Sumner Brooks, an eating disorder dietitian and founder of EDRDpro, joins me to discuss the first principle of Intuitive Eating, Rejecting the Diet Mentality. As long as the diet mentality is prioritized—or as Sumner puts it, we make food decisions based on the outcome expected—it will be nearly impossible to eat intuitively.
ETA: There seems to have been an issue with the audio recording, so Sumner's voice sounds a little off. Technology isn't always our best friend. :)
While listening to this episode, think about your own diet mentality and what drives the food choices you make every day. Are you avoiding or working toward a certain outcome (e.g. weight, "health", or something else)? Or are you trying to tune into your body's signals of hunger, fullness, satisfaction, etc? (More on all of that to come!)
It may be uncomfortable to realize that even though you may not be following a "diet," there are still many filters, or rules, by which you make food decisions. We know how that feels. We've been there. Stick with us.
We give examples of the various levels of diet thinking, and how to work through this principle to bring yourself some food freedom. It helps you build the foundation on which you'll continue to build your intuitive eating habits throughout this series.

Now is not the time to start a new diet, or "get back on track"—neither is tomorrow, nor the day after that. It won't work. But we have something else for you, that just might save your sanity.
Introducing: RD Real Talk's first series, on Intuitive Eating.
Evelyn Tribole, MS RD is the co-author of the book Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program That Works. It is NOT a diet; it is not an eating plan; it is not a set of nutrition rules. And it is not simply eating when you're hungry, and stopping when you're full.
Evelyn helps me kick off a 10-episode series on Intuitive Eating (IE), in which I cover each of the 10 principles with fellow dietitians and therapists. She takes us back to 1995, when the book was first published, and how she and her co-author, Elyse Resch, finally decided enough was enough. No more putting clients on diets, no more weight loss plans, no more pretending that either of these things "work" for people. They questioned and challenged traditional dietetic practices, found the research to support their paradigm, and put it out to the world.
She's NOT into this whole "clean eating" movement, wonders when taking pride in the way we eat became important to our identities (a la Orthorexia), and indulges a burning question I had about her Olympic Trials Marathon run (🤓).
I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did, and can't wait to share the rest of the IE series with you! Stay tuned.

Abby Langer, Toronto-based dietitian and real talker, joins me to review the worst diets of 2017. (See also: All diets.) Abby will hand it to you straight, no chaser, EVERY TIME. I love her writing, her videos, her Diet Reviews, and the way she was up to do this podcast with me, no hesitation whatsoever. We talk about everything from companies that have threatened to (try to) take away her credentials to why the Whole30 persists, year after year. (SMH.)
Join us for a final RD Real Talk episode de 2017! Fair warning: this episode is explicit, because how can it not be? We're talking about fad diets.

Coming oh-so-SOON: The first RD Real Talk series! An 11-episode series diving into Intuitive Eating, that starts with one of the book's authors, Evelyn Tribole. Check out the series page on my website, and let me know if you have any questions before we get started!
Emily Braaten, a fellow DC-based dietitian, is on the show today! She recently launched her new, official RD website, and walks us through the process. (Side note: I think she should add "website consultant" to her list of services.) (Also: This is not sponsored by Squarespace.) We talk about the difficulties of getting into the internship, why she chose to get a Master's degree, and how she landed in her work with Eating Disorders.
Real talk moments: the blissful simplicity of a home-cooked meal after a long moving transition, and NOT being the food police.
Related: I usually don't care what you're eating. (Unsolicited permission to come up with random job titles at your next holiday party.)
Coming soon!
A full RD Real Talk series on Intuitive Eating. We're kicking things off with an introduction episode, in which I got to chat with Evelyn Tribole—one of the Intuitive Eating co-authors. (CAREER HIGH.) Stay tuned on my website and here on the podcast—the series launches in January 2018.

Corinne Dobbas, registered dietitian and dating coach and real talker, is on the show today! (It was a bit of a surprise for her, but it worked out just fine!) She's not afraid to start any job or business, but once wondered if she wasn't smart enough to be a dietitian. Thankfully, that ultimately didn't hold her back.
Have you felt like you're not ___ enough to do something? Not informed enough to start a business? Not qualified enough to do a job? Not creative enough to start a blog / share your work? Not experienced enough to call yourself a certain type of dietitian, or consultant, or coach? LISTEN: You are, or you will get there, and all you have to do is start.
We talk about her matchmaking days (#realjob), how her career got started and has evolved, and what she's doing next to be true to what she wants from her work.
We talk about imposter syndrome.
We talk about what it means to be a coach versus counselor.
We talk about our relationships.
We talk about our side-turned-full hustles.
We talk about "success" and how we're not here to define that for you.

Alissa Rumsey—now known for her work in freelance writing, private practice, and as an experienced spokesperson for the Academy—started, and loved, her career in clinical nutrition. During her clinical work, she also started writing, side-hustling, and at the suggestion of her boss (and mentor), applied to become a spokesperson. If you work somewhere for more than a few years, you learn a lot, develop key relationships, and may have an incredible mentor who helps push you in new directions. She may convince you that clinical is the right place to start. (You do you!)

Kelly Jones, MS RD CSSD, is my friend and co-host of our Fit Fueling: Mindful Eating for Active women course. We get REAL about why we decided to create and run this virtual nutrition class, and it has to do with disordered eating among active humans (not just women, but we do primarily work with women). We've both had personal experiences that taught us a lot about sports nutrition, and eventually found intuitive and mindful eating practices. The two may seem like opposite ends of the spectrum, but we think they have to meet somewhere in the middle to keep us all sane, well-fueled, and healthy.
Our next virtual course starts Monday, November 27 -- Register to join us! (Or visit kellyjonesnutrition.com/fit-fueling for more information.) This course is enjoyed by active women in a variety of sports (or no sport!) and RDs alike.

Rachael Hartley joins the show from South Carolina this week! She's fka Avocado a Day Nutrition, but changed her mind and rebranded this year. It happens! It's OK. She also started her private practice after changing her mind about her career path in clinical. It happens! She's succeeding on her own terms.
Mentioned in the intro:
We get real about some of those early business moments, candy eating, and transitioning into a non-diet approach.
We answer a listener question about "bouncing around" in the clinical space, which could be applicable to anyone wanting to change career paths and, well, bounce around a bit. And we talk about "Diet Avocados" coming to a grocery store near you. (HALP.)
Rachael is a panelist on the upcoming Women's Health RD Real Talk Webinar. Click here to register early to get a 1:1 mentoring call, and submit questions to the panel of RD experts!

Deanna Segrave-Daly is on the show this week! She's been an entrepreneur for almost a decade, after starting her nutrition career in communications and with a double-major in Marketing. You may know her from her work with Blog Brulee, The Recipe Redux, Teaspoon Communications, or Healthy Aperture. Even if you haven't heard of any of those, don't take gorgeous food photos (hand-raised), and aren't in the nutrition field, Deanna's advice will apply to you.
Curious about this nontraditional nutrition career path? Click to watch the RD Real Talk Webinar on how to navigate your nontraditional nutrition career! (HeatherCaplan.com/Events)
Deanna reminds us that we don't have to go at this alone, we don't have to pick ONE specialty, and we certainly don't have to be great at writing to be a blogger or communications RD.

More coming up on RD Real Talk: A 10-part Intuitive Eating series, which will be followed by 1:1 coaching episodes. Interested? Apply here! (https://goo.gl/6E3CnX)

Angie Hasmann, program director for the University of Virginia Health System Dietetic Internship, is on the show today! If you're into a choose-your-adventure type of program, she's your gal. Also, we could all take a tip from the way she went about getting her first job. BOLD. And I like it. In addition to directing the UVA internship, she's a boss dietitian in a clinical setting. Oh, then we dive into bariatric surgery and how one study suggests this "weight loss surgery" is linked to "lower risk of cancer."
Bonus: She adds job-searching and resume crafting tips, helping us all out as we navigate this career world.
