The Ice Garden

It’s time for Episode 43 — the Meghan Huertas episode — of your favorite NWHL-centric podcast! This week Erica and Mike break down the first three games of the 2018-19 NWHL season which featured two wins from the Minnesota Whitecaps and a win from the Buffalo Beauts.

Should Riveters fans be worried after the defending Isobel Cup Champs dropped their first two games of the season? Should Whale fans be losing sleep after their team registered just 10 shots in their home opener? Give a listen to this week’s show to find out what we think!

We also discuss the Buffalo Beauts’ most recent signing, the first NWHL Player of the Week (as well as our alternate picks), some news and notes from around the league, as well as our takeaways from the NWHL’s opening weekend.

In our final offseason show of 2018 Mike and Erica discuss how many roster spots each team has left, what happened in the NWHL’s preseason, and some big news that came out just before the start of the 2018-19 season.

For the second-straight year Twitter will be live streaming a Game of the Week this season. Another major news item that just came out was the revelation of one of the NWHL’s investors. Texas Rangers co-owner and COO Neil Leibman has invested in the league and Mike and Erica talk about what that means, how important transparency is from the league, and much, much more!

This week, in a special edition of the Founding 4 Podcast, Erica and Mike recorded the show live at the inaugural Champions Cup between Luleå Hockey/MSSK and the Metropolitan Riveters.

While making some in-game observations about the SDHL and NWHL champions and their historic meeting at Princeton’s Hobey Baker Memorial Rink, Erica and Mike discussed the retirement of Sam Faber, how the NWHL’s rosters have come together, and catch our listeners up with the rest of the NWHL’s current events.

We are also joined by Luleå head coach Fredrik Glader and new Riveters head coach, Randy Velischek. Both discuss the Champion Cup matchup, and what to expect from the SDHL and NWHL defending champions in the 2018-19 season.

It’s our NCAA spectacular episode! A warning ahead of the episode: it’s a long one and a bit different! At the beginning, we chatted about Meghan Duggan and Gillian Apps wedding (mostly their dresses!) and Caroline Ouellette retirement. Then we’ll play for your three interviews. We talked with Grant, Katy, and Nora about each NCAA conference. If you’re interested in specific conferences, here’s where each starts: Hockey East - 17:12 // ECA - 40:39 // CHA - 54:44 //WCHA - 69:03

This week on the Founding 4 Podcast Mike and Erica talk about the latest comings and goings in the NWHL. Can you believe the preseason is already here? Let’s talk some hockey.

The Boston Pride re-signed former NWHL Goaltender of the Year Brittany Ott to join Katie Burt and Madison Litchfield in the goal crease. The Metropolitan Riveters brought back a veteran of their own by re-signing Erika Lawler, securing their center depth. But the Connecticut Whale out-did everyone this past week by signing four players, including NWHL trailblazers Elena Orlando and Jordan Brickner.

In addition to half a dozen players signing new one-year contracts, we learned that the Riveters have finally found their head coach! Mike and Erica talk about Randy Velischek, the coaching staffs around the league, the Buffalo Beauts’ pursuit of a new forward, and the NWHL opening its doors up to partners outside of the NHL.

Oh, and we get to a few mailbag questions, too! Will Pittsburgh be the next home of an NWHL team, or will it be Detroit? What will the league look like in the next two or three years? We talk about all of this and more this week on the Founding 4 Podcast!

We’ve got all sorts of news to talk about on this week’s episode of the Founding 4 Podcast! The NWHL got it’s first team-specific major sponsorship deal, and the Metropolitan Riveters will play their home opener against the Minnesota Whitecaps at the Prudential Center!

We also throw shade at those making excuses not to cover women's hockey, while also offering some great folks to read and follow if you’re a new fan of the NWHL.

Remember to send in those questions and conversation topics using #Founding4Pod! Be sure to check out our friends Hannah Bevis and Michelle Jay and their Top Shelf Podcast.

This week Mike and Erica break down all of the signings from the last week of the NWHL offseason and take a look at how the rosters are shaping up.

We wrap up this week’s show with a wide-ranging discussion about the growth of the women’s game, inspired by Mike’s article that went up on The Ice Garden on Sep. 5. How is the women’s game growing? Where is it going? Why is it growing? Does the NWHL have a hand in that growth? We cover all of that and more this week on the Founding 4 Podcast.
