  • Fishing Forecast: A Look Back…at 2024?

We know it’s not December. We know that Christmas is NOT, in fact, around the corner. And no, we are planning our 2025 resolutions.  But with hunting season on the horizon, Capt. Kevin took some time this week to reflect on 2024, the fishing year.  That theme and those memories dominated the episode…along with the forecast, of course.

  • OS 1341: Rainy Days, Good Books, Loud Music & Great Stories

Well, when it’s raining too much to fish, and the woods are too wet to get ready…you put together big plans for a huge show!

The guys were loaded for bear on this episode, welcoming in author Monte Burke to talk about some of his incredible books (see the links below to get your copies). Monte is a top-shelf storyteller, so this chat alone is worth the price of admission. But that wasn’t the only highlight: Paul Wane, leader of the band Duval County Line (check them out HERE on Spotify), checked in to talk about his second appearance at (Tr)Everbank Field for the Jaguars’ home opener.  He’s playing the Star Spangled Banner once again, but this time, he’s playing it on a VERY special guitar…he tells the guys all about it, and share the info about his great new non-profit organization for kids.

And if that wasn’t enough, the guys shared an unbelievable story about Adam Triay from All Aluminum Concepts and his HUGE creature lovingly named, “MyBuck”.  You do not want to miss this story!

    • Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week: Great books by Monte Burke! Excellent additions to the outdoorsman’s library!
      • Sowbelly: The Obsessive Quest for the World-Record Largemouth Bass is a great one!
      • Lords of the Fly: Madness, Obsession, and the Hunt for the World Record Tarpon is Jeff’s favorite!
      • Here’s your Ring Power CAT tip of the week: Even if it’s a big, goofy pair of sunglasses like Capt. Leon wears, make sure you have something in the boat to protect your eyes when you’re running in the rain!
      • Here’s your KirbyCo Builders, Inc cooking tip of the week from Jeff (who else would offer this one up?): It’s that time of year again…get yer pumpkin spice fix with coffees, creamers, and all kinds of fu-fu stuff!

      • Fishing Forecast: SOAKED.

Not much else to say, is there?  The rain continues, so the fishing doesn’t (for the most part).  However, there’s still a bunch to talk about…as you know when a bunch of captains get together.  Listen in to the stories and calls, and maybe – just maybe – you can find some hope in the upcoming forecast.

      • OS 1340: Rain, Rain…GO AWAY. PLEASE.

Capt. Chip Wingo joined the guys in the studio for this episode to talk about…you guessed it: THE WEATHER.  The rain is bad, it’s gonna be bad, and it’s gonna be bad for a while. Brave it at your own risk!

But don’t be afraid to listen…as is always the case, there was a lot of good talk about the woods, the water, and all the tasty stuff that comes out of the kitchen.

        • Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week from Captain Kirk: “Now’s the time to start making sure everything is tuned right! Good release is essential for smooth releases! I prefer the Little Goose with the buckle for a quiet attachment to my wrist. Tip: Mark the strap with a sharpie for a no guess to strapping it up!” Available at Strike-Zone Fishing Jacksonville approximately $80.
        • Here’s your Ring Power CAT tip of the week: Size does matter! Mullet run is in full swing. If you’re fishing for reds or trout you need small mullet, jacks and bullreds love those medium sized mullet and for tarpon and sharks go with the 6 inch plus mullet. They are all available around the inlets right now!
        • Here’s your KirbyCo Builders, Inc cooking tip of the week from Captain Kirk: Been eating alot of rice and really enjoyed this one….Publix $2.50 serves 2.

        • Fishing Forecast: It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year…NOT!

Capt. Kevin had a full house for the first time in a little while…probably because the weather has NOT been good for fishing at all!  Capt. Ricky and Capt. Cory echoed that point, but everybody acknowledged that September is traditionally not the best time of year on the water around the First Coast.  However, there were stories to be told, and you can bet everyone had some good ones to share on this episode.

The big question is this: will things improve over the next week?  You know the drill: listen in to find out!

        • OS 1339: The OS Shift Is Officially Underway

So Jeff was back in the studio with Capt. Kevin and Capt. Kirk, and you can tell what time of year it is by the way the conversation goes.  After months of nothing but fishing, the guys are starting to split their talk time between the water and the woods, and they hit on everything from bear to crossbows to getting ready for deer season…and they talked about some guy so desperate to drop a monster buck that he wound up in serious trouble with the law.

It’s been a bit of good news/bad news, too…especially when it comes to fishing.  Good news? It’s tarpon time once again.  The bad news? The water is so bad, it’s impossible to fish for those monsters!  Listen in to get the skinny on the situation from the guys.

Finally, a warning: DON’T turn Kevin loose on the laptop with plenty of time to do OSR, because he’ll come up with some doozies.  This episode is a perfect example, and you’ll NEVER look at a raccoon the same way again! LOL

          • Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week: Mechanix is THE brand if you’re looking for great work and hunting gloves. Get yours HERE!
          • Here’s your Ring Power CAT tip of the week: Make sure you get in the drawing for a CZ1012 S.A. 12 gauge. You can go to www.Standardfeedandseed.com Click on The Outdoors Show and you will see the raffle. Tickets are $20 and all proceeds go to Duval County 4H Foundation.
          • Here’s your KirbyCo Builders, Inc cooking tip of the week from Captain Kirk: New Golden Malted Waffle and Pancake Mix! Get it at Walmart.  Kirk says you’ll love it!

          • Fishing Forecast: It’s TARPON TIME!

It was Capt. Kevin and Capt. Ricky at the helm this week, and one look at the calendar is all it takes to see it’s tarpon time!  But the question is this: is the weather going to help you or hurt you when you’re trying land one of those monsters?  Tune in and find out…

          • OS 1338: Unsettling Weather and Log’s Hogs

With Jeff away in Georgia doing some OSR, this episode was in the capable hands of Capt. Kevin and Capt. Kirk.  They had quite a bit to talk about…especially about the weather, and how unsettled it has left the waters of the area.

Jeff did call in, along with a bunch of great callers, including Trina and Caroline, who shared some great info on the Young Life Triple Challenge.

The boys also announced their newest sponsor: Log’s Hogs!!! LOL

And remember these wise words from Capt. Kirk…”Take care of your meat”!

Yeah, things got a little sideways.

            • Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week: If you’re fishing inshore this weekend make sure you bring all the rods! Heavy rods for tarpon, medium rods for big jacks and light rods for reds!

            • Fishing Forecast: And Then There Were Three!

Well what do ya know!  Guess who decided to rejoin Capt. Kevin and Capt. Cory…Hollywood himself, Capt. Ricky!  So, with the gang all back in the studio, it was time to get down to the nitty gritty of August fishing on the First Coast.

Tune in to hear from the guys, along with Capt. Leon and Capt. Chip calling, and get that all-important forecast, too.

            • OS 1337: WHAT THE F?????

Now before you go getting all flipped out about that “F”, it’s nothing naughty – the guys were just talking about all kinds of “F” things: Fishing, Food, Football, and Fun!

WARNING: Nobody is quite sure what got into Capt. Kirk during this episode, but he was in RARE form.  It’s worth the listen just to check out how sideways he gets…

              • Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week from Captain Kevin: I know we all love our new cell phone trail cameras. But if you just want an inexpensive reliable trail camera, I use one from Xtellar. It’s a great camera, takes fantastic videos, and it’s under $80! Get one HERE on Amazon.

Thank you Cathy for sharing Ed’s story:

My friend,Ed Malin, gave me permission to share this beautiful story of how the name of his honey came to be. Ed is one of my fav peeps and his ranking just went up several bars…..such a great touching story..please read..and go buy some honey at Angies Subs Official Page written by Ed Malin….
Back in my teenage days I spent a lot of time at The Faver Household. Kevin Faver and I were pretty tight, and still are. Kevin’s older brother Keith and I are pretty tight now.

Mr. and Mrs. Faver treated me like one of their own. I was always welcome. And The Faver House had a really big pantry that always had lots of food in it. Much different than the pantry in our house.

When I would show up, Mrs. Faver would almost assume I was hungry, because I usually was. “Edward Honey, are you hungry” was usually one of the first things she would say to me. She spoke with a southern slow sweet kinda drawl, a Palm Valley drawl. I can still hear her voice. Nothing was more important to her than her kids, and I was kinda like one of them.

I started beekeeping the year Mrs. Faver passed, two years ago. So about the time I was searching for labels for my first jars of honey was around the time I went to her celebration of life service.

Sitting in Keith’s yard surrounded by friends and family that day I could hear Mrs. Faver’s voice saying “Edward Honey, are you hungry?” And I knew right then what I would name my honey.
