The Future Of episodes

  • News from the future (ENG) - Coasts at risk, The return of the airship, Moon-buggy, Age limits, Very Digital Fingerprints
    In this episode:

(1). Coasts at risk. We bring attention back to the effect of rising seas on the communities that now live along the coasts. New evidence and estimates tell us that much more serious programmatic efforts are needed.

(2). The return of the airship. While the world spends and focuses on projects to go faster, a British company is working on an all-electric blimp that looks like a flying five-star hotel, and of course is proceeding at a placid pace.

(3). Moon-buggy. If you have in mind the human-guided rovers of the Apollo missions of the 1970s, new lunar dune buggies are on their way to support the Artemis mission, promising increased performance.

(4). Age limits. While one strand of research tells us of a future in which age can be extended substantially, a new study sets this limit below 150 years. We understand how the "resilience" of a human body is measured and why it is not infinite.

(5). Very Digital Fingerprints. British police arrest a known drug trafficker from a close-up photo of his hand showing a cheese he has a sweet tooth. Recovering fingerprints from an image is not a new thing, but it is a frontier that is still underestimated, for better or worse.

Intanto l’Europa sta a guardare.

  • News from the future (ENG) - AI recruiting and bias, Surveillance with Ring, 500 years of Captcha, The third thumb, Patent Troll
    In this episode:

    1. AI recruiting and bias. Personnel recruitment and selection travels fast towards the increasingly massive use of tools that claim to be AI-based, but contain very little artificial intelligence and moreover full of bias. With the added aggravation of a daunting lack of transparency.

    2. Surveillance with Ring. Amazon's smart video intercom, would represent the largest surveillance network on the planet, to which law enforcement would have warrantless access in the US. This sparks controversy and legitimate fears, which I'll tell you about.

    3. Five hundred years of Captcha. To fill out the famous tests that prove you are human and not a bot, it takes 32 seconds on average, which for all users in the world is equivalent to a mountain of time. Cloudflare proposes an alternative solution.

    4. The third thumb. A team of scientists teaches a group of volunteers to use a prosthetic thumb and discovers how the brain creates an image of it to integrate it into its functionality and adapt behavior. That's what happens when engineers and neuroscientists get together.

    5. Patent Troll. In the USA finally a first case against an operator that uses its patents to make mass predatory lawsuits and close profitable economic deals to its benefit. Meanwhile, Europe is watching.

Attacco hacker all’oleodotto.

Cinque. Mezzi gratis a Los Angeles.

Pronti all’esplorazione?

  • News from the future (ENG) - internet costs more, Venus hell, level 4 autonomous drones, false reviews, hacking a Tesla
    In this episode:

(1). Internet costs more. Beyond Trump's statements, and Obama's before him, the cost of the internet bill in the US has increased substantially. Now it's Biden's turn, let's see if he's stronger or the cable lobby.

(2). Venus Hell. Scientists have reached a level of technology where they are making silicon carbide-based instruments that could withstand the nearly 500° boiling temperature on Venus. Ready for exploration?

(3). Level 4 autonomous drones. Autonomous drones are also advancing. Let me tell you the story of a Philadelphia startup that has built an aircraft capable of a fully autonomous mission, and why this is a milestone.

(4). False reviews. As is often the case, wrongdoing is discovered by accident, but this time with hundreds of thousands of sellers and users working together to offer their products 5-star reviews on Amazon, we're looking at something really big.

(5). Hacking a Tesla. Since this is a software with wheels, and moreover updated on-air, the American company has been fighting for a long time, very seriously, to protect itself from hackers. But in this story, hackers come from the sky, win hands down, but luckily they had no bad intentions.

  • News dal futuro - tassare i robot, centrale solare galleggiante, basta fusioni, lotta all'Alzheimer, yacht nucleare
    In questa puntata:

(1). Tassare i robot.

(4). Lotta all’Alzheimer.

Genio o follia?
