Dr. Christopher Kuzawa is Professor of Anthropology and Faculty Fellow at the Institute for Policy Research at Northwestern University. He uses principles from anthropology and evolutionary biology to gain insights into the biological and health impacts of human developmental plasticity. His primary field research is conducted in Cebu, the Philippines, where he works with a large birth cohort study that enrolled more than 3,000 pregnant women in 1983 and has since followed their offspring into adulthood (now 30 years old). He uses the nearly 3 decades of data available for each study participant, and recruitment of generation 3 (the grandoffspring of the original mothers), to gain a better understanding of the long-term and intergenerational impacts of early life environments on adult biology, life history, reproduction, and health.

In this episode, we talk about developmental plasticity and epigenetics. The topics covered include: early life environments and their health impacts; brain evolution and life history; longitudinal health studies done in the Philippines; human epigenetics; and the extended evolutionary synthesis.

Dr. James Pennebaker is the Regents Centennial Professor of Liberal Arts and Professor of Psychology. He and his students are exploring natural language use, group dynamics, and personality in both laboratory and real-world settings. His earlier work on expressive writing found that physical health and work performance can improve by simple writing and/or talking exercises. His cross-disciplinary research is related to linguistics, clinical and cognitive psychology, communications, medicine, and computer science. Author or editor of 12 books and over 300 articles, Pennebaker has received numerous research and teaching awards and honors.

In this episode, we talk about what we can learn about human psychology through written language. We first discuss the functions of language, and how it influences cognition. We get into written language, and the psychological benefits of writing, particularly expressive writing. We also talk about predicting relationship breakdowns through language use, personality traits, stories, and sex differences in language use.

Dr. Glenn Geher is Professor of Psychology at the State University of New York at New Paltz where he has been awarded SUNY Chancellor Awards for Excellence for both Teaching and Research. His most recent book is Positive Evolutionary Psychology: Darwin's Guide to Living a Richer Life.

In this episode, we talk about a recent paper - Politics and Academic Values in Higher Education: Just How Much Does Political Orientation Drive the Values of the Ivory Tower?  We first talk about academic values, particularly academic rigor, academic freedom, student emotional well-being, social justice, and the advancement of knowledge. We then get into the story behind the publication of the paper, Jonathan Haidt’s talk at New Paltz, what led to the study it, how the study was designed, among other aspects of the process. We discuss the conclusions of the paper, and we end by talking about how academia should deal with these academic values and the biases that arise from personality, political orientation, gender, and field of expertise.

Dr. Michael Huemer is a professor of philosophy at the University of Colorado. He is the author of more than seventy academic articles in epistemology, ethics, metaethics, metaphysics, and political philosophy, as well as several books, like Skepticism and the Veil of Perception, Ethical Intuitionism, The Problem of Political Authority, Approaching Infinity, Paradox Lost, and Dialogues on Ethical Vegetarianism.

In this episode, we talk about ethics and veganism. We start by discussing objectivity in ethics, and how we can objectively determine right and wrong. We get into ethical intuitionism, and discuss where our ethical intuitions come from, including their evolutionary bases. We talk about objections to moral nihilism and moral relativism. We talk about the relationship between science and ethics. We then discuss several different questions in animal ethics, including what makes an animal worthy of moral consideration; animal rights, and legislation concerning animal wellbeing; the extinction of the animals from the meat industry; anti-natalism; how we should deal with carnivore species; cannibalism; and if it would be possible for all of us to become vegan.

Dr. Alexander Rosenberg is the R. Taylor Cole Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at Duke University. He has held fellowships from the National Science Foundation, the American Council of Learned Societies, and the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation. In 1993, Dr. Rosenberg received the Lakatos Award in the philosophy of science. In 2006-2007 he held a fellowship at the National Humanities Center. He’s the author of both fictional and non-fictional literature, including The Atheist’s Guide to Reality, and How History Gets Things Wrong.

In this episode, we talk about scientism. We start by defining scientism, and its relationship to science. We go through many different questions like “What is reality?”, the evolution of human psychology, purpose and meaning, belief, consciousness, free will, God, the nature of morality, and moral progress. We talk about nihilism, and its relationship with scientism. Finally, we discuss how scientism could apply to the social sciences, how to deal with the humanities, and atheism.

Dr. Robert Paarlberg is Betty Freyhof Johnson ’44 Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Wellesley College, and an Associate in the Sustainability Science Program at Harvard University. His research focuses on the international agricultural and environmental policy, regulation of modern technology, including biotechnology. He is the author of many books, including Resetting the Table: Straight Talk About the Food We Grow and Eat.

In this episode, we focus on Resetting the Table. We start by framing food consumption as political behavior. We get into some of the most prominent kinds of farming technologies, including organic farming, GMO (genetically modified organism) crops, and indoor farming, and discuss a bit their advantages, disadvantages, and applications. We talk about consuming local. We discuss the connection between food production and the environment. We also discuss the how viable would it be for everyone to become vegan, and if it would be a good solution. Finally, we talk about the main ways we should reset our tables (in the West), and what can be done politically and by individual citizens.

Dr. Kyle Thomas recently received his Ph.D. in experimental psychology from Harvard University, where he developed his research program on the psychology of common knowledge under his advisor, Steven Pinker. He is currently the Chief Scientist at MotiveMetrics, where they turn cutting-edge psychological science into software tools that can accurately reveal true motivations from publicly available data. In short, they help marketers understand why people buy—or don’t—at the click of a button. Software hasn’t eaten marketing research yet, but they’re working very hard to change that.

In this episode, we talk about common knowledge. We start with some basic definitions of private knowledge, shared knowledge, and common knowledge. We then get into some examples of domains where common knowledge applies, like economic games, self-conscious emotions, charitable behavior, the bystander effect, and indirect speech.

In this episode, we focus on A Most Interesting Problem, and Darwin’s Descend of Man. We first discuss the Descent of Man in its historical context, and compare it to the Origin of Species, and try to trace back the origins of some of its most prominent ideas. We talk about part 1 of the book, and the evolutionary origins of our mental faculties, and what Darwin had to say about race and sex differences. We get into Darwin’s insights on our African origins, and some of the most important ideas in the field of paleoanthropology. We explain why “race” is not a useful scientific concept, and why “cline” is a much better one to understand human biodiversity. We also talk about how revolutionary the idea of sexual selection was. Finally, we discuss why some of Darwin’s ideas were/are problematic, with a focus on a recent controversy involving Agustín Fuentes’ essay on Science, and we sum things up with what Darwin got right and wrong about human evolution.

Dr. Rebecca Owens is Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Sunderland. She is also a Chartered member of the British Psychological Society and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Her interests include mating behaviors, preferences, and strategies; male psychology; and body image/identity and wellbeing.

In this episode, we talk about sex differences in mating behavior, male psychology, and the psychology of body modifications. We first discuss sex differences in mating strategies and mate preferences, for both short-term and long-term relationships. We then get into male psychology, and discuss the effects of testosterone and how it varies in romantic relationships. We discuss aggression, and the misconceptions people hold about aggressive males, and issues regarding domestic violence. We also talk about sex differences in competition. We ask about the psychological impact of gender roles, and if the concept of “toxic masculinity” is useful in any way. Finally, we talk about the psychology of body modifications, and their impact on mental wellbeing.
