When Brooke McAlary's latest book, CARE: The Radical Art of Taking Time - landed at my local post office, I was honestly overjoyed.
But little did I know the impact this beautifully designed book would have on my social media addiction.
Running a start-up online business and webinars “requires” you to be online. Yet there's a fine line between focused social media scheduling, 'networking' and procrastiscrolling. The latter infiltrated my daily rhythm more than I cared to admit.
In recent weeks, my screen time was about 5 hours a day and I was horrified when I saw this data. That’s the equivalent of a part-time job.
This made me stop and think:
💭 Why am I using socials so much?
💭 What need is it serving?
💭 What could I be doing instead?"
And I've chosen to do a digital detox for Dry July.
In previous experiments, I’ve replaced the social media check with incessant email checking.
So this time I’m trying a two-stage process to encourage a steep reduction in screen time, which is discussed in more detail in this episode.
1) A week before the detox, delete all apps from the phone and only use desktop to check once or twice a day
2) Set strict limits when checking the platforms
3) View the digital detox as an experiment and have self-compassion

In this episode we share few fundamentals we teach in the BREATHE Program:
We can’t avoid stress altogether.
But we can incorporate daily practices into our lives that will not only help to cope with our current stress levels, but also prevent long-term effects on our health and wellbeing, such as:
If you would like to unpack ways to support yourself through self-care activities, we’ve included in the show notes a tool we walk our clients through in the BREATHE Program.
It’s called “The Yin and Yang of Self-Compassion” and helps you map actions you can take to nurture masculine and feminine aspects of yourself in times of stress.
It's a free download, no need to add your email address, just hit the button and enjoy understanding this method of self-care at a deeper level.

Today’s episode dives deep into the concept of being a multipotentialite, yes it’s a thing, and I’ll share a bit of my life and career journey over the last twenty years.
Have you ever tried to write your major definite purpose and every single iteration felt slightly foreign?
Maybe your resume shows polarities in sectors and job titles and you struggle to answer the age-old question “What do you do?”.
It may be possible that you’ve studied a degree and never immersed yourself in that path as your ‘career’.
If you showed a slight raised hand to any of these examples, I invite you to consider maybe you’re a multipotentialite!
In her 2015 TED Talk, Why Some of Us Don’t Have One True Calling[1], and on her blog[2] Emilie Wapnick shares the challenges and superpowers of a multipod.
“Multipotentialites often struggle with:
Conversely, these challenges may exist because of a misunderstanding of what makes a multipod tick, and their inherent gifts and talents…
Wapnick goes on to explain, “When multipotentialites are supported and encouraged to embrace their diverse skills and experiences, they’re able to tap into their super powers:
Many people spend days, weeks, months, years, and even decades in careers that are opposed to who they are destined to be as spiritual beings.
You CAN find alignment in your career, spirituality, health, and relationships. It’s all about finding work you love or learning to love the work you do.
We’re not asking you to leave your 9-to-5 job to pursue something else and have a fulfilling life – there are always ways to find joy in your career or work whether you’re working full-time or part-time, studying, or looking for a new path.

“My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humour, and some style.” - Maya Angelou
Inspired by this Maya Angelou quote in her mid-40s, it soon became Mish Green's mantra as she raised a teenage boy and supported her father through his battle with cancer. Having not long separated from her partner of nearly twenty years, Mish was navigating life on her own in what seemed like everything had collided.
Mish was feeling stuck and lost. Stress and anxiety were ruling her life and affecting her health. In survival mode, Mish wanted to thrive.
Mish started with a daily morning walk and a simple meditation practice. Her morning routine became an essential part of her day. She started to explore mindfulness and how she could incorporate in her day. Mish devoured articles and books, followed like-minded people on social media, listened to podcasts, and participated in challenges, courses and coaching programs.
Mish set herself a goal of walking the Camino. That opportunity came in 2018 to walk the Portuguese Coastal Camino from Porto to Santiago. The week prior Mish found herself at the lowest point ever. She was burnt out, experiencing high levels of stress and anxiety. She doubted she would be able to get on a plane and fly halfway round the world. Somehow Mish found the strength, got on the plane and walked 350km over 14 days extending Camino to Finisterre. It was the best thing she ever did, connecting with fellow pilgrims, experiencing the lows and highs whilst overcoming challenges and obstacles. Mish returned with the realisation that our life’s journey is our Camino.
“Don’t come to the Camino looking for answers. Instead, come with an open heart and you may be surprised by what you find.” Jane Blanchard
A Mindful Middle continues as a journey Mish wants to share, an appreciation for life and living in the moment in the middle years embracing mindfulness, mediation and walking. Mish's goal is to take groups of women to Spain and walk the Camino.
