Hi, I’m Jim Eaves and you are listening to the honest filmmaker podcast, career advice from people in the business.

Today I’m talking to Actor and performer Ross Mulan. Ross is an accomplished stage and screen actor. He’s toured with big theatre productions, he’s a voice over artist and has played iconic characters in television and film in Doctor Who, Antman and The Wasp Quantamania  and as the White Walker in HBO’s Game of Thrones.

I had a great chat with Ross about what it’s like to be an actor, in particular when acting with heavy prosthetics make up as fantasy characters. He gave me some great tips for actors and the make up sfx team that looks after them.

Today I’m joined by writer/director MJ Dixon.
 
 MJ has directed so many shorts and features I struggled to find the exact number but they include;
 Slasher House (2012), Legacy or Thorn (2014), Cleaver: Rise of the Killer Clown (2015), Hollower (2016), Slasher House 2 (2016), The Haunting of Molly Bannister (2019), Mask of Thron (2019), Pandamonium (2020), Slasher House 3 (2024).
 
 MJ runs UK Production company Mycho Pictures with his wife Anna and has created an entire horror universe.  I chatted to MJ about how he crowd funds his feature films, his top things to consider if you're thinking of crowd funding, his advice for directors and some war stories about sales and distribution.

This week I chatted to special effects make up artist Jon Moore. 

It was difficult for me not to geek out on this one as Jon as worked on Marvel Cinematic Universe  movies like Captain America the First Avenger, Avengers Infinity War, Avengers Endgame and all of the Guardians of the Galaxy Movies as one of the team that makes up Dave Bautista as Drax. 

Jon’s also worked on The Witcher, Doctor Who, Red Dwarf, Game of Thrones, check out his IMDB profile and you’ll see most of the biggest shows of the past 10 years. 

This is a great one if you are interested in special effects make up and want to find out how Jon got into the industry and his advice to help you do the same. He also gave me some great tips on the practicalities of working on big productions. It’s also a fascinating look behind the scenes on some of Marvels biggest hits. Enjoy!

This week I chat to Children’s TV Producer/Director Matt Rene. Matt’s worked on massive kids shows like the Teletubbies, Topsy and Tim, Bear Behaving Badly and the recent BAFTA winning Apple TV show Lovely little farm. 

Matts also worked as a producer on Celebrity Big Brother. 

Matt worked his way to where he is from a job as runner so if you’re looking to start your career in the same way, this one is an eye opener. He gives some great advice on working with kids and animals and handling the pressure of big television productions.

Today I’m joined by writer/director Graham Hughes. 

Graham has directed four feature films and joins us fresh from his latest film ‘hostile dimensions’ premiere screening at this years fright fest film festival, as well as screening at a number of high profile genre festivals since.

Today I’m talking to professional puppeteer Olly Taylor-Wyatt. Olly’s been working on big budget movies and tv shows, including Star Wars The Force Awakens, Solo: A Star Wars Story, The Muppets Most Wanted and as one of the lead puppeteers on the Netflix Dark Crystal Series: Age of Resistance.

On this episode I’m joined by writer director and film lecturer Pat Higgins.

Pat has directed  a whopping 9 films, both features and anthology pics. His last film was the number one project on kickstarter and closed out the 2022 Fright Fest Film Festival. Pat has also written a number of scripts, some of which have been optioned.

GETTING YOUR SCRIPT OPTIONED – HOW IT WORKS

I spoke to Pat about scriptwriting, the logistics of getting a script optioned, getting an agent, crowd funding your films and practical tips for directing on set.

Pat is an Essex based writer and director, known for Hellbride (2007), The Devil’s Music (2008) and Powertool Cheerleaders vs the Boyband of the Screeching Dead (2022). Described by Fangoria as “one of the most promising British Horror directors”.

His horror-musical Powertool Cheerleaders vs the Boyband of the Screeching Dead was the number one project on crowd funding platform kickstarter and went on to premiere at the Prince Charles Cinema in Leicester Square, London, on the closing night of the Fright Fest Film Festival.

Pat’s also known for his sell out shows about the ups and downs of filmmaking “Werewolves, Cheerleaders & Chainsaws” and “How Not to Make a Horror Movie”. He has had scripts optioned in the UK and US and regularly presents his “How to write a feature script in 30 days” writers workshops.
