Jesse P. Pollack: The Acid King ( Ricky Kasso )

Real stories. Real teens. Real consequences.

A murder in a small Long Island town reveals the dark secrets lurking behind the seemingly peaceful façade in this latest installment of the Simon True series.

On June 19, 1984, seventeen-year-old Ricky Kasso murdered Gary Lauwers in what local police and the international press dubbed a “Satanic Sacrifice.”

The murder became the subject of several popular songs, and television specials addressed the issue of whether or not America’s teens were practicing Satanism. Even Congress got in on the act, debating Satanic symbolism in songs by performers like AC/DC and Ozzy Osbourne. “The country is in crisis!” screamed the pundits. After all, it was the height of the Reagan era and Nancy Reagan’s “just say no” campaign was everywhere. But what this case revealed were bigger problems lurking at the heart of suburban America.

Ricky Kasso wasn’t a bad kid, but he was lost. To feel better, he started smoking pot, moving on from that to PCP and LSD. He ended up living on the streets and thinking he had nothing to lose. Gary Lauwers went from being a victim of bullying to using drugs to fit in, and finally robbery—but then he made the mistake of stealing from Ricky, and from that moment on, his fate was sealed.

A few months later, Gary went into the woods behind the park with Ricky and two other boys. Only three of them came out.

The subsequent police investigation and accompanying media circus turned the village upside down. It shattered the image of an idyllic small town, changed the way neighbors viewed each other, and recast the War on Drugs.

REWARD $25,000 for information leading to the arrest of the person responsible for the disappearance of Aundria M Bowman aka Alexis Badger.
Last seen by "grandfathered in sexual offender/predator," Dennis Lee Bowman aka Denny, of Hamilton, MI.
November 1988, 14 y.o. Aundria/Alexis reported Bowman had sexually molested her. A brief investigation was done, but Bowman's background wasn't looked into and Aundria/Alexis was sent back.
March 11, 1989 Bowman a habitual liar, and still on parole for "criminal sexual conduct with intent to rape a teenage girl by gunpoint," reported to police Aundria had "stolen his money and run away!" For 20 years Bowman was listed as a victim missing endangered, 14 years old Aundria/Alexis'.
In 1999 the dead body of a Jane Doe was found in Racine,WI. and in 2008 Carl Koppelman reported to Racine WI. detective that "RJD" might be missing/endangered Aundria M Bowman.
The detective from WI. contacted the Allegan Co. Sheriff's department to report the tip. A detective from Allegan Co. set out to learn who Aundria M Bowman was in hopes of identifying, "Racine Jane Doe." In 2014 my DNA ruled out "RJD" as Aundria M Bowman aka Alexis Badger. Then the detective's primary question became "What really happened to Aundria???" The detective knew Bowman from the 80's and 90's and knew what he was capable of doing to a helpless teenage girl. He also knew Bowman a judge had said Bowman was a "threat to women if not locked up."
Police changed the status Aundria/Alexis' case to an "open criminal investigation" and offered Bowman the opportunity to clear himself of causing the disappearance of his adopted teenage daughter, but he refuses. Brenda Bowman isn't cooperating either but has said, "the only thing I'm guilty of is staying married to Dennis Bowman."
Aundria/Alexis was never seen in Holland, MI. in the weeks/months after she vanished. She never ran away from a youth center as per Doe Network and she never stole Dennis Bowman's money and ran away.

  • Carl Koppleman
    Carl Koppelman draws dead people.
Specifically, Koppleman, a 53-year-old who lives near LA, makes reconstructions based on post-mortem photos of unidentified bodies, in the hopes that a drawing of a person’s face that’s closer to how they appeared in life will assist in identifying them, sometimes decades after their death.
“Everybody likes a good mystery,” Koppelman says. “I’ve been kind of always been intrigued by mysteries. Unsolved mysteries and crime stories and that sort of thing.”
He has plenty of material to work with. There are nearly 11,000 unidentified bodies listed in the National Missing and Unidentified Persons database (known as “NamUs”), which represents just a quarter of the estimated 40,000 unidentified bodies believed to be on record at medical examiner and coroners’ offices across the country. For many of these bodies, only a few biographical details are available for identification; some were found years after death, which can make determining an age, year of death, or even gender impossible, let alone provide an image for the person’s relatives or loved ones to identify—if the person has relatives or loved ones looking for them in the first place.
The “lucky” bodies are found close enough to time of death and in good enough condition that a reconstruction of their face can be created and released to the public. The problem is, sometimes those reconstructions just aren’t very good. Resources are scant and some of these cases are decades old, with only the crudest of sketches, drawn by a clearly untrained hand, to go by. Sometimes, if enough time has gone by without an identification and the post-mortem photo isn’t too graphic, law enforcement will release those photos as well.
Koppelman came across one of those photos in 2009. It was a man who was found in an abandoned Philadelphia hotel in 2006, having bled to death from a cut on his foot.
“I looked at the post-mortem photo and I looked at the sketch and I said, ‘Hey, this doesn’t even look like the same person to me,'” Koppelman says.
Koppelman is an accountant by trade but had recently been laid off and was taking care of his ill mother in 2009. He’d become interested in amateur crime-solving websites around this time (he’s a moderator at WebSleuths, one of the largest of such communities), specifically the forums that try to match unidentified bodies to missing persons, not without some success. It’s easier than ever to do this with the internet, and publicly accessible databases that list both missing persons and unidentified people, like NamUs, have helped them give names to bodies found decades ago.
