A special live Christmas show with long-time Dream Journal listener Lucille Bosco from Cambria. She speaks about her history with astrology and tarot also studying Jung as she worked for her Master’s degree at Pacifica Graduate Institute in 2006. She also addresses how virtual reality has parallels in the dream world. There is a potential for deep dream incubation or practicing for lucid dreams using virtual reality.
Lucille draws a card for the show from her Shaman Deck which turns out to be number 17, the Earth card, and we spend the second segment talking about tarot cards and how she uses them especially during times when she is having few dreams. We get a call from Sylvia from Dryden, Ontario who shares with us the Christmas miracle that she saw a rainbow that morning even in their snowy -20 degree weather. She also shared with us some of her techniques for incubating dreams and choosing tarot cards using sacred objects.

We turn the mic around today and Katherine is interviewed by the host of Narrative Species, music creator and engineer for the show Rick Kleffel. Katherine starts by talking about her history first growing up in a family of six scientists and then as an astrophysicist getting her PhD from UCSC and working at NASA in Mountain View for 11 years. We talk about the evolution of her focus from thoughts to feelings as she moved from science to dreams.
Katherine describes her experience of almost dying in 2005 because she was able to successfully suppress her feelings until her appendix ruptured and how this lead her to go deeper into her dreams. Katherine recommends accessing emotions through bodily sensations rather than using labels and describes the parts of the brain that are active during dreams. She encourages listeners to set up their own dream groups and describes how difficult it can be to distill the chaos of dreams into a concrete dream report.
We take a call from Chris from Felton who was a member of Katherine’s original dream group which started in the 1990s. Chris asks Katherine about her vision for the future. She finishes by talking about the book about dreams that she is working on.
Katherine is going to start up her Monday afternoon group again by mid-January. Contact her if you’d like to join.

The picture shows Dr. Tom Whalen on the left with his beloved Zen teacher on the right.
Katherine speaks with Dr. Whalen about Dreamwork and Zen each of which he has practiced for over thirty years. He speaks about his synthesis of these two disciplines into what he calls Dream Koan practice. We then delve into our guest’s medical pain practice and what results he has seen in using ketamine to ameliorate treatment-resistant depression.
We take two listener calls. The first is from Ellen who speaks out in favor of microdosing psychedelics. The second is from Dr. Whalen’s colleague Rick Issan Elkin, and he speaks about sacred mythology and their collaboration called The Eighth Wave.
BIO: Tom Whalen is an MD practicing pain medicine. For the last 15 years, he’s been following advances in neuroscience, including the use of psychedelics to treat addiction and PTSD. His passion lies in the realms of spiritual practice. After personally experiencing psychedelics in the 60’s, he recognized the short-term benefit that these provided, and sought a more sustaining form of practice. He began to practice Zen in 1971, and eventually found his lineage teacher in 1997. He has been given transmission in the Maezumi-Glassman-Ancheta Roshis lineage, authorized to be a “teacher.” Thirty years ago, he began practicing Archetypal DreamWork with Marc Bregman and Christa Lancaster, with whom he continues to have weekly sessions. With these two practices, he has synthesized a “new” form of Zen practice, which he calls Dream-Koan practice. He currently offers this practice with his buddy and Dharma brother, Rick Issan Elkin, through the Eighth Wave Community at EighthWave.org

We start off by speaking with Katherine about working with cultural symbols vs letting the dreams speak for themselves through embodiment and personal associations. Gerette questions the idea that certain techniques are difficult to do on one’s own and we launch into a discussion of what to look for in a dream teacher including certification and evidence that they are doing their own work.
We also talk about the ethics of dream sharing from the point of view of the teacher or therapist. For one thing one must be aware of the egotistical high that can come from being in a position of authority. Also we speak about the pressure of being in the projections of the people we work with and how important it is for the teacher or therapist to be self-reflective and to have their own support network.
In the context of peer support, we mention the work of the Association for Spiritual Integrity which can be found at Spiritual-Integrity.org
We take a call from Jane who asks how can a practitioner recognize when a client is not the right fit for them?
Katherine’s BIO: Dr. Katherine Lawson has an MA in Counseling Psychotherapy from Pacifica and has her doctorate from Saybrook University in Mind-Body Medicine with a specialty Integrative Mental Health. She recently released a book: Dreamwork for Growth and Healing: A Guided Dream Journal. You can reach Katherine at DreamsHeal.com
Gerette’s BIO: Gerette Buglion is author of An Everyday Cult, a memoir which shows how her innocent quest for meaning left her open to manipulation by a controlling dream teacher. Gerette’s current work is in Cult Recovery and Education. Her signature writing course called, ‘Writing to Reckon’ offers a safe space for cult survivors to share their stories. She is a founding collaborator of the #iGotOut movement, whose mission is to encourage people who have experienced cultic abuse to tell their stories. It’s a dreams extravaganza as Katherine exchanges dreams with Lucille from Cambria in this show. Lucille starts with a dream in which she explores the symbolism of rectangles vs squares concluding that she gives “a little more leeway” than most of the people she knows. She also notes that she changes her clothes in the dream to be wearing her favorite color, purple, and laments that it can be hard to let go and accept the things that happen in life. We reference the poem “When I am an Old Woman I Shall Wear Purple”.
Katherine then shares a dream about taking care of some very colorful lizards owned by my writing teacher. Lucille asks about my association with lizards and it brings up for me the kind of “lizard mind” which reminds me of a kind of primitive instinctive part of myself. This also reminds me of my writing process and Lucille shares a quote from Stephen King in which he says that as a writer that you should “Just keep going”.
Lucille then shares a second dream in which she is debating with others about the environment. The dream brings up ideas about what she can and can’t do in waking life around such big and important issues.
I finish out with a couple more dreams from my journal including one about building a space ship and another about my relationship with my husband, Max.
We play longer than usual clips from the following songs: Every Day is a Winding Road by Sheryl Crow and All around the World by Taj ‘Mo.
