The Opperman Report'

Clive Doyle : Journey to Waco: Autobiography of a Branch Davidian
Nearly twenty years after they happened, the ATF and FBI assaults on the Branch Davidian residence near Waco, Texas remain the most deadly law enforcement action on American soil. The raid by Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms agents on February 28, 1993, which resulted in the deaths of four ATF agents and six Branch Davidians, precipitated a 51-day siege conducted by the FBI. The FBI tank and gas assault on the residence at Mount Carmel Center on April 19 culminated in a fire that killed 53 adults and 23 children, with only nine survivors.

The basis of the celebrated Paramount Network miniseries starring Michael Shannon and Taylor Kitsch--Waco is the critically-acclaimed, first person account of the siege by Branch Davidian survivor, David Thibodeau.

Twenty-five years ago, the FBI staged a deadly raid on the Branch Davidian compound in Waco. Texas. David Thibodeau survived to tell the story.

When he first met the man who called himself David Koresh, David Thibodeau was a drummer in a local a rock band. Though he had never been religious in the slightest, Thibodeau gradually became a follower and moved to the Branch Davidian compound in Waco. He remained there until April 19, 1993, when the compound was stormed and burned to the ground after a 51-day standoff with government authorities.

In this compelling account--now with an updated epilogue that revisits remaining survivors--Thibodeau explores why so many people came to believe that Koresh was divinely inspired. We meet the men, women, and children of Mt. Carmel. We get inside the day-to-day life of the community. We also understand Thibodeau's brutally honest assessment of the United States government's actions. The result is a memoir that reads like a thriller, with each page taking us closer to the eventual inferno.

If you were a vibrant, accomplished college senior who mysteriously disappeared, would your family trust that the police would launch a full-scale investigation? On November 1, 2002, Steve, Jan, and Sara Jenkins discovered that their son and brother, Chris, had not been seen since the previous night. They also learned that the Minneapolis police would not initiate a search until seventy-two hours had passed because Chris was over eighteen years old.

With exceptional candor and shocking detail, Chris's mother Jan wrote Footprints of Courage - the first look inside the tragic and untold saga of the Chris Jenkins murder investigation undertaken by the family who loved him. Chris's parents and sister took extraordinary measures to force the truth into the light, including securing the assistance of global leaders in water rescue and recovery, appearing dozens of times on local and national newscasts describing how Chris may have died, even analyzing autopsy and recovery photos for clues - the list of steps they were forced to take on their own initiative is endless.

Chris's disappearance captivated a city, and then a nation, when the public learned that dozens of young men in the preceding twelve years had met a similar fate. While pushing to unravel the mystery of his murder, Chris's courageous family paved the way for federal involvement in the possible serial homicides of more than seventy victims.

Never leaving one of their own behind may not have been the easy path; but for Steve, Jan, and Sara, it was the only path. The Jenkinses passionately hope that Chris's legacy and their struggle for justice will inspire others to trust their instincts and stand up for truth.

Dave McGowan: Moon Landing Hoax Wagging the Moondoggie
Ed Opperman interviews Dave McGowan about his theory on the Apollo space program and moon landing hoax Wagging the Moondoggie. Dave and I both really enjoyed these interviews. We shared many interests and usually came to the same conclusions on controversial topics. May he rest in peace.

Guest: Dave McGowan, author of "Programmed To Kill," "Weird Scenes Inside the Canyon," and many more.

David McGowan was born and raised in the suburbs of Los Angeles, California, where he still resides. After graduating from UCLA in 1983 with an unused degree in psychology, he went to work in construction and now works as a general contractor. He is the proud father of three daughters and is a lifelong music fan.

As a native Angeleno who was born in 1960 and came of age in the 1970s, the music produced by the artists who populate this book provided the soundtrack to my youth, so it is a subject matter that is close to my heart. But what really set the hook was discovering, early on in my research, that there were a number of aspects of the Laurel Canyon scene that didn't really seem to fit in with the prevailing image of a hippie utopia that was ostensibly all about peace and love.

Having grown up right alongside this scene, I was shocked to learn that I didn't even know that it had existed at all! And after asking around, I discovered that no one else that I know in this city did either. After the passage of nearly 50 years, it seemed that this was a story that was long overdue for greater exposure. Even more overdue, it seemed to me, was an expose of some of the hidden truths of Laurel Canyon.
Though a few books exploring the scene have popped up over the last several years, all of them have a certain sameness to them, with the same stories told in much the same way. I felt it was time to tell a different version of the story - the one that can be found hiding in the details that are usually left out.

T.A. Powell: Lords of the Harvest: A True Crime Investigative Memoir
Dear Reader,
While it is not my intention to begin this book with a riddle for levity’s sake, it is my intention to ask you to use your intellect from page one. You see, some murders are prompted by basic emotions that render a killer’s motivation most obvious. Other murders are committed out of a need to serve a higher purpose, such as personal or ideological loyalty, and/or religious martyrdom. But the Columbus Stocking Strangler murders will never rise to the elegance of such, no matter how much the perpetrators of these atrocities might insist. These graphic slayings of seven elderly white women were executed for a series of reasons that for over almost four decades have gone undecipherable and in the end, were simply part of a much larger puzzle that until now has remained hidden. So let us continue with the riddle…
What is another word for Thesaurus? Thought provoking, isn’t it?
For how do you describe something that in essence exists only to describe everything else, but not itself? I think you would agree with me then, that sometimes there simply isn’t a better word or group of words to describe a thing other than the words that originally describes it the best. Thus, you have the reason why the title for this book could be nothing other than: LORDS OF THE HARVEST: A TRUE CRIME INVESTIGATIVE MEMOIR.
This investigative memoir begins with my introduction to the murders in Columbus, Georgia in 1977, where the word harvest took on another meaning and the tools that were used to harvest these ‘matured’ victims will not only shock you—but lead you to other horrors, once shrouded in mystery and considered as stand-alone or disconnected serial murders… until my discovery of the key that unlocks them all.
