With Jeff off in London for his Jaguars duties, Capt. Kevin and Capt. Kirk were joined by Fishing Forecast co-host Capt. Scott “That’s Me!” Shank to talk about everything going on in the water. Yep, lots of fishing talk, to be sure, but since we’re smack dab in the middle of deer season, you know there’s some hunting talk in here too.
Fishing and hunting aside, this episode was a special one because the guys were joined by surprise guest Capt. Leon Dana who came with the long arm of the law! You MUST listen to Leon’s attempt to right the alleged wrongs of the friendly competition between himself and Capt. Scott. Will justice prevail? Listen in to find out…
Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week: Download the Marine Traffic App. It allows you to view shipping traffic all over the world. Cool for identifying type, destination, cargo etc… and it’s free! Provides valuable info while navigating near shore in limited visibility for vessels around you.
Here’s your Ring Power CAT tip of the week: Join us for our next LIVE show on November 5th at Hagan Ace Hardware and THE NEW Hagan Coastal Outfitters of Glen Saint Mary. You have until November 3rd at 11:59pm to register to win more than 200k in giveaways! (Must be present to win!)
Even if you’re not registered or are under 18… over 50 vendors will be on site with free swag and giveaways, coffee, free food and Smokey The Bear
If you missed last week’s episode, you definitely need to check listen to the showdown between Capt. Scott and Capt. Leon, who called in (as usual). Here’s the short version: because of some interesting circumstances, Capt. Leon and Capt. Scott were going on a dual charter, and Capt. Leon pushed for a bet with our Scotty.
In this episode, you’ll get the nitty gritty on how things went during the charter, and what happened in the aftermath. FUN STUFF!!!!
Oh, and there’s that forecast to talk about as well.
Two words: deer season. First day of gun in Georgia, and bow season’s in full swing, and the guys are feeling it. In fact, Jeff was the first one to get on the board with a great buck he put down this week. Get the story on that, all the discussion that springs from it, all kinds of tips and everything else you can expect when the fever hits.
And if you’re more of an angler, don’t worry – there’s plenty of fishing stuff in this episode for you as well. Fresh water, surf, offshore…and we even got a report from Jeff’s son Dylan, who was checking out Lake James in North Carolina to do some bass fishing!
Finally, you CANNOT MISS the story involving Capt. Scott Shank, Capt. Leon Dana, a $100 bet, and a mobile phone mishap that secured proof that one of them can really show themselves…
Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week from Captain Kirk: I use a bungy cord to pin my rods against the console to keep them out of the way on my T top. Folks fighting fish will hang the line with their clothes and break the rod tips if I don’t push them in.
Here’s your Ring Power CAT tip of the week: There are a ton of juvenile fish in our backwaters this time of year. Small reds, trout and drum. Also flounder are closed. They are all a blast to catch but have to be released. To make it easier take a pair of pliers and smash down the barb on your hooks.
Here’s your Kirbyco Builders Inc. cooking tip of the week from Jeff: He says don’t knock it until you’ve tried it… but this Silk dairy-free Pumpkin Spice almond creamer is amazing! It’s only out for a limited time and it’s so good it’s often out of stock!
Hey hey! The whole gang was back in action for this episode! That’s right – Capt. Kevin, Capt. Scott and “Hollywood” (Capt. Ricky) were all in-studio, and they were all talking about the wind, the waves, and how it isn’t the best for those “veteran” ( i.e. old) charter captains who have to battle the elements this time of year.
The question is this, as it the same every week: will conditions change or stay the same? Listen in to find out…
The guys took the show on the road this week for the Northeast Florida Fall Boat Show. They were sitting amongst a bunch of beautiful boats, talking about the awesome fishing that’s been happening since the water cooled off and cleared up. The big topic of conversation, however, was the proposed offshore speed limit aimed at saving whales; as you already know, the impact on First Coast fishing could be catastrophic. The guys sounded off about it, along with a collection of callers, too.
They also talked to Erin from the Boat Show and Kyle Rossin from Mang Clothing, who gave us all an up-close report on southwest Florida in the wake of Hurricane Ian.
Here’s your L.V. Hires gear tip of the week: This hunting season you must get rid of the old neck strap for your binoculars and get the harness strap. Your neck will thank you!

So this October has brought in the flood tides, and as the guys pointed out early, when the fish get the hint that the hunt is on, they quickly get to goin’ somewhere else and hunkering down so they don’t get hooked.
Not sure who leaked the news to them, but it would seem like they’ve packed their little fish bags and hit the road for a little while. But will they be back soon? Listen in to find out…
As a gift to the guys for their 25th Anniversary, Chris the producer wrote/recorded a new theme song for the show…this is “The Good Life”!
LYRICS:
VERSE 1
Every Saturday mornin’, long as I can remember, I get up at the break of dawn
Roll outta bed, grab a cup of coffee and turn my radio on
Ready to laugh a lot, learn somethin’ new and get away from it all
Before that list of honey-do’s comes callin’ and gets me up and gone
CHORUS 1
Talkin’ ‘bout the good life, don’t you know
Hookin’ them bull reds up, puttin’ whitetails down, and plantin’ them seeds to grow
Takin’ in the beauty from the heavens above to the earth and sea below
Talkin’ ‘bout the good life on The Outdoors Show
VERSE 2
In the woods or the water, each and every week, there’s always a tale to tell
Somethin’ crazy or silly or scary is happenin’…or somethin’ just didn’t go well
They got tricks and tips, hear ‘em smack their lips, while they try to keep it clean
Listen to one show and then you’ll know exactly what I mean
CHORUS 2
Talkin’ ‘bout the good life, don’t you know
Hookin’ them kingfish up, puttin’ osceolas down, and plantin’ them seeds to grow
Takin’ in the beauty from the heavens above to the earth and sea below
Talkin’ ‘bout the good life on The Outdoors Show
CHORUS 3
Talkin’ ‘bout the good life, the only one we know
And we’ll stand up tall to defend it all, ‘cause you can bet we’re ready to go!
Takin’ in the beauty from the heavens above to the earth and sea below
Talkin’ ‘bout the good life on The Outdoors Show
CHORUS 4
Talkin’ ‘bout the good life, don’t you know
Talkin’ ‘bout hookin’ ‘em up, puttin’ ‘em down, and plantin’ them seeds to grow
Takin’ in the beauty from the heavens above to the earth and sea below
Talkin’ ‘bout the good life on The Outdoors Show

It’s amazing to think about it, but the Outdoors Show has been a fixture on First Coast radio for 25 years! It was a fantastic trip down memory lane, courtesy of stories from all of the guys, as well as a bunch of callers, too!
But don’t think this show was 100% nostalgia – there was plenty to talk about concerning what’s going on in the outdoors now, so the guys most definitely talked it all up!
On a side note, Chris the producer recorded a new theme song for the show called “The Good Life”. You can hear it here during the episode, and we’ll also post it as a separate track so you can check it out, along with the lyrics.
Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week: This small hand sized charger can be used to start a car, boat, tractor, and has outlets to charge a phone or laptop! After what we went through and what happened in South Florida…. everyone should get one!
Here’s your Ring Power CAT tip of the week: Just a great time of year to move your trail cameras around to get pics of what bucks are around! No better place to put them than on a fresh scrape!
Here’s your Kirbyco Builders Inc. cooking tip of the week: If you’re looking for some healthier ways to cook the foods you love, go nuts – coconuts, to be precise! You can find coconut alternatives at all kinds of places, like Target, Trader Joe’s, and even online.
Although Hurricane/Tropical Storm Ian didn’t do as much damage to the First Coast as it could have, it still disrupted things enough last week for the boys to have to take the week off from the show. But they’re back this week, with all the fallout from the storm…and to share a very interesting forecast for the next seven days.
Obviously, Tropical Storm/Hurricane Ian was still on everybody’s mind…and when the weather’s that bad, there’s nothing going on in the outdoors. However, since the storm has moved on, it’s time to look forward to some great fishing and getting back to deer hunting!
