Dr. James Costa is Executive Director of the Highlands Biological Station and Professor of Evolutionary Biology at Western Carolina University. He has authored 7 books, including Darwin's Backyard: How Small Experiments Led to a Big Theory (W. W. Norton, 2017) — a finalist for the American Association for the Advancement of Science/Subaru Prize — and the co-edited volume An Alfred Russel Wallace Companion (Chicago, 2019).

In this episode, we talk about Darwin, Wallace, On the Origin of Species, and The Descent of Man. We first talk about On the Origin of Species, where Darwin’s ideas came from, and in what ways they differ from Wallace’s. We then get into The Descent of Man, and go through some of the most important topics covered there, including sexual selection, our primate origins, the evolutionary origins of our mental faculties, race and sex differences, cultural evolution, and (cultural) group selection. We also talk about how Darwin was a precursor of evolutionary psychology. We discuss the eusocial insects, and if their behavior is best understood as the result of inclusive fitness/kin selection or group selection. Finally, we give a summary of some of the most important things Darwin got right and wrong.

Dr. Nichola Raihani is Professor of Evolution and Behavior at University College London. Her research considers the evolution of cooperation in nature. She was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology in 2019. Her first book is The Social Instinct: How Cooperation Shaped the World.

In this episode, we focus on The Social Instinct. We first discuss the structure of the book, and why the focus is on cooperation. We talk about the mechanisms used to explain the evolution of cooperation – kin selection, reciprocal altruism, and group selection. We then get into what a family is from a evolutionary perspective, and discuss the role of mothers and fathers, and cooperative breeding. We question the model of the nuclear family, and also talk about grandmothers. We ask why men live so long. We discuss why people help unrelated others, and why we are so uncharitable to those doing good deeds. We ask if we are ultimately selfish. Other topics include: interdependence; why we care so much about what other people think of us; social comparison; and the ability to join together and rebel against tyrannical leaders. We wrap up with discussing how we can promote large-scale cooperation.

Sacha Altay is doing his PhD in cognitive science at the Institut Jean Nicod of the École Normale Supérieure in Paris. Fascinated by apparently irrational beliefs and behaviors, he works with Hugo Mercier on the role of epistemic reputation in communication and the cognitive mechanisms underlying information transmission and evaluation.

In this episode, we talk about fake news, and scientific misinformation. We start with fake news, and discuss how widespread it really is, and the sort of cultural and social factors behind fake news sharing. We talk about misinformation on misinformation, and moral panics about fake news. We also talk about scientific misinformation during the COVID pandemic, and how governments and health authorities could have done a better job of communicating COVID-related information. We finish with a discussion of what would make for more effective science communication.

Dr. Charles Murray holds the F. A. Hayek Emeritus Chair in Cultural Studies at the American Enterprise Institute. In 1994, “The Bell Curve” (Free Press), a New York Times bestseller he coauthored with the late Richard J. Herrnstein, sparked heated controversy for its analysis of the role of IQ in shaping America’s class structure. In 2012, in another the New York Times bestseller, “Coming Apart: The State of White America, 1960–2010” (Crown Forum), Dr. Murray described the nature and causes of the cultural polarization that, by 2016, would shape national politics. In his latest book, “Human Diversity: The Biology of Gender, Race, and Class” (Twelve Books, January 2020), he describes recent developments in genetics and neuroscience that are transforming the social sciences.

In this episode, we focus on Human Diversity, and talk about the biology of gender, race, and class. We start with gender, and go through some of the most significant psychological sex differences. We then get into race, and discuss its scientific validity, and some of the most controversial race differences. We also talk about the heritability of class, and the traits associated with success, like intelligence and conscientiousness. Finally, we discuss what could be some of the political implications of these differences.

Dr. Benjamin M. Friedman is the William Joseph Maier Professor of Political Economy, and formerly Chairman of the Department of Economics, at Harvard University. He joined the Harvard faculty in 1972. Dr Friedman’s newest book is Religion and the Rise of Capitalism – a fundamental reassessment of the foundations of current-day economics, showing how religious thinking has shaped economic thinking ever since the beginnings of modern Western economics and how this influence continues to be relevant today especially in the United States.

In this episode, we focus on Religion and the Rise of Capitalism. We get first into a bit of the early history of economics. We focus a lot on David Hume and Adam Smith, and also in how economic thinking changed after them. We talk about some of the most influential schools of thinking in economics during the 19th and 20th centuries. We discuss the political influence of the evangelical protestants in the US. We also talk about the relationship between capitalism and political ideology, like liberalism and conservatism. Finally, we discuss if there is any contradiction between the promotion of cooperation by religion, and the competitive nature of capitalism, and if we would have ever have modern Western economic thinking without Protestantism.

Dr. Sander van der Linden is Professor of Social Psychology in the Department of Psychology at the University of Cambridge and Director of the Cambridge Social Decision-Making Lab. His research interests center around the psychology of human judgment, communication, and decision-making, including social norms and networks, attitudes and polarization, reasoning about evidence, and the public understanding of risk and uncertainty.

In this episode, we talk about social media, fake news, and science communication and denial. We first get into several aspects of social media interactions, like how they change how people communicate; in what ways they resemble real-life interactions; the phenomenon of eco chambers, and political polarization; and fake news and misinformation. We talk specifically about the motivations behind the sharing of fake news. We then discuss the best ways of doing evidence and science communication, and also the idea of inoculating people against misinformation. We go into science denial and the politicization of facts, and how to deal with these phenomena. We dive into misinformation in the context of the covid-19 pandemic, and what governments and health authorities could have done better in communicating about it. Finally, we ask if social media represent a net positive or a net negative in people’s lives.

Dr. Cécile Sarabian is a Postdoctoral researcher in Cognitive Ecology at Kyoto University. She investigates parasite avoidance behaviors and their effectiveness in non-human primates and other animals via field and lab experimentation/observations. She is generally interested in the origins of hygiene and disgust in humans and in the potential applications of disgust into the field of Conservation.

In this episode, we talk about disgust and conservation. We start by discussing disgust from an evolutionary perspective. We talk about different disgust-related behaviors, and hygiene. We mention briefly how an evolutionary perspective can inform how people deal with the covid-19 pandemic, and how they react to pathogens in this context. We delve into the discussion surrounding the different domains of disgust (pathogen disgust, sexual disgust, and moral disgust). We also do a bit of comparative psychology, and explore to what extent we can compare non-human primates to us. We also talk about sex differences in disgust, and human universals in disgust reactions. Finally, we talk about new avenues to explore when it comes to the role disgust might play in animal conservation.

Dr. Christian Pieter Hoffmann is Professor of Communication Management and Political Communication at the Institute of Communication and Media Studies at the University of Leipzig, Germany. In addition, he is responsible for teaching in the field of political communication in cooperation with the Institute for Political Science. His research interests include strategic communication management, financial communication and political communication – with a particular focus on the challenges and opportunities provided by new media.

In this episode, we talk about social media, political communication, fake news and misinformation, and political polarization. We start with the benefits and challenges of social media. We talk specifically about Facebook escapism. We distinguish between fake news, political disinformation, and political misinformation, and discuss if they really are widespread phenomena. We also address political polarization, and what might be its causes. We ask if the way people engage with politics online differs from how they do it in their offline lives.

Dr. Scott A. Small is the Director of the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center at Columbia University, where he is the Boris and Rose Katz Professor of Neurology. He is appointed in the Departments of Neurology, Radiology, and Psychiatry. With an expertise in Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive aging, Dr. Small’s research focuses on the hippocampus, a circuit in the brain targeted by these and other disorders, notably schizophrenia. He has pioneered the development and application of high-resolution functional MRI techniques that can pinpoint parts of the hippocampus most affected by aging and disease. He is the author of Forgetting: The Benefits of Not Remembering.

In this episode, we focus on Forgetting. We first talk about some of the basics of how memory works. We then talk about forgetting, bot its benefits, and conditions where it gets pathological, like Alzheimer’s. We also talk about PTDS and autism. Finally, we discuss if people should want to have better memories, and if it is possible to improve memory.
