Walking the Fairways takes a trip to the tropical north of Australia as we visit the Top End of Northern Territory with our, now officially titled Northern Territory correspondent, Jimmy Downes, Superintendent of Humpty Doo Golf Club.

Jimmy gives us a full update of works that he and his team have been completing recently on course since we last spoke with him, as the course prepares for their first Golf Australia event in 15 years! Jimmy also gives us a full wrap up of what's going on around other NT courses including Darwin GC, The Gardens, Katherine, and Jabiru. It's been a rather tough wet season to say the least!

The biggest news coming out these past couple of weeks has been Peninsula Kingswood Country Golf Club being announced as host of the 2027 men's Australian Open. I give you a full run down of what we know and what we're still yet to learn about this magnificent golf facility. There's also more news coming from Tasmania GC and Fairbairn GC in ACT is looking for help to keep their golf course land being taken away. I also took some time to visit the very impressive Lang Lang GC located outside Melbourne city, which really surprised me!

From humble beginnings in Melbourne after finishing school, Michael Henderson found a desire in wanting to understand golf course architecture much more. He read all he could find and put himself on a path to earning an opportunity to work in this rather niche industry.

From submitting design work to a golf course architecture competition, to working at Royal Melbourne Golf Club, Michael wanted in on the golf architecture world and nothing was going to stop him. He gained a couple of different opportunities over time working with a couple of well known firms, including shaping on site helping to build the well known and now famous Tara Iti in New Zealand.

Fast forward to today and Michael is now a member of the Society of Australian Golf Course architects having completed his own work to redesign an amazing transformation of Mallacoota Golf Club after the devastating 2019 bushfires, along with recent work at Flinders Golf Club on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula.

Come along for the ride as we launch into Michael's background and career, along with some fun and interesting discussions around courses other than 18 holes.

Hayden Mead is the Superintendent of one of Australia's greatest golf courses, Kingston Heath Golf Club.

I made the journey to Kingston Heath to sit down with Hayden in the clubhouse and record our conversation. We discuss his career at length, from starting his greenkeeping career after finishing school and working his way up the ladder to Superintendent.

I'm not going to give anything away with this one other than to say, this is a long journey of only two courses, and you know it ends up at Kingston Heath. We discuss a whole lot including greenkeeping, personal growth, people management, history, vegetation, and tournament hosting, along with the immediate future of Kingston Heath being this year's host of the men's Australian Open and 2028 Presidents Cup!

This time around I've been the one doing some course walks including a visit to Peninsula Kingswood, The National Golf Club's new Long Island golf course, and also played a round at Sydney's newly opened Newgreens Chatswood! On top of this there's some incredible work being done at The Hills Golf Club in New Zealand by OCM, along with a wave of local support for the former Pegasus Golf & Sports Club just north of Christchurch.

A first time appearance for Superintendent Ben Lucas from Club Tocumwal on The Golfing Greenkeeper as he provides us with a insight into the club's significant recent course improvements. There's also the minor (I mean major) fact that Club Tocumwal recently opened their brand new clubhouse to service the membership and local community. A bright future ahead for Club Tocumwal and it's great to see significant investment like this from the golf club.

There's also a whole heap of other news including the final state graduate of the year award winner announced and more course improvements at golf clubs such as Noosa Golf Club, Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Resort, Eastlake GC, Rosanna GC, The Dunes Golf Links, and a new superintendent is set to join Country Club Tasmania in Launceston.

Callum Hitching is the current superintendent of Karratha Golf Club located about 1500km north of Perth in WA and is a very unique and isolated regional centre of Australia. The golf course at Karratha is a local public community asset that not so long ago was upgraded from sand putting greens to grass greens which Callum was heavily involved with. The course also went through a redesign at the same time.

Prior to his current position, Callum leaned his trade at Busselton Golf Club. After completing his time at Busselton, Callum was soon taking the controls leading the team at Busselton as superintendent where he was able to improve the course over a number of years. After a short stint away from the industry and back again, plans were being setup to redesign Karratha GC and Callum's name was being put forward as the man to take Karratha to the next level.

Scott Champion might not quite be a household name just yet, but I'm certain you have heard of some of the work he has been involved with.

An early part of Scott's golf course architecture career involved a start at Greg Norman Golf Course Design working with a couple of architects such as Bob Harrison and Harley Kruse. Fast forward a few years and Bob Harrison decided to start his own design firm and he asked Scott to join him in the business. Yes, Scott has been part of Harrison Golf since it's inception!

Scott tells us about his early years getting into the industry after which we get stuck into one of Harrison Golf's more famous designs - Ardfin in Scotland. There's a great story here before we stop next to focus on a current Harrison Golf project in detail, being the redesign of the well known Newcastle Golf Club to the north of Sydney.

Have you ever wondered what it takes to deliver a golf course for a tournament? Ever wondered about how everything gets done to present a golf course for a national televised tournament like the men's Australian Open but you don't see anyone working on the golf course? Well, if you've ever had a fleeting thought about what goes on behind the scenes of a golf course to prepare it for a tournament at the highest level, then this two part podcast series is for you!

Part 2 brings you the final 2 days of course preparation for the men's Australian Open at Royal Melbourne. Mother Nature swings a full 180 from day 1, with showers and cold weather coming in. This significantly changes the earlier reserved directives from tournament officials and the shackles come off the greenkeeping staff. All the tricks are pulled out to bring as much life to the greens of the famed Composite Course and you'll hear the lengths the team goes to in an effort to get the most out of the greens.

Part 2 also brings to life the personal element of tournament preparation with a few short interviews throughout the weekend sharing just what is involved in some of the detail of tournament prep through the eyes of the staff, and what it means to work at such an iconic golf course, during an iconic tournament, within a wonderful team!

Part 1 takes you through day 1 and day 2 of the tournament preparation including the challenging weather conditions that forced the tournament officials to direct the course preparation to do something that's never been done before.
