In this episode I interview Jim Crompton, oil and gas industry expert, professor at the Colorado School of Mines, and owner Reflections Data Consulting, LLC. He is also an instructor at Top Energy Training which helps educate regulators, inspectors, policymakers, and oil & gas industry professionals so that they can develop informed public policy and regulations around complex issues in the oil and gas industry, like orphan wells.
We discuss all aspects of the orphan wells issue, from the size of the problem, advancements in technology that may help industry better prioritize the abandoned wells that require attention, what landowners should do if they find an abandoned well on their property, and incentive mechanisms that might help solve this problem.

Orphan wells are oil and gas wells that are no longer producing or economically viable but have not gone through the plugging process and usually don't have an owner. They present potential safety and environmental concerns as well as an enormous cost to properly plug and abandon the hundreds of thousands of wells in the United States. In this episode, we discuss some possible solutions to this problem and what surface owners can do if you have an orphan well on your property.

The U.S. becoming the largest LNG exporter in 2021 with a peak capacity of 10.8 Bcf/day, provides a new outlet for domestic natural gas production. This should provide support to natural gas prices in the U.S. and as a result will benefit royalty owners.
In this episode, we discuss this and the recent letter from New England senators asking the DOE to limit LNG exports to prevent gas prices from rising further. Instead, we talk about how supply and demand will help naturally balance out prices and how LNG exports can be used to support our allies in Europe from Russian natural gas supply disruptions.

In this episode, I talk with Jacinda Brown, co-founder of CryptoKnight Energy about bitcoin mining using stranded or flared natural gas and how this presents an opportunity for mineral and royalty owners.
We talk about some really interesting topics, including recent regulations that prevents the routine flaring of natural gas, the locations that are suitable for bitcoin mining, the types of agreements between bitcoin miners and oil and gas operators, the details around mining bitcoin at the well site, and how she sees this nascent industry developing.

In this month's Mineral Rights News Episode for February 2022, we discuss how mining the minerals required for the green energy revolution is putting a tribe in a tough spot, Colorado releases first annual report of State's Oil, Natural Gas Emissions (hint: they aren't the biggest emitters), and a new crowd-funding model for investing in oil and natural gas.

You may be wondering how the current economic trends like high inflation might affect oil prices over the next couple of years. If we could look through the crystal ball to figure out what commodity prices will do it would certainly help us have a better understanding of the value of our producing royalties.
We hear a lot about high inflation and oil prices in the news lately as the economic recovery seems to have gotten away from the Federal Reserve and their lagging monetary policy. One thing is clear, interest rates are going to rise but if you're like me you may be wondering how this is going to affect our mineral rights and royalties? And, more importantly, you may be wondering if there are ways to protect your hard earned savings against the damaging effects of inflation?
To break this down, we took a look at a few of the economic measures and how commodities like crude oil were correlated to things like the relative strength of the US Dollar and inflation to see what these factors might due to future oil and gas prices. Plus, we talk about a technology innovation that may help our royalty checks and act as a long term store of value in the process.

Seismic exploration is the process of using seismic energy to probe below the surface of the earth to search for oil and gas. The agreements that grant a company access to land in order to shoot seismic is called a seismic survey agreement. While seismic exploration was the primary method for finding oil and gas deposits in the past, it is still used in unconventional resource plays to identify and avoid faults and fractures which can cause issues during drilling or completions. Listen to learn more about what you need to know before signing a seismic exploration agreement.
