Two of the world’s leading authorities on bariatric and metabolic surgery, the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric surgery (ASMBS) and the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO), have issued new evidence-based clinical guidelines for the first time in 30 years!

The  2022 ASMBS and IFSO Updated Guidelines on Indications for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery by Dan Eisenberg et al. were published October 22, 2022 online  in the journals Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases (SOARD) and Obesity Surgery.

Dr. Angela (Angie) Golden is a doctorally prepared Family Nurse Practitioner.  She owns practice in Arizona that specializes in the treatment of the chronic disease of obesity in the NP Obesity Treatment Clinic in Flagstaff, Arizona.
She has served as the Chair of the Obesity Medicine Association's  CME Overview Committee and has been instrumental in ensuring that speakers use inclusive language for all healthcare providers. She has also spearheaded using the term “obesity” rather than “weight management”, which is important in recognizing obesity as a disease state.
Dr. Golden has been a leader at AANP and AAPA on the topic of obesity and she is also a founding member of the Arizona Obesity Organization. She is a past-president of AANP. 
Additionally, she has authored a book Treating Obesity in Primary Care published by Springer.

In this episode of What's up Wednesday, obesity medicine specialist Karli Burridge discusses the outcomes of the recently published study: Two-year effects of semaglutide in adults with overweight or obesity: the STEP 5 trial by Timothy Garvey et al., published in Nature Medicine October 10, 2022.

The STEP 5 trial assessed the efficacy and safety of once-weekly subcutaneous semaglutide 2.4 mg versus placebo (behavioral intervention) for long-term treatment of adults with obesity, or preobesity with at least one weight-related comorbidity, without diabetes. The co-primary endpoints were the percentage change in body weight and achievement of weight loss of ≥5% at week 104.

In this episode of What's Up Wednesday, we review the article: Pharmacotherapies for Post-Bariatric Weight Regain: Real World Comparative Outcomes by Gazda et al. published in Obesity (Silver Spring) May 2021.

This was retrospective analysis of 207 individuals at one center treated for post-bariatric surgery weight regain between 2014 to 2019 (Of note: this was prior to the availability of semaglutide 2.4 mg or tirzepatide). They compared the percent body weight loss between patients receiving either ILM (intensive lifestyle modification) alone, to those receiving  non-GLP-1 pharmacotherapy plus ILM,  to those receiving a GLP-1 agonist plus ILM.

 Episode 3: How to Initiate the Discussion of Obesity with Patients: Sandra Christensen

In this episode of the Gaining Health Podcast, Karli Burridge speaks with her mentor, friend, and colleague, Sandra (Sam) Christensen about the importance of mentorship, obesity and women’s health, how to initiate the discussion of obesity with patients, and Sandra’s own personal battle with cancer that led her to the field of obesity medicine. 

Sam is Family Nurse Practitioner, who has been specializing in obesity medicine since 2005, and who won the  Clinician of the Year award from the Obesity Medicine Association shortly after this interview was recorded (CONGRATS, Sam!!).

 In 2009, Sam founded Integrative Medical Weight Management in Seattle, Washington with the goal of providing comprehensive evidence-based treatment in a healing, inspiring setting. She has been an active member of the Obesity Medicine Association (OMA) since 2005 and currently serve as a Trustee on the OMA Board of Trustees. She was named a fellow of OMA (FOMA) in 2016 for her dedication and commitment to the clinical treatment of obesity and obesity-related diseases, has won numerous awards for her work in obesity medicine, and published a book in 2021 titled A Clinician’s Guide to Discussing Obesity with Patients.

 Dr. Fitch is the Associate Director of the Massachusetts General Hospital Weight Center and faculty at Harvard Medical School. She is board certified in internal medicine, pediatrics, and obesity medicine, and is the President of the Obesity Medicine Association.
 
 In this episode, Karli and Angela talk  about obesity medicine, the awkward moment when you're at a party and  someone asks you what you do professionally (I swear, I don't normally eat like this!), and what excites Angela about the future of this exciting medical field.

In this What's Up Wednesday episode, obesity medicine specialist Karli Burridge discusses a study published in the Obesity Journal, April 2021, titled Symptomatic Hypoglycemia After Gastric Bypass: Incidence and Predictive Factors in a Cohort of 1,138 Consecutive Patients, and discusses how clinicians can use the information from this study when managing patients with a history of Roux-en-y Gastric Bypass surgery.
