  • 69: IE Stories - From engineering to eating disorder to IE dietitian

Steph Saullo has been on the show before, but this time we dive into her personal story, how she recovered from disordered eating, and why she cautions some people from studying nutrition. By degree, she is an aerospace engineer. But in a phase of disordered eating and food obsession, she got graduate degree and completed her dietetic internship to become a registered dietitian. She shares how she went through recovery, what she learned during pregnancy, how this has shaped her work, and what she's working on now!

  • 68: IE Stories - How new clothes and a cookbook can do the trick

Meme Inge, dietitian and cookbook author (!!) joins me on the show today. We go through all the nitty gritty details of how her career has evolved. She's a food blogger, and self-published a cookbook of *GASP* southern, traditional, family meals. And it's great. But as a "recovering perfectionist", it was a long road for her to get here. That road involved learning, and then relearning, the concepts of intuitive eating, body respect, and food freedom. It involved taking a step back and thinking about what kind of life she could have, and what kind of cookbook she could publish, if diet culture wasn't at the wheel.

I LOVE talking with Meme, and hope you'll love hearing her story.

  • 67: IE Stories - Yes, it's possible to use IE in clinical dietetics, from day one

Amy Hanneke is in her first dietetics job, working in clinical as the only RD on staff in a rural hospital. She went through her own process of unlearning diet culture, dealing with an IBS diagnosis, and working with a dietitian, experiencing the client side of things. Now, she's proudly using the concepts of HAES and Intuitive Eating in her work, and proving that MNT and these paradigms are far from mutually exclusive.

  • 66: IE Stories - When it starts with avoiding what feels triggering to you

Christine Ellerbrock is a second-career dietitian, toddler mom, currently working a few jobs in various clinical settings. We dive right into how eating intuitively has saved us in the postpartum days, why honoring hunger is a key aspect of un-learning diet culture, and what calorie equations even mean (or what they were intended for).

Christine keeps it real about the little things she still struggles with from time to time, how she recovered from disordered eating in college, and how she incorporates these IE and HAES concepts in creative ways with her clinical and corporate wellness clients.

  • 65: IE Stories - Unlearning assumptions about (RD) appearances

Sarah Anzlovar joins me on the show to talk about her journey to being a second-career dietitian, and adopting Intuitive Eating in her career. When she decided to study nutrition, she believed dietitians might have to look at certain way in order to be taken seriously. She had to unlearn this, and embrace intuitive eating, to become the dietitian she is today.

We talk about her various career moves and how she's landed where she is today, with a new private practice and a job she enjoys. We talk about what makes us feel like we aren't "good" at counseling, when really, it's that we don't believe in spreading diet culture. And we talk about undoing assumptions about appearance, and exercise identity.

  • 64: IE Stories - How an MNT professor is adding HAES to her curriculum

Monica Milonovich is a dietitian and professor at University of Texas at Austin. She teaches Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) to the UT Austin dietetic students, and also works with the dietetic interns. Last year, one of her students* asked to present on Intuitive Eating and Health at Every Size, and Monica agreed without knowing what she was in for. That presentation left her feeling uncomfortable, curious, and ready to change.

*If you listened to the previous episode, featuring Lauren Newman, one of the current dietetic interns at UT Austin, you're now hearing the other side of the story!

Monica is working hard to expand her nutrition practices to embrace this weight-neutral, non-diet approach, and is hoping to change the UT Austin didactic programming to include this.

With this episode, I hope you might feel inspired to explore these concepts and see how they can work with your nutrition career, and/or present these topics to your professor, colleagues, or peers who may be new to all of the above.

  • 63: IE Stories - It starts with changing some MNT slides

Lauren Newman is what we in the dietetic world call an "RD2Be". She's completing a Coordinated program at UT Austin, and will be joining us with her RD certification soon.

She is part of a Facebook group for new and aspiring dietitians who are interested in intuitive eating (IE) and Health at Every Size (HAES). I reached out to her after she posted about something big; she gave a presentation on Intuitive Eating and HAES in her Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) class.

    Baller move.

In this first IE Stories episode, we get real about the initial assumptions Lauren had about these philosophies. She tried hard to prove them wrong, to stay in the weight-based world of nutrition that she believed to be true, to "fight" the so-called obesity epidemic! Then we talk about the Big Nutrition Goal she has for her career, and the work it will take to get there.

Find more about Lauren on her site, laurennewmanrd2be.com, or via Instagram @gofeedyourself_.

  • 61: Coaching - A dietitian wants to let go of structure all around

This RD Real Talk coaching call focuses on how to lose the comfort of structure in our approach to counseling and incorporate intuitive eating into her practice. It's not easy to do, but we all start somewhere!

We talk about nutrition counseling, starting a private practice, practice IE principles in life and work, and how to approach clients who need Medical Nutrition Therapy.

  • 60: Coaching - A dietitian's desire to drop the diet mentality and trust intuitive eating

This is the first RD Real Talk coaching episode! These coaching episodes are an extension of the Intuitive Eating series, exploring the concepts with listeners who reached out and agreed to have a one-on-one recorded session. (All personal details are kept anonymous.)

    In this coaching episode:

A dietitian is about to switch jobs and will now have a new schedule, and will be able to step away from weight-loss work. She's realizing that the diet mentality has a stronghold on her approach to nutrition. She dabbled in weight loss for her wedding, and wrapped much her of dietitian identity up in certain healthy eating practices and messages.  She's curious about intuitive eating, but struggling with how to implement the principles for herself.
