The conversation begins with a crucial insight: before any discussion of husbands and wives, we must recognize that all humans are first called to be "wives" in relation to Christ—following, receiving, being transformed. This universal spiritual positioning fundamentally reshapes how we understand Paul's marriage imagery.

Diving into Genesis, we uncover the stunning revelation of God's two-fold nature—expressing both masculine and feminine principles from the very first verses. "Male and female created them" isn't just about human biology, but about the divine polarities present within the Godhead itself. This transforms our understanding of the "profound mystery" Paul references when discussing marriage.

The mystery deepens as we explore humanity's original wholeness, subsequent separation, and yearning for reunion. Marriage emerges not as a power structure but as sacred medicine—healing the fundamental split in our nature. This explains why Jesus taught that in the resurrection, we'll no longer marry—the healing work will be complete, the wholeness restored.

These archetypes offer a healing perspective for our modern struggles with relationship dynamics. Rather than fixating on who leads and who follows based on gender, we're invited to see intimate partnerships as participation in the cosmic wedding that heals our brokenness and points toward our ultimate reunion with the divine.

Paul describes a re-ordering of the universe through Christ based on submission (huppotassō, Greek). We are each invited, out of our own freedom and dignity, to follow the True Human Being, one who possesses a wisdom and heart wider and deeper than our own. How does our growing union with Christ Jesus begin to transform our relationships with each other? Can we walk with each other in love, “as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God” (Eph 5:2)? Are we able to submit?

What is the relationship between Christ’s light and the darkness in and around us that does not bear fruit (Eph 5:11-14). As Paul himself experienced so dramatically on his way to Damascus, the road walked with Christ is not filled with condemnation of others or ourselves. Christ’s light shines on all of who we are. Can we bring all of who we are to him and open ourselves to the transformative, healing processes flowing towards us? When we are filled with God, the qualities sought in states of ecstasy are available — expansion, revelation, communion, connection, etc. But, at the same time, our humanity dignity is enhanced, not debased. These are the questions and themes explored in today’s episode.

Our series continues with Jonah and Patrick reflecting on the people of Ephesus, who were being led into a new faith experience with Jesus Christ. The birth of a new community in Christ was a fusion of Jewish and pagan traditions, both cultural and spiritual. What were the consequences of this new light dawning in their daily lives? Paul offers us all a discernment practice—when we turn towards Christ’s light, the shadow in us is revealed. One gives life, the other is rooted in death. “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”   Eph 5:14 (ESV)

Paul calls us to be “imitators of God” while we live and wrestle with darkness. How do we fulfill this call? God actually reveals God’s nature as a being who “lives in the darkness”—the stars in the night sky reveal this, the beginning of Genesis reveals this, Christ reveals this on the cross. So, we could understand being “imitators of God” as becoming “light in the darkness.” How do we live and wrestle with the darkness in a divine way?

Our next episode continues with Paul’s description of what we might expect as we attempt to put on the true garment of our humanity, the resurrected Jesus Christ (Eph 4:25-32). The Risen One was transformed almost beyond recognition, but he retained his wounds. He suffers for and with us, willingly sharing in our suffering and offering us his peace. That is the new meaning of being human—acknowledging our wounds and offering our substance for our Beloveds.

In this second part of Patrick and Jonah’s conversation, we are given insight into what “putting on the new human” might feel like. "We want a name. What do we want to build something? We want a name. What do we want to build? Whose name do we want? To be receiving glory. So I need these maturation processes in me to get me ready. So we needed, I think, to fall Right, you will be, to realize the eternal purposes. We needed a maturation process, and that maturation process seems to be sin and death, to enter a fallen place and every myth and every secret story has this. You need to fall into Sheol, you need to go down into the depths, and then you'll be able to fulfill your mission and participate in eternity."

The writer of the letter to the Ephesians draws his readers into a sacred calling. It is an invitation into a divine temple building project called, "the body of Christ." It is one way to describe the deep secret, the spiritual purpose behind "Christ-Community" and sparks a lengthy and rich conversation between Jonah and Patrick that covers much of the entire territory of sacred scripture and divine anthropology.

The first attempt by humanity to build a temple to heaven in a united project was the Tower of Babel. Why did God thwart this effort? What does it mean that humanity was seeking "a name" for itself in this project? And what all does this have to do with us now? These questions, and much more, are taken up in this episode.
