  • Dreaming a New Future through Conscious Evolution

The upheaval in the world today is evidence that the cultural myth that we in the western world are living under is undergoing a radical evolution. Our old myths are dying. What will be our new myth and will humanity survive the chaotic transformation? Christine shares the stories of two scientists who used astral travel to explore the nature of reality in a systematic way and developed an institute called the Monroe Institute to research the phenomenon of out of body experiences.

The results of this research suggest that we each contribute to the evolution of consciousness through our own personal growth. Dreams and meditation enhance this process by reflecting back to us our own particular fears.

We take a call from Lucille from Cambria who shares with us her experience of the nine dimensions meditation which leads us to a discussion of somatics or body awareness in personal evolution.  We end with Christine talking about the power of rebirthing breathwork as a healing modality.

Christine mentions the books: Memories, Dreams and Reflections by Carl Jung, Quantum Questions by Ken Wilbur, The Answer to Job by Carl Jung and The Miracle of the Breath by Andy Caponigro. Lucille references the book Alchemy of Nine Dimensions by Barbara Hand Clow.

BIO: Christine Barrington is a Transformational Coach and supports individuals and groups to artfully engage their inner world through exploring dreams, art, and inner visioning in order to effect potent positive change in their lives. She is highly trained in depth psychology and trauma resolution techniques and uses somatic experiencing as a basis for deep listening into the non-rational sources of wisdom that reside in the embodied subconscious. Join us and hear how she combines these multiple modalities in the service of unlocking our dreams.

  • Dreams and Shamanism with Katrina Appleby

Communing in her dreams with animal spirit guides and contacting gods and goddesses is part of Kat’s shamanic dreamwork practice. She begins by describing her childhood nightmares about snakes and how Snake eventually became a powerful spirit guide for her.

Kat tells about how her “dark night of the soul” opened her up to reexamine her contract with God. She describes how surrendering can lead to new growth by sharing the Welsh myth of Ceridwen. Kat also reads a story that she created about snakes called, “We Once Were Dragons.”

We end with a question from Rick about how to identify gods and goddesses in our dreams. Kat suggests it has to do with the “twinkle in the eye” and that the god might show up even as a homeless person.

BIO: Katrina Appleby is a Certified Professional Dreamworker and a Mentor for the Institute of Dream Studies. Since the age of four Kat has been aware of the importance and power of dreams and dreamt often about snakes. She finds that it is indeed quite normal to meet Gods, Goddesses and power animals in her dreams. Kat joins us today from the UK. She is passionate about working with people and their dreams, especially with those that feel that they have a bigger purpose and calling and are looking to their dreams to find out which direction to take.

  • Ethical Dream Sharing with Rev. Geoff Nelson

We focus on how to support each other respectfully as we explore our dreams without unduly influencing or belittling each other. Geoff starts out by sharing some incidents that sparked his interest in ethics. He then shares some of the principles of the Clearness Committee which was written in the 1660s as a guideline for the Quaker community to support spiritual seekers in their midst. One principle is that the supporters are encouraged to ask probing questions rather then directive questions.  Geoff and I are both members of the Ethics Committee at the IASD (International Association for the Study of Dreams), and we speak about the IASD Ethic Statement written in the late 1990s. You can read the ethics statement at www.ASdreams.org/ethics-and-confidentiality/

Rev. Nelson then speaks about using dreams as part of other spiritual practices including labyrinth walking and personal prayer. He shares that dreamwork has been the most powerful spiritual practice that he has experienced and speaks about some of his personal practices around dreams and spirituality.

We speak with two callers. First Chris from Felton shares some dreams she has been having about being a recent empty nester. We also take a call from Ahleen from Santa Cruz who laments that most of her dreams are about everyday problems, and she wishes she could have more comforting or uplifting dreams.

BIO. Rev. Geoff Nelson, D. Min., is a retired Presbyterian pastor, from Whittier, California. He is also a trained spiritual director, labyrinth facilitator and received his D. Min. degree for running dream groups in churches which his book, “Dreaming in Church” describes. Rev. Nelson is part of the IASD (International Association for the Study of Dreams) serving on the ethics committee and the conference planning committee. He has been involved in hosting several regional southern California dream conferences with IASD. Geoff is excited about the upcoming ISD conference in Tucson next summer, which will be the first live conference in three years.

Geoff can be reached at ggnelson(at)ix.netcom.com.

We play clips from two different versions of the guest-selected song John O’Dreams.

  • The Benefits of Day Dreaming with Doris Snyder

We speak with Doris Snyder about daydreaming which is what thoughts and images float through our minds when we are otherwise occupied with simple tasks so our mind is free to wander. Doris quotes studies that suggest that we daydream as much at 40% of the time that we are awake and that this is a time that is rich in creativity and can reveal insights about our concerns much as dreaming does.

Doris suggests that we keep a daydreaming journal just like we would keep a night dreaming journal to keep track of what thoughts are bubbling up during our moments of down time. She also suggests that we set up times when we can devote our attention to daydreaming such as going for a walk or taking a bath.

Doris also talks about some ways to incubate daydreams. She lists a number of possible topics on which we could daydream including “what if I won the lottery” or “what would the perfect vacation look like.”

We then take two calls. The first is from previous Dream Journal guest Katie Mason who talks about how she works with her clients day dreams the same way that she works with their nighttime dreams knowing that they come from the same intuitive emotional place. We also take a call from Gilda who shares that she uses daydreams as a way to create poetry. She encourages us to accept the daydreams and not try to judge or analyze them.

BIO: Doris Snyder is a professional dream coach and author of Numbers in Dreams. Her holistic and creative approach to dreams has led clients and conference attendees to greater understanding of their dreams. She is a member of the IASD, the International Association for the Study of Dreams and is a workshop presenter at their annual conferences. Her new book is called, “Daydreaming: The Beauty and Power of a Wandering Mind.”

  • The Ethics of Dream Sharing with Carol Warner

Carol starts by describing that she got interested in her dreams while sleeping for several months by her grandmother who was making her transition. She describes her introduction to the study of dreams with her mentor Robert van de Castle and his book, Our Dreaming Mind.

She then describes her role in creating the ethics statement for the International Association for the Study of Dreams (IASD) and tells about some of the early breeches in ethics that occurred in the early days of the IASD conferences. She reads from the statement itself which emphasizes that only the dreamer is the final authority on their dreams.

In the final segment, Carol talks about the reissuing of her book At the Feet of the Master which is the result of channeling words from John the Beloved about his relationship with Jesus Christ. We talk about the idea that “In dreams, we enter God’s world. Through dreams, he enters ours.”

  • How to Support Others with Their Dreams with Dr. Leslie Ellis

Dr. Leslie Ellis teaches therapists to learn how to explore dreams with their clients. Natural empathy and curiosity can be used by anyone wanting to support a client or a friend with a dream they are curious about. We talked in depth with Leslie on Aug 8, 2020 about nightmares, so we skip the background talk and go right to Leslie’s latest dreams and interests.

We speak about the power of dream shards (aka snippets) and encourage listeners to record even their smallest dreams. We then shift to somatics and the “felt sense” which is the basis for the famous dreamer’s “aha”. We talk about Leslie’s specialty of trauma therapy; what are the hallmarks of PTSD, and how can dreams mark that the condition is waning? We end with a plea for people to get help with their nightmares especially if they are having suicidal thoughts.

BIO: Dr. Leslie Ellis is an author, teacher, speaker and clinical dreamworker. Her recent book, A Clinician’s Guide to Dream Therapy (Routledge, 2019) offers therapists a primer in modern, experiential dreamwork methods.
