  • George Christie : OUTLAW CHRONICLES: HELLS ANGELS
    George Christie Jr.
George Christie Jr. was born in 1947 in Ventura, California to a family of Greek immigrants and grew up an only child. From an early age, he was fascinated by motorcycles and outlaw culture, and by the time he started school his intelligence and rebellious attitude set him apart from his peers. As a teenager, he became an avid surfer. When one of his surfing buddies showed up at the beach one day on a Harley-Davidson, George knew what he had to do. In 1966, despite the objections of his father, he bought his first bike–a 1957 Panhead–for $200. He was soon hanging around with Ventura outlaw bike club The Question Marks and famous motorcycle customizers Von Dutch and Dick Woods.

As George puts it, “some people run away and join the circus. I ran away and joined the Hells Angels.” He became a full-patch Hells Angel in the Los Angeles charter in 1976 and, six months later, became its president, before founding the Ventura charter in 1978. As Ventura leader, George became one of the most powerful voices in the national Hells Angels organization, and spent three decades battling the law, rival gangs and members of his own club, while building the club’s business operations.

He famously carried the Olympic torch in the 1984 Los Angeles Games and spent a year in solitary confinement in prison on numerous charges in 2001. In 2011, Christie resigned his presidency of the Ventura charter and left the club. He was immediately excommunicated by his former brothers. George spent another 18 months in prison from 2013-2014 for conspiring to firebomb two Ventura tattoo shops.

George currently serves as a consultant on organized crime for CNN. He lives with his wife and son in Southern California and has three adult children.

    He has no regrets.

His business, Felony Prison Consultants (www.felonyprisonconsultants.com), where his expertise is called upon by high-profile and every day people who are faced with incarceration.

  • Leslie James Pickering : Mad Bomber Melville
A white, working-class revolutionary, Sam Melville’s guerrilla bombings set in motion a flood of armed radical actions across the United States in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Once imprisoned, Melville became a key organizer and a crucial element of the notorious Attica prison riots, uniting prisoners across racial barriers and making the ultimate sacrifice for revolutionary change. Tracing his short life and rapid political development, this book highlights a much-needed example of an undying and uncompromising struggle for justice and liberation.

  • Margaret Randall: Che on My Mind
Che on My Mind is an impressionistic look at the life, death, and legacy of Che Guevara by the renowned feminist poet and activist Margaret Randall. Recalling an era and this figure, she writes, "I am old enough to remember the world in which [Che] lived. I was part of that world, and it remains a part of me." Randall participated in the Mexican student movement of 1968 and eventually was forced to leave the country. She arrived in Cuba in 1969, less than two years after Che's death, and lived there until 1980. She became friends with several of Che's family members, friends, and compatriots. In Che on My Mind she reflects on his relationships with his family and fellow insurgents, including Fidel Castro. She is deeply admiring of Che's integrity and charisma and frank about what she sees as his strategic errors. Randall concludes by reflecting on the inspiration and lessons that Che's struggles might offer early twenty-first-century social justice activists and freedom fighters.

    About The Author(s)

Margaret Randall, born in New York in 1936, is a feminist poet, writer, photographer, and social activist. After living in Mexico, Cuba, and Nicaragua since the 1960s, she attempted to return to the United States in 1984. Randall had inadvertently lost her U.S. citizenship when she acquired the citizenship of her Mexican husband in 1967. The U.S. government refused to reinstate her citizenship after finding opinions expressed in some of her books to be "against the good order and happiness of the United States." The Center for Constitutional Rights defended Randall, and many writers and others joined in an almost five-year battle for reinstatement of her citizenship. She won her case in 1989. In 1990 she was awarded the Lillian Hellman and Dashiell Hammett grant for writers victimized by political repression. Randall is the author of more than eighty books, including the oral histories Cuban Women Now, Sandino's Daughters, and When I Look into the Mirror and See You: Women, Terror, and Resistance. A documentary, The Unapologetic Life of Margaret Randall, was released in 2001. Randall lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

  • Irvin Muchnick: JUSTICE DENIED: The Untold Story of Nancy Argentino's Death in Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka's Motel Room
IRVIN MUCHNICK is author, most recently, of CONCUSSION INC: The End of Football As We Know It — his third book. He is a widely published journalist whose work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Sports Illustrated, People, and many other major magazines and newspapers. He has been interviewed on forums as diverse as Fox News’ O’Reilly Factor and National Public Radio’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross.

In 2007, Irv published WRESTLING BABYLON: Piledriving Tales of Drugs, Sex, Death, and Scandal – a collection of his writings on pro wrestling behind the scenes. Soon thereafter, the sensational double murder/suicide of World Wrestling Entertainment’s Chris Benoit brought WRESTLING BABYLON to the attention of Congressional investigators and led to the true-crime book CHRIS & NANCY: The True Story of the Benoit Murder-Suicide and Pro Wrestling’s Cocktail of Death, published in 2009. Irv’s books and blog writings moved to the center of scrutiny of WWE co-founder and former chief executive Linda McMahon’s unsuccessful 2010 U.S. Senate candidacy in Connecticut on the Republican ticket.

Over the last four years, Irv’s work has helped elevate the story of widespread traumatic brain injury and its consequences for National Football League players and other professional and amateur athletes. His reporting has identified Dr. Joseph Maroon – medical director of WWE, team neurosurgeon for the Pittsburgh Steelers, and a widely quoted NFL consultant – as being among the key figures in manipulating research that was slow to identify and take seriously evidence of chronic traumatic encephalopathy. In the process, the $10-billion-a-year pro football industry was protected and NFL-affiliated doctors profited. The newest developments, including the suicide of retired player and NFL Players Association leader Dave Duerson, and the bargaining impasse between the NFL and the NFLPA, have increased public interest not just in the science of head injuries but also in how it is marketed by America’s most popular sport, from the NFL level all the way down to the peewee leagues.

Irvin Muchnick, who was assistant director of the National Writers Union from 1994 to 1997 and later a copyright litigation consultant, also is lead respondent of the landmark 2010 Supreme Court case Reed Elsevier v. Muchnick. Publishers Weekly calls the case “the central rights dispute of the digital age.” He blogs about writers’ rights issues at http://freelancerights.blogspot.com.

Irv can be contacted at [email protected].
