Yeah, it’s true that “Full Moon Fever” was a good Tom Petty record, but Capt. Kevin and Capt. Scott weren’t doing a review of the 5x Platinum 1989 album. The moon – the real moon – went full this week, and they were talking about it, because wow…the fishing sure was different because of it.
Find out what changed, how they handled it, and most importantly, how much things are going to change in the week ahead.
With Jeff out on OSR (and out with the ‘rona, unfortunately) in southwest Florida, and Capt. Kirk still under the weather, it was up to Capt. Kevin to handle this episode. But why do it alone when you can call in some reinforcements? They say, “the more, the merrier”, so enter the “A-Team”: Capt. Rich Gray and Capt. Leon Dana!
As you’d guess, the show was loaded with fishing talk from top to bottom, start to finish. And as you’d also guess, with Rich and Leon in the house, this show was loaded with fun, too.
Finally, for the record, everybody’s got a big smile on their face when they call these three the “A-Team”…because they know what the “A” stands for!

What do you get when you have perfect weather, lots of bait, and hungry fish? You’d think you’d catch your limit, right? Well, listen in to find out what Capt. Scott caught recently…it’s got to be some kind of record.
But, seriously, it’s a good time of year to be on the water, and the guys will give you the rundown, as well as prep you for the upcoming week.
With Capt. Kirk a bit under the weather, it was up to Capt. Kevin and Jeff to man the ship…but they had a couple tricks up their sleeves:
Trick #1: Capt. Brian LeSage and Kevin Pickett came in to talk about fishing and an amazing hunting trip to Argentina…that had A LOT of surprises. There were also several callers who weighed in with their own perspective on a trip south of the equator.
Trick #2: Capt. Kevin took us down memory lane with a great story about catching the ultimate tarpon with Mark Sosin, who passed away this week. RIP, Mark!
Trick #3: They even tapped on Producer “Snake Killer” Chris for his latest moccasin encounter…notch #8 on his snake belt!
Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week: When you’re out fishing and hook a sail always have a good pair of gloves! Listen in to find out what brands the guys suggest.
Here’s your Ring Power CAT tip of the week from Captain Leon! He has been in Steinhatchee all week scalloping. He sent us the GPS coordinates of where the best scalloping has been! Check our Facebook page to find them.

the skin
• Smoke the wings to internal temp of 180.

2oz bourbon and cook for 5 mins until it thickens
• Put the wings in a bowl, add in bourbon bacon sauce. mix it up good. Enjoy!!
Capt. Scott was out last week doing his annual celebrity fishing charter, but he’s back, and did he bring the GRUMPIES with him. Find out what’s got his shorts in knots this week, along with all the happenings on the First Coast.
Don’t miss the forecast, either, as July is shaping up to be…interesting.
So here’s something you don’t see (well, hear) this time of year: Capt. Kevin NOT fishing the Kingbuster! Why, you ask? Look no further than the weather report. GRRRRRRR. Mother Nature was an angry lady this week, and she let loose on everyone willing to dare the waves for the tournament. The guys talked about the heat, the storms and everything else this week…and as you would expect, had a whole lot of fun doing it.
On a much more serious and solemn note, everyone took some time to reflect on the passing Capt. Dennis Goldstein, a true icon of First Coast fishing. Rest in peace, brother.
Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week: Check out this high powered, 12” rechargeable fan from Hagan Ace Hardware! Here’s your Ring Power CAT tip of the week: There’s been a lot of sailfish caught this week near shore. When you see a sail come up behind your bait there’s a good chance he will knock it off with his bill. If need be… grab another rod and pitch a bait to him. Do not take the boat out of gear because the fish will then just swim right by you!
Here’s your Kirbyco Builders Inc. cooking tip of the week: Jeff’s Peel & Eats!!
Take one can of your favorite beer and a generous amount of Old Bay and bring to a raging boil in a pot with a tight lid. Add 1 pound of de-headed shrimp (that are at room temperature) close lid and stir or shake. Bring back to a boil then shake one last time and then strain. Add a little sprinkle of Old Bay to finish off. Peel and eat at it’s best!
On this episode, Capt. Kevin and Capt. Ricky were handling it all, as it was Capt. Scott’s turn to go big time! He was off on a big charter for a TV crew, and you won’t believe his luck…tune in to find out what they brought into the boat with the cameras rolling!
You may also want to check out everything else happening in First Coast waters, and how the summer sun and heat are looking for the upcoming week. Put on your sunscreen, slap on that big-brimmed bucket hat, drink plenty (of water), and get ready for that forecast!

When you’ve got something as cool as the Old School Kingfish Shootout happening, it kind of stays top-of-mind before, during and after. With that said, the boys spent a bunch of time recapping their experience in the Old School. Paul Dozier stopped in to get deep in the weeds, and we even heard from the Sam Spinks, winner of the Nimnicht $10,000 drawing…and what an incredible, must-listen kind of story!
But it wasn’t ALL Old School – Jeff shared a scary kayak fishing story…along with several great tips for anyone who uses a kayak. Kayak Mike then called in to double down on the tips Jeff shared, and provided a few of his own. 100% worth the listen for ANYBODY who wants to make it happen in a yak!
Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week from Captain Leon Dana: A trash can topper makes for a great 5-gallon bucket cover
Here’s your Ring Power CAT tip of the week: It’s HOT!
So this time of year, everybody has kings on the brain…including Capt. Kevin, Capt. Scott and Capt. Ricky. But this year, it’s kind of fun, because there’s some interesting talk to be had about some other species – sails, cudas and sharks, of course. Lots to deal with on our lines, and lots to chatter about in this episode.
The guys don’t only talk about the fish – they talk about the weather. Speaking of which, how’s that thermometer treating you? Find out if we get a break from the heat, or if you need to get set to sweat for another seven days…
It’s Old School Kingfish Tournament Day, so Capt. Kevin and Capt. Kirk hit the water to see if they could win it. With them on the water, Jeff called in some reinforcements – Capt. Chip Wingo and Chef Gordon!
As you would think, there was a ton of talk about the Old School, with updates coming from our guys, along with Dave Edwards and listeners, too. Founder Paul Dozier even checked in, as busy as he was, and he said 521 boats were entered! Amazing.
But it wasn’t all about the Old School – Jeff had a great story about an amazing find in one of his favorite shooting houses. Listen in to find out who decided to make a home out of it!

Here’s your Kirbyco Builders Inc. cooking tip of the week:
Chef Gordon’s Meatloaf
-3lbs ground meat(venison is best)
-3 slices white bread (no crust)
-2tbsp of Lawry’s garlic salt
-2tbsp of Lawry’s seasoned salt (red)
-1tbsp of black pepper
-1 cup of Progresso Italian bread crumbs
-1 cup of Cattleman’s Carolina Tangy Gold BBQ Sauce
-1/4 cup of beef base Better Than Bullion, or beef stock or broth.
Spread meat on a sheet pan. Add the bread to the beef base (stock or broth) then, add all the ingredients to the meat, as evenly as possible, except the Carolina Gold sauce. Mix ingredients into meat without squeezing the meat. Do not knead your meat!! (Like Jeff does) The intent is to not compact the meat or firm it up. Add Caroline Gold, mix gently, reserve a little to drizzle on top, and bake in 9″ x 13″ pan at 375° for 25 minutes. Important that the meat isn’t more than about 2.5″ thick or the outer portion will be dry and well done.
