  • OS 1268: Saturday Story Time – Wild, Young and Dumb Edition

The guys took a break from the OS World Tour ’23 to come back to the studio for this episode, and they had plenty of stories – everything from yellow flies and alligators to surf fishing, old TerrorEyz artificial lures and everything in between – even water skiing!  But business really picked up when Jeff, Kevin, Kirk and Chris started spinnin’ yarns about the dumbest things they’d ever done in their youth.  And if those stories weren’t enough, there were plenty of callers to share some stories of their own!

    • Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week from Captain Kevin: If you have land, you take care of your own lawn or have to spray your pond you need a backpack sprayer. We’ve had this Chapin sprayer for years and it has been great… Only have had to replace the shoulder straps.
    • Here’s your Ring Power CAT tip of the week from our Show Producer Chris: Zep Instant Spill Absorber is great to keep on hand when you have an oil spill in the garage. Only $7 at Home Depot.
    • Here’s your Kirbyco Builders Inc. cooking tip of the week: Parker Farms stuffed peppers (we like to add corn too!)

      Ingredients

      1 Tbsp. olive oil
      1 large, yellow onion, diced
      1 lb. ground venison
      4 garlic cloves, minced
      1 tsp. salt
      1/2 tsp. pepper
      1 Tbsp. Italian seasoning
      2 Tbsp. red wine vinegar
2 cups cooked rice (I like long-grain, brown)
16 oz. tomato sauce (I used 2 (8 oz.) cans, you can also use a (15 oz.) can)
      8 bell peppers

      Instructions

      Preheat the oven to 375F.
Start by heating the olive oil over medium heat in a large skillet. Then, add the onion and saute for about 5-7 minutes, until lightly browned.
Then, add the ground venison and brown, this takes about 8 minutes. Add the garlic, salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning. Brown for an additional 3-4 minutes to give the spices a chance to release flavor.
Next, add the red wine vinegar and deglaze the pan. Then, stir in the rice and tomato sauce. Remove the filling from the heat.
Cut the tops off of the 8 peppers and remove the seeds. Place the peppers in a large baking dish (any size that fits all the peppers works), and stuff with the venison mixture.
Bake for 30 minutes, until the peppers are soft.
If desired, top with parmesan and fresh parsley.

    • OS 1267: LIVE at Atlantic Coast Marine w/ Dr. Quinton White

The 2023 Outdoors Show World Tour continued this week, with the band cranking out the hits at Atlantic Coast Marine!  Capt. Kevin, Capt. Kirk and Jeff had all kinds of great stuff to talk about and lots of great stories to tell, but it was Dr. Quinton White‘s time with the guys that was the really big story.

Whenever Dr. White visits the show, the guys ALWAYS have a bunch of questions for him.  This week, Dr. White addressed the sargassum seaweed explosion, right whales, water pollution, fish poisoning and more.  Bottom line: when Dr. White is on, it’s a guaranteed must-listen show…and this one is no different.

Jeff shared a great story about his OSR/vacation/birthday gift trip along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail – some great adult beverages and some great turkey hunting, too!

And we can’t talk about the show without talking about the amazing things happening at Atlantic Coast Marine – all kinds of huge giveaways, including FOUR outboards, a Motorguide trolling motor, a Stiffy hybrid push pole, $200 Strike Zone gift cards and more!

      • Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week: Captain Kirk got this as a gift from Captain Steve…The PicQuic Stubby is a miniature multi-tool that he keeps in the boat for tightening screws, hex key screws, etc. You can find it at Hagan Ace Hardware for $3.95
      • Here’s your Ring Power CAT tip of the week: Make plans to join us LIVE today on location at Atlantic Coast Marine!
      • Here’s your Kirbyco Builders Inc. cooking tip of the week: One of the recipes they served Jeff and crew at Bourbon Trail Outfitters was the famous Kentucky hot brown! Wow! https://www.foodandwine.com/recipes/kentucky-hot-brown

Capt. Kevin was back to share all the great stories from his extended family time off…especially since the fishing was so tough here over the past several days.  The struggle has been real, so everybody’s asking the question: will next week be better?  Listen in to find out…

      • OS 1266: Hunting (and more) with Rick Hall

With Kevin out of the studio to spend some time with family, Jeff and Capt. Kirk welcomed in Rick Hall, host of the Southern Game and Tackle podcast (learn more and subscribe HERE ) and board member with a non-profit organization called Project Savior Outdoors (learn more at https://www.projectsavioroutdoors.org/ ).  He shared some great info about that, and he also talked at length about his adventures in hunting public land all over the country.

Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week: Jeff is loving his new Huk Gear waterproof camo boots from Hagan Coastal Outfitters. Click HERE for hours and locations.

Here’s your Ring Power CAT tip of the week: Make plans to join us LIVE next Saturday on location at Atlantic Coast Marine!

Here’s your Kirbyco Builders Inc. cooking tip of the week from our Producer Chris – The Copper Chef Perfect Egg Maker. It’s one of those “As Seen On TV” products…that actually works! It consistently makes perfect hard- and soft-boiled eggs – up to 14 at a time – and was the secret behind the ultimate deviled eggs that Chris’ wife served up at Easter dinner (and the guys got to sample on this episode! Best place to find the contraption is eBay these days…

      • Fishing Forecast: Givin’ Mr. Weatherman The Business

With Capt. Kevin out doing the family thang, it was “That’s Me!” and “Hollywood” holding down the studio for this episode.  Well, in under two minutes, the boys set out to serve notice to the weatherman and the havoc he caused by feeding First Coast anglers some faulty info.  It could have been a great day, but…DADGUM IT!

But the $64,000 question is this: will this upcoming week’s forecast be any better?

      • OS 1265: First Coast Redfish…On Drugs?

The boys finally made it back to the studio, and they weren’t alone – Jeff’s old friend and birthday boy Ed was sitting in, along with Capt. Kevin’s son-in-law Aaron.

But that’s not all – writer and OS alum Bob McNally called in to talk about his latest bombshell story at saltwatersportsman.com: “Florida Redfish Have a Drug Problem”.  The title may sound a little funny, but this is no joke; Florida International University and the Bonefish & Tarpon Trust found over a dozen different pharmaceuticals including opioid pain killers, psychoactive drugs and cardiovascular medications in the redfish and bonefish population across the state of Florida…including the Jacksonville area.  Scary stuff.

The guys had someone call in to ask about getting rid of dollar weed, and boy, did that spark a lot of questions and a lot of potential solutions.  The ultimate answer, it seems, is in the form of Atrazine – effective, safe, and you can get it all over the place.  Click HERE to learn more about it.

With turkey season in full swing, Jeff had an interesting story about a Ghost Gobbler, which led to a chat about how strange turkeys can be.

Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week: Captain Kirk loves this chef sac knife roll bag!

It’s about time to have one of those days…you know those days when the weather’s right, when the water’s nice, when the people you’re fishing are so much fun to be around?  Well, today was that kind of day for Capt. Kevin and Capt. Scott.  Listen in to get the lowdown on how everything panned out, and more importantly, find out if the forecast is good enough to generate some more of those kind of days!

      • OS 1264: LIVE from Standard Feed and Seed

The guys were back in town, but they weren’t at the studio…they were live at Standard Feed and Seed in downtown Jacksonville (1236 Kings Rd) for their 77th Annual Extravaganza!  They had all kinds of great things going on, including a live play-by-play of Chicken Poop Bingo featuring this guy: Darius Clucker!

Oh…and they were treated like kings, too (check out those recliners!).

Of course, the guys talked about all the cool stuff happening at Standard Feed & Seed, but there was no way they couldn’t talk about the unbelievable finish to the Wahoo Shootout.  Big thanks to Paul Dozier who gave us all the details.  In Turkey World, it’s the first day of turkey season in Georgia today, and Kirk’s son is already on the board.  Congrats, Kyle!
Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week: Kevin uses this knee bag and says it works like a charm! HUNTERS SPECIALTIES Strut Shooting Stabilizing Foam Camo Knee Gun Rest with Adjustable Quick-Release Leg Strap for Turkey Hunting https://a.co/d/0CknjZ2

Here’s your Kirbyco Builders Inc. cooking tip of the week: The easiest and best Mac and cheese recipe ever!
             Ingredients:
        • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
        • 8 ounces elbow macaroni or cavatappi, preferably Italian
        • 3 cups heavy cream
        • 2 cups grated Gruyere, divided
        • 1 cup grated sharp white Cheddar, such as Cabot, divided
        • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
        • 2 tablespoons melted butter, plus extra for the dish
        • 1½ cups fine fresh white bread crumbs (5 slices, crusts removed, see note – we used crushed ritz crackers instead!)
        •      Twenty-four hours before you plan to serve the gratin, bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add 2 tablespoons salt and the macaroni and cook for exactly 4 minutes. Drain and set aside.
Meanwhile, in a medium (10-inch) bowl, combine the cream, nutmeg, 1 cup of the Gruyere, ½ cup of the Cheddar, 2 teaspoons salt, and 1 teaspoon pepper. When the pasta is done, stir it into the cream mixture, cover the bowl with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for a full 24 hours. The pasta will absorb the cream and expand.
When ready to cook, allow the mixture to sit at room temperature for about an hour. (You can also microwave it for 4 minutes.) Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
Butter a 2-quart gratin dish, transfer the mixture to the dish and spread it evenly. Combine the remaining 1 cup Gruyere and ½ cup Cheddar and sprinkle it evenly on top. Combine the bread crumbs and 2 tablespoons butter and sprinkle evenly on top. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, rotating halfway through, until golden brown and crusty. Serve hot.
Note: To make 1½ cups of fresh bread crumbs, remove and discard the crusts from 5 slices of white bread. Dice the remaining bread and put it in the bowl of a food processor fitted with the steel blade and process until you have fine crumbs.

        • Fishing Forecast – Big Wahoo and Bad Weather

Now before you go and get all upset, “bad” is a very subjective term; you may like the weather we’ve had all month, and you may want it to continue into April.  If that’s the case, enjoy!  If not, “bad” weather it is.

Anyway, Capt. Kevin, Capt. Scott and Capt. Ricky were all talking about the crazy finish to the Wahoo Shootout this year.  If you didn’t hear the story, listen in to find out!
