Kelly Jones is my business partner in Fit Fueling—our online course that integrates sports nutrition and intuitive eating practices for active women. We've been running the course for over 18 months now, and learn something new every time!
In this episode, we chat about how and why we decided to start an online course, the systems we use, the failures and successes we've had, and what we're doing now. We also dive into the most frequently asked questions from our groups, and how we feel bout weight set point, calorie intake for athletes (and humans), and the tracking apps that just won't die.

Cara Harbstreet, of StreetSmart Nutrition and a new startup, Libre Connections, joins me to talk business, investing in yourself, and mind mapping! (I had to look up what mind-mapping is, btw.) She's gone from being a new RD with a full-time job, to starting her private practice, to joining a startup incubator all in just a few years. She had an idea, and ran with it. Cue: Libre Connections.
We talk about successes and failures in business, starting something and learning along the way, and what happens when you invest in yourself (even if it's just a few bucks to get you started).
Oh, and we talk about being sassy on Twitter (@StreetSmartRD).

Jessie Hoffman is a nutrition PhD candidate, and budding toxicologist! She took some time away from her research and dissertation to chat about how to identify weight stigma, a convenience sample, and researcher bias in any given article. Whether you're interested in the non-diet approach to nutrition and finding resources to support why this work is essential, or you're just curious about research things, this one's for you.
Before we dive into the topic du jour, I answer a listener's question about the inclusivity (or perceived lack thereof) of the non-diet approach and intuitive eating paradigms. If you've lost weight on a diet, can you still join us? (Spoiler alert: Yes, please!)

Jennifer McGurk started her private practice to help people recover from eating disorders, after experiencing an eating disorder herself. Then she built a course for dietitians, Pursuing Private Practice, to help you build your business. So, she's in the business of helping people! And she's damn good at it.
Today, we talk about the parallels of eating disorder recovery and building a business, two things we've both experienced in different ways.
Check out Jennifer's Pursuing Private Practice resources if you're interested!

Jennie Zabrinski is a sports dietitian, former college athlete, and intuitive eater. She's the Associate Athletics Director for Sports Nutrition at Virginia Tech, and has been a collegiate sports dietitian for eight years. Recently, she launched an Instagram account (@followyourblissnutrition) for college athletes learning to navigate the real world, without a rigid training schedule or dining hall menu. We talk about how she's gradually bringing IE to college sports nutrition, and why her new Instagram nutrition resource may be crucial to helping athletes figure out their relationship with food outside of sports.

Rachel Manor is a sports dietitian at University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Her career path has largely focused on collegiate athletics, but hasn't always focused on Intuitive Eating. She dishes out some real talk about how she's gradually learning to use these principles in this high-level of sport, and in a university setting.

Alexis Fairbanks is a runner, teacher, and one of my co-founders of Lane 9 Project. As a collegiate athlete, she struggled not only with disordered eating, but also with acknowledging that her relationship with food, and her body, was disordered. She suffered from stress fractures, decline in performance, and decreasing self confidence. Now, in her recovery from both disordered eating and hypothalamic amenorrhea (HA), she's working hard to help other women get the help they need.
We talk about how she finally recognized and acknowledged her eating disorder, how she's let go of her food rules, why we started Lane 9 Project, and what inspired her to write about her story on Runner's World.
We also talk about how she's faster, stronger, and much healthier as a runner now, and what that means to her. (Spoiler: She has qualified for Boston AT Boston, so, there's that.)
If you're struggling with hypothalamic amenorrhea, consider joining me and Kelly Jones MS RD CSSD for our newest Fit Fueling course, focused on HA recovery. It starts September 10th. Register here!

I asked for questions, you answered. Then, I answered your questions! But first, read the disclaimer below.
These listener-submitted inquiries touch on topics such as questioning Intuitive Eating or calorie counting, how to tell if a client is "interested" in nutrition or obsessing over it, how to do research in a weight-neutral paradigm, how to learn more about the "business side" of dietetics, and recovering from disordered eating.

Heather Irvine is the former Food and Nutrition editor at Runner's World, now a freelance journalist (and fellow new mom!). We exchange real talk about why diet messages are so prevalent in all forms of media, what people are drawn to, and how publications perpetuate this cycle. She provides tips to freelance writers about how to combat the nonstop diet-focused articles, how to get published, and best practices for writing, pitching, and interviewing. Heather shares her experience with an eating disorder in college, how she got her Runner's World job, and what she's doing now!

Leanne Ray is a dietitian in the Denver area, currently working in corporate wellness and public health. When she first learned the concepts of intuitive eating in grad school, she was interested, but not convinced. In fact, she went on to write her thesis on how IE could be used for weight management.
Now, she's studying and practicing intuitive eating as it's meant to be—helping change the culture of her workplace, and change the norms of corporate wellness (which is very weight-centric).
She's also about to launch her own business, full time, so check out leanneray.com to learn more!
