This is Part 1 of a 13 Part Series in which Killafornia Dreaming will be discussing the rise and fall of Elizabeth's Holmes of the now defunct biotech company Theranos.  For more than a dozen years, Theranos worked tirelessly in an effort to develop a revolutionary new blood testing device that only needed a single drop of blood to run hundreds of different diagnostics that was compact enough that patients would be able to have a device in their very own home.  Elizabeth was able to bring in millions upon millions of dollars from investors, not only getting Theranos to reach a peak valuation of $9 billion dollars, but also making herself the youngest  self-made female billionaire in the world at the time.  But despite all the hype and high powered investors and board members, the company turned out to be a house of cards that eventually would come tumbling down thanks to one pesky Wall Street Journal Investigative Reporter who spectacularly blew the roof off Theranos.

The Murder of San Diego Attorney Tim MacNeil Planned By His Step-Daughter Brae Hansen And Carried Out By Her Brother Nathaniel Gann

In the Rolando Village neighborhood of San Diego, California, local defense attorney Tim MacNeil had come home in the middle of his work day on July 19, 2007 to pick up his 17 year old step daughter, Brae, for a lunch date she had planned for them to celebrate his 63rd birthday.  But shortly after Tim walked into his home, he was confronted by a masked gunman, who bound both of them with zip ties, demanding he give him the combination to his safe.  When Tim refused, the gunman opened fire, striking Tim with 3 out of the 4 shots he fired.   Brae was left alive and unharmed.  In less than 12 hours, San Diego homicide detectives would have their prime suspect in custody.  And soon, a heartbreaking story would emerge...one of fear, abandonment, rejections, and a desperation to be loved.

The 1990 Murder Of UCLA Student Ronald Baker Perpetrated By His Own Roommates Duncan Martinez And Nathaniel Blalock

In June of 1990, the day after the longest day of the year, hikers discovered the lifeless body of 21 year old UCLA student Ron Baker.  He was laying just inside south opening of the Santa Susana Tunnel which had also become known as the Manson Tunnel because of the close proximity Charles Manson and his family lived to it from 1968-1969.  Because Ron was killed in the Manson Tunnel, on the longest day of the year, and his throat being slit as well as his new found interest in Wicca, rumors of this being a ritualistic Satanic killing dominated the headlines.  After all, Los Angeles was just a few years removed from the Satanic Panic-fueled McMartin Preschool Abuse and Satan-worshiping serial killer Richard Ramirez cases.  But, it would turn out to be a killing much closer to home, but not any less dark or evil.

The 1989 San Bernardino Southern Pacific Train Derailment And CalNev Pipeline Explosion

In May of 1989, a quiet neighborhood in the City of San Bernardino, California was rocked was not one but two separate, but related disasters 13 days apart.  In the end, 6 people were left dead, 18 homes were destroyed and questions as to how something like this could happen, especially twice at the same location less than 2 weeks apart.

The 2009 Break In At the Natural History Museum In Tring England Carried Out By Gifted Flautist Edwin Rist [Part 7]

He was an American flautist living in London, studying at the Royal academy of music.  At only 20 years of age, he was intelligent, gifted, talented...a prodigy.  On the evening of June 24, 2009 he performed at the Academy in “London Soundscapes”...featuring the music of composers such as Joseph Hayden, George Frideric Handel, and Felix Mendelssohn.  But his flute wasn’t the only thing he brought with him the evening of his performance.  He had with him a relatively large piece of luggage...a rolling suitcase that contained in it the accoutrements of a thief - gloves, a small flashlight, a pair of wire cutters, a glass cutting saw with a diamond blade.  After the concert, he retrieved the suitcase from his locker and put his plan in motion...making his way towards the Natural History Museum in the town of Tring.  This wasn’t the first time he’d been there, but it would certainly be his last.  After months of reconnaissance - investigating, casing, scouting, scrutinizing, studying, evaluating, analyzing, planning - he was confident he would be able to make his way around walls, barbed wire, cameras and guards in order to get what he was there to pilfer...a collection of coveted relics of the past...many of which no longer existing anywhere in world...unique, rare, endangered, extinct...priceless and irreplaceable...all for a hobby that grew into an obsession...and a golden flute.
