  • It’s Not The Cell Phone’s Fault (TMB103)
With school back in full swing, so is the parent's eternal search for the best consequence for managing the problems they are having with their child. Whether it is homework hassles, school behavior reports, or poor grades, parents are constantly looking for the best way to "motivate" their child into compliance.
Unfortunately, this often leads to parents using the easy and somewhat thoughtless punishment of cell phone removal. That is, no matter the infraction, parents take away the one thing that they know will affect their child -- their phone. In this podcast, Dr. Berney and Dr. Richard discuss why this is not an effective punishment and the possible unintended consequences.

  • The Worst Four Letter Word (TMB102)
One of my main professional and personal goals is to help people improve their lives and meet their goals. To meet our goals and improve our life, we need to make changes. Unfortunately, we often respond to the idea of change with a dangerous and limiting word -- Can't.
We tell ourselves that we can't change this part of our life, or that we can't accomplish this goal. And when we tell ourselves that we can't, we tend to use that as a rationale, an excuse, to stop or not even try. In this podcast, Dr. Berney talks about what we may really mean when we say we "can't" do something and how to battle that obstacle to change.

  • Why Won’t My ADHD Child Sleep? (TMB101)
Recently, a listener wrote in and asked:
My son is 11 years old and is diagnosed and treated for ADHD. While he did very well in elementary school, now that he is in middle school, he is having a hard time getting to sleep. We will make him go to bed at his usual time of 9:00, but he will still be awake at 11 or even midnight sometimes. What could be causing this problem?
In this podcast, Dr. Berney responds to this listener question and talks about some of the reasons why children may have difficulty sleeping.

    Delayed Gratification
    Self-Sufficiency
    Initiative
    Self-Regulation
    The Value of Quiet
    Perseverance
    Acceptance of Mistakes
In this podcast, Dr. Berney and Dr. Richard review these 10 critical aspects of raising emotionally healthy children who will develop into happy, independent adults.

  • Sugar Sugar (TMB99)
Sugar has become a major component of our daily diet. Research suggests that children and adolescents consume - on average - 80 grams of added sugar per day! The American Heart Association recently published a scientific statement regarding the risk for cardiovascular disease in children who consume added sugar.
In this podcast, Dr. Berney reviews the AHD statement and discusses the importance of decreasing our children's sugar intake.

In this podcast, Dr. Berney discusses strategies for managing situations where our children want to do things that we may not be completely comfortable with.
