. We discuss the rise of democracies, the recent “democratic recession”, and the 2008 economic crisis. We discuss how levels of democracy are evaluated. We get into rational choice theory, self-interest, and incentives. We discuss explanations for the rise and spread of democracy. We talk about voting behavior, and discuss how much we should worry about average voters being uninformed. We discuss how both market failure and government failure occur. We talk about where public choice analyses fail. We discuss if democracy contributes to peace. Finally, we discuss if Francis Fukuyama was right, and if we should expect liberal-democratic capitalist societies to be more successful than authoritarian state-capitalist societies.

  • I Need Help (5 and ½ Years of The Dissenter)

I need help. Since last February, when I last asked for support, some more patrons had to cancel their support because their financial situation changed. I have been helped by a few donations over these last months, but I stand at $715 of support by the time of the recording of this video (July 31st), and I need to go up to $900 to keep the channel/podcast sustainable.

Over the past 5 years and a half, I’ve already released 817 interviews, have already done 865 interviews, and already have new interviews scheduled until December 2023.

All of the work for the channel and podcast is done by me alone, and it takes a lot of time to prepare each interview.

I’ve been doing my very best to bring you rigorous interviews on Science and Philosophy.

I am very thankful for all kinds of support I’ve gotten from people over the years.

The only thing I want is to be able to continue doing this work, which has been extremely rewarding.

If you like what I am doing, and if you can support me, please do it. I need your financial support.

I am leaving the links to my Patreon page and to PayPal, if you can so kindly support me there. You also get all sorts of benefits on Patreon.

Dr. Raymond Hames is Professor of Anthropology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. His research interests are in behavioral ecology, food and labor exchange, human ecology, marriage, and kin and parental

investment. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences (anthropology section), past-president of the Evolutionary Anthropology Society of the American Anthropological Association, consulting editor for Human Nature, and for ten years he served as treasurer of the Human Behavior and Evolution Society.

In this episode, we talk about topics in evolutionary anthropology and human behavioral ecology. We first talk about male hunting, and what we can learn about human sociality by studying it. We discuss if hunting peoples are conservationists. We talk about the costs and benefits of monogamy and polygyny for women, and what explains polyandry. We discuss human warfare, the debate between the “deep-rooters” and the “shallow-rooters”, and Chagnon’s argument that Unokai have more wives and children than others. We talk about male androphilia, its universality, and what explains it. We discuss the divide between the evolutionary and sociocultural subfields within anthropology, and address criticisms of evolutionary anthropology. Finally, we talk about the relationship between human behavioral ecology and evolutionary

Dr. Gareth Leng was one of the founders in 1983 of the British Society for Neuroendocrinology. He was appointed as the Chair of Experimental Physiology at the University of Edinburgh in 1994, after 17 years at what is now the Babraham Institute, Cambridge. He is a former Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Neuroendocrinology, and a former President of the International Neuroendocrine Federation. He is the author of The Matter of Facts: Skepticism, Persuasion, and Evidence in Science.

In this episode, we focus on The Matter of Facts. We talk about what evidence is; structure and norms in science; the “scientific method”; Thomas Kuhn, scientific revolutions, and paradigms. We discuss issues with scientific publication and citation. We discuss if science is value-free, if it is done by individual geniuses, and if we can communicate science through narratives. Finally, we address a question from a patron of the show, regarding why people tend to rely more on authority than evidence, and what we can do about it.

Dr. Rebecca Sear is a demographer and anthropologist at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), teaching demography and researching human reproductive behavior from an

evolutionary perspective. She is particularly interested in taking a comparative perspective to understanding human reproductive behavior, and exploring why such behavior varies between, as well as within,
    populations.

In this episode, we start by talking about the study of human demography, and what we can learn from it. We discuss the myth of the nuclear family as the traditional family structure, child rearing in

traditional societies, if children really need a parent from each sex at home, if father absence leads to poverty, and the negative effects of this myth on children and parents. We talk about how gendered division of labor develops in human societies. We discuss life history theory, and issues in how it has been applied to humans. We talk about the strengths of the evolutionary social sciences, and criticisms of the evolutionary social sciences, with a focus on evolutionary psychology. We discuss the ties between the study of human demography and the eugenics movement, and the recent academic resurgence of eugenics. Finally, we discuss issues with the national IQ datasets created by Richard Lynn, and ideas surrounding sex differences and representativeness in academia.

Dr. Christopher Ferrie is an Associate Professor at the University of Technology Sydney and Centre for Quantum Software and Information. His research interests include quantum estimation and control, and, in particular, the use of machine learning to solve statistical problems in quantum information science. He is the author of several books, the latest one being Quantum Bullsh*t: How to Ruin Your Life with Advice from Quantum Physics.

In this episode, we focus on Quantum Bullsh*t. We discuss what “quantum” means, how people misunderstand it, and how pseudoscientists and charlatans distort quantum physics. We go through several concepts and phenomena in quantum physics, including energy, quantum leap, waves and particles, Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle, superposition, and quantum entanglement. We discuss if quantum physics applies to human psychology, and if it can guide our lives. We also talk about time traveling, the multiverse, and quantum computers. Finally, we discuss if it is wise to tell people that they should be “doing their own research”, if we should “believe” in science, and if trying to debunk absurd claims is a waste of time.
