Dr. John Barry is a Chartered Psychologist and Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society (BPS), Honorary Lecturer in Psychology at University College London, and clinical hypnotherapist. He is also co-author (with Louise Liddon) of the new book Perspectives in Male Psychology: An Introduction.
This is the first of a two-part talk where we focus on Perspectives in Male Psychology. In this episode, we talk about male psychology and mental health. We start by talking about the clinical goals of studying male psychology and sex differences, and the biases that usually contaminate research in this area. We discuss some issues with guidelines for practice with boys and men. We talk about how we go about integrating different perspectives on male psychology (evolutionary, biological, social, humanistic). We ask to what extent being masculine is important for male well-being. We get into some of the issues that affect men more than women, like substance abuse, suicide, homelessness, and singlehood, and how father absence affects development. We discuss how clinical practice tends to be feminized, and how it could suit men more. Finally, we talk about alpha, beta, and gamma biases in research on male psychology, and problems with clinical research not informed by sex differences.

We also discuss its relationship with the Nazi regime, and how Rotwelsch-speaking people were persecuted by the Nazis. Finally, we talk about what can we learn about a specific language by studying the history of its names, and what Rotwelsch can tell us about the development and evolution of other languages.

Dr. David Lewis is Senior Lecturer in Social Psychology at Murdoch University.
In this episode, we talk about personality, friendship, and attractiveness from an evolutionary perspective. We start with personality, and ask how we should understand it from an evolutionary standpoint, and discuss if there is a personality inventory that would make more sense evolutionarily-speaking. We also discuss if personality traits are adaptations. We talk about the condition-dependent model of individual differences. We then get into friendship, and discuss it as an evolved phenomenon, same-sex and opposite-sex friendships, the phenomenon of friends with benefits, and the relationships straight women establish with gay men. Finally, we discuss several aspects of physical attractiveness, including symmetry, waist-to-hip ratio, neotenous facial features, eyes, lumbar curvature, and the effects of wearing high heels. We wrap things up with what we get from studying attractiveness through dating apps.

Dr. Orestis Palermos is Lecturer in the School of English, Communication and Philosophy at Cardiff University. He works at the intersection of philosophy of mind and cognitive science, epistemology, philosophy of science and philosophy of technology. He is interested in the idea of philosophical engineering: the way philosophy can impact the design of emerging technologies and socio-technical systems.
In this episode, we talk about epistemology, philosophy of mind, and philosophy of technology. We distinguish between internalism and externalism in epistemology, and then talk about extended and distributed cognition. We talk about social epistemology, and different kinds of technologies that allow for extended cognition. We ask if students should be allowed to use Google in their exams. We discuss how we should think about culture in terms of epistemology. We discuss how science works. Finally, we talk about philosophical engineering.

Dr. Paul Bloom is Professor Emeritus at Yale University and Professor of Psychology at the University of Toronto. His new book is The Sweet Spot: The Pleasures of Suffering and the Search for Meaning.
In this episode, we focus on The Sweet Spot. We start with a few definitions (pleasure, suffering, happiness, and meaning). We then get into topics like: the difference between chosen and unchosen suffering; the relationship between happiness and meaning; motivational pluralism; the difference between suffering for pleasure, and suffering for meaning; the role context plays in how we valuate our experiences; the complicated interplay between pain and pleasure; masochism, self-harm, and BDSM; the state of flow; boredom; the role of imagination; how we derive pleasure from moral punishment; what people find meaningful; narratives and meaning; why are so many people suffering in industrialized societies; the Nozick experience machine, and if it is possible for people to do without suffering; and where we can find the “sweet spot”.

Dr. Charles Foster is a Fellow of Green Templeton College, a member of the Oxford Law Faculty (where he is a Visiting Professor), a Senior Research Associate at the Uehiro Institute for Practical Ethics (within the Faculty of Philosophy), and a Research Associate at the Ethox Centre and the Helex Centre (both within the Faculty of Medicine). His main areas of interest are medical law and ethics. Recently he has been focused particularly on questions of identity, personhood, and authenticity, on whether theories of human dignity can do any real work in the law, and on the use of intuitions in moral and legal reasoning. He is the author of many books, including his most recent one, Being a Human: Adventures in Forty Thousand Years of Consciousness.
In this episode, we focus on Being a Human. We talk about how human sociality changed from the Upper Paleolithic to the Neolithic, and how human conscious experience evolved. We also touch on how the Enlightenment changed people’s perception of the world.

Dr. Itai Yanai is Founding Director of the Institute for Computational Medicine at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine. He is also a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Pharmacology at NYU. He does research on cancer, computational biology, developmental genetics, genomics, microbiome, systems biology, single-cell transcriptomics, gene expression atlas construction, genome evolution. He is the author of The Society of Genes.
In this episode, we focus on The Society of Genes. We first talk about the metaphor of the “selfish gene”. We ask if mutations really occur randomly. We get into the idea of “the society of genes”, and discuss how genes cooperate and compete with one another. We discuss pleiotropy and polygenic traits, and what they tell us about how genes work. We talk about the evolution of sex, and what we can learn about genetics by studying cancer. We discuss human genetic diversity, and how to deal with genetic ancestry in medicine. Finally, we talk about epigenetics, gene editing, and some unanswered questions in genetics.

Dr. Ralph Hertwig is Director of the Center for Adaptive Rationality at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin, Germany. His research interests include models of bounded and ecological rationality; decisions from experience; the psychology of risk; lifespan development of decision making; and evidence-based public policy. He is the editor of Deliberate Ignorance: Choosing Not to Know.
In this episode, we focus on Deliberate Ignorance. We define bounded rationality, ecological rationality, and deliberate ignorance. We talk about the cognitive bases of deliberate rationality, and its relationship with biases and heuristics. We discuss how deliberate ignorance can occur in institutions. We talk about a possible evolutionary rationale for deliberate ignorance, what we know about its development in children, and also the cross-cultural evidence for it. We also discuss individual differences in deliberate ignorance, and the correlation with scores on the Big Five’s openness to experience. We discuss how deliberate ignorance manifests itself in science. Finally, we talk about when and why we should fight against deliberate ignorance.

In this episode, we focus on The Failures of Philosophy. We first discuss what Dr. Gaukroger means by failures in Philosophy in his book. We ask what philosophy is, and what we can learn about it by studying how it failed. We get into some of the history of philosophy, from Plato to the natural philosophers. Finally, we discuss the current status of philosophy, how it relates to science, and its possible future.
