  • OS 1347: We’re Back Outside…Pants Optional

Capt. Kirk was out doing some OSR, so Capt. Kevin and Jeff welcomed in Dave Edwards once again to sit in and drop some knowledge on everyone!

Lots of topics were covered, but for some reason, everybody kept coming back to dropping their pants for one reason or another.  Why, you ask?  Sometimes, it’s better not to ask.

    And in case you forgot…

    VOTE “YES” ON AMENDMENT 2!!!

Here’s a great article from Ducks Unlimited about the amendment, and why you should vote “yes”: https://www.ducks.org/newsroom/florida-du-yes-on-2

    • Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week from Dave Edwards: Use a thermal monocular for quicker blood trailing & recovery of deer. Used one last week on a bow kill…went right to the deer. Lots of options. Get what you pay for but range from $400- $4,000. He’s got a FLIR…more on the upper end. But the cheaper ones like AGM brand will get the job done!
    • Here’s your Ring Power CAT tip of the week: There are a ton of sheepshead and black drum from Palm Valley to south of St. Augustine. When you’re buying your bait you might want to mix in a cup of fiddlers!
    • Here’s your KirbyCo Builders, Inc cooking tip of the week from Producer Chris: We’ve been using the Ninja Woodfire Pro Connect Premium XL for all kinds of stuff since we got it. It grills, smokes, air crisps, bakes, roasts, broils and dehydrates. The XL will hold up to 10 steaks, a 10-lb brisket, or TWO 7-lb chickens! You can even get the app to control it from your phone. $450 on Amazon.  BONUS TIP: My wife found Kona Wood Pellets for the perfect smoky flavor, regardless of what we’re cooking. $40 for the variety pack on Amazon.

    • Fishing Forecast: Oh! What A Feeling!

After all the nasty weather we’ve had for weeks and weeks, Capt. Kevin and the crew are still celebrating the FANTASTIC weather that’s making for some great inshore fishing.  But how are things offshore…and will the trend of great weather continue?  Well, that’s why you listen to the Fishing Forecast, right?

    • OS 1346: Back In Business!

Jeff was still hanging out with the Brits this week to handle his Jaguars duties, so Capt. Kevin and Capt. Kirk welcomed in Capt. Leon Dana to talk fishing, the start of gun season in Georgia, and a long overdue rest from all the nasty storms, wind, rain, and damage…

The guys had a special treat when OS Hall of Famer Scotty “Bass” Brown checked in to drop some serious knowledge about bass; if you dig a large mouth, you don’t want to miss Scotty’s call.  They also had several people call in to ask about Amendment 2 – what it means and what the official Outdoors Show recommendation was regarding it.  Here it is:

      VOTE ‘YES’ ON 2.
      • Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week from Capt. Leon: He just bought the Badland Off-Road 3-Ton jack and loves it.  It’s small, compact with big tires, and it’s $320 at Harbor Freight.
      • Here’s your Ring Power CAT tip of the week: This is THE time of year to put a camera on an active scrape. It is so cool to see how deer act around a scrape this time of year. And it will give you a good a good indication of what bucks are around. One hint!! Hide your camera! Mature bucks will stop hitting a scrape if they feel invaded.
      • Here’s your KirbyCo Builders, Inc cooking tip of the week from Captain Kirk:

      • Fishing Forecast: So…Now What Do We Talk About?

Seems like it’s been forever since we weren’t talking about continual rain or hurricanes or bad conditions or something…lousy.  Well, just like the weather, times change!  So, on this episode, Capt. Kevin proudly brings to you: FISHING TALK!!!!!!

You’ll get the forecast, of course, and thankfully, there won’t be anything seriously nasty in it. Or will there???????

      • OS 1345: Can We Please FINALLY Dry Out?

Between Helene and Milton, everyone is about done with it…including the guys. Jeff checked in from London to talk with Kevin, Kirk and Capt. Ricky Poupore (who came in to fill the empty chair) about the Milton Mess as well as leftover cleanup from Helene.

But like everyone else, they didn’t want to just sit around and talk about storm stuff – you can bet there was a bunch of fishing and hunting talk, and Grandpa Jimmy called in with a story about his amazing elk hunt! And it’s worth the listen…isn’t every story from Grandpa Jimmy?

        • Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week: With all the downed trees obviously the chainsaw will get a lot of use. Make sure you have all the safety tools!
        • Here’s your Ring Power CAT tip of the week: Due to the hurricane Registration for our upcoming live remote opens this coming Monday! Join us on Saturday, November 9th 6am-Noon at Hagan Ace Hardware and Hagan Coastal Outfitters of Callahan.

        • OS 1344: Hurricane Helene Is Over, But…

As you can imagine, the fallout from Hurricane Helene was still on the top of everyone’s minds. The guys had some hunting property woes to deal with, but their concerns were with the widespread devastation experienced by people across the entire southeast. Again, if you have any way to help, please do…so many people need so much help!

Ed Malin and Chef Gordon checked in to talk about the massive support the First Coast supplied to Madison County, NC. The details of what they saw and experienced is not to be missed…you have to listen to believe it.

Of course the storm damage talk went hand-in-hand with hunting area prep, and Jeff, Kevin and Kirk couldn’t stress it enough: THINK SAFETY FIRST! Even if a stand looks safe and secure, don’t trust it…TEST IT. Check every weld, every strap, and check the tree itself for stability.

          • Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week: Keep the Unniweei Solar Portable Shower handy for emergencies when you need to shower but don’t have access to one! Jeff had no power, no running water in GA…and it 100% got the job done for him!
          • Here’s your Ring Power CAT tip of the week: Make sure you SAVE THE DATE for our upcoming LIVE remotes! Saturday, November 9th 6am-Noon at Hagan Ace Hardware and Hagan Coastal Outfitters of Callahan. Registration opens THIS coming Wednesday at www.hagancoastaloutfitters.com . • Here’s your KirbyCo Builders, Inc cooking tip of the week from Captain Kirk: His buddy Craig Arnold hooked him up with Food Saver Portion Pouch bags for smoked fish. Makes 2 bags at a time for his smoked Spanish Mackerel!

          • Fishing Forecast: Back After It

Now that Hurricane Helene has passed (please keep the thoughts, prayers and help coming for all those dealing with the damage and destruction), Capt. Kevin hopped on the line with Capt. Ricky, Capt. Leon and Capt. Cory to talk about the return of First Coast fishing. Listen in, because you’ll be able to pick up some nice little tips along the way!  You’ll also get the weather forecast…of course you don’t want to miss that.

          • OS 1343: The Outdoor Aftermath of Helene

They wanted to spend this episode talking about what’s happening in the water and what’s coming up in the woods.  Hurricane Helene had different plans, however. It was almost impossible to ignore what so many people are dealing with in the wake of the storm all the way from the Florida Gulf Coast into Kentucky.

Of course, those of us on the First Coast can be thankful we were spared the devastation…and have the good fortune to be able to pivot back to fishing!  There’s A LOT happening in the water, both good and bad.  Lots of mullet, but lots of ANGRY sharks.

            • Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week: Keep CorrosionX handy for keeping your electronics and equipment from rusting or corroding. About $16 at Atlantic Coast Marine or West Marine.
            • Here’s your Ring Power CAT tip of the week: Make sure you order crab traps from Wishard Wire Company! Stone crab season begins October 15. Traps can be placed in water 10 days prior on 10/5/24 but can’t be tended to until opening day.
            • Here’s your KirbyCo Builders, Inc cooking tip of the week from Mike and Fred: Mike says, “September to October is the best time to eat mullet. January-February not so much. Fall they are fat and full of roe, winter, the meat is white and a weird texture. Learned the hard way. Salt run is some of the best.” Fred agreed, and added, “I had mullet gizzards Monday night, kind of a pain to clean, taste like squid but 50 times better! When they’re full of roe they have no fat, have to get them when roe is just starting, will only be 1/2 inch long!”

            • Fishing Forecast: Hurricane Helene On The Horizon

With Hurricane Helene bearing down on the Sunshine State, Capt. Kevin kicked things off all by his lonesome in the studio.  But not to fear, Capt. Ricky soon checked in from where he was hunkered down to talk about what was, what is, and what will soon be when it comes to the storm.  Of course, the most important aspect of the conversation was how Helene was going to affect the fishing!

            • OS 1342: Sun, Scorpions, Safety and Shimano!

Thankfully, the rain FINALLY stopped, the sun returned, and the guys were able to get on the water and into the woods.  There was a lot to talk about, of course, but things really picked up with special in-studio guest Brian Dufek, Southeast Regional Manager of Shimano.  The fishing talk got in-depth and intense…especially when it came to discussing the troubling legislation on the horizon for East Coast fishing.

There was a lot of great stuff in this episode – 100% must-listen stuff!

              • Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week: During periods of high rainfall this can be an additional item in your quiver to help your fishing skills! The Instant Ocean Hydrometer measures salinity level…and only about $10 at the pet shop.
              • Here’s your Ring Power CAT tip of the week: This is the time of year to fish the jetties for redfish. You can use mullet or shrimp. But the preferred bait this time of year is quarter of a crab! Wilder fishing the jetties with Captain Leon Dana. Bait of choice was quarter crab!
              • Here’s your KirbyCo Builders, Inc cooking tip of the week from Captain Kirk: check our Facebook page for his Muffin Pan Lasagna recipe.
