Alberta just drew a line in the sand — and Ottawa isn't going to like it.

On March 18, 2026, Premier Danielle Smith introduced Bill 18: the Safeguards for Last Resort Termination of Life Act. It restricts MAiD (Medical Assistance in Dying) to those with a 12-month prognosis, bans it for mental illness as a sole condition, and prohibits doctors from ever suggesting death to a patient who hasn't asked.

As a veteran who has walked through trauma and dark terrain, I know what it means when the system stops offering hope. This isn't just policy — this is a rescue mission.

The federal government has delayed MAiD for mental illness until March 2027. Alberta isn't waiting to see what happens next.
