So the kings are holding court along the First Coast these days, and Capt. Kevin, Capt. Scott and Capt. Ricky were all talking about it – from the amazing days to the not-so-great-where’s-the-bait days, too.
But the BIG question…will the kings hang around, and just how good will the king fishing continue to be? Listen in to find out if the forecast is going to help or hurt your chances of landing a big king of your own.
What’s better than a Grand Opening? A Grand RE-Opening! And that’s exactly what was going on at Atlantic Coast Marine. The guys couldn’t miss it, so it was there job to talk about everything happening there – all the great giveaways and fun you could handle!
Paul Dozier stopped in to talk about The Old School Kingfish Shootout, and the guys talked about all kinds of things…they even hit on beavers! Yeah, you gotta know how to handle a beaver.
Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week: Homemade fly fishing stripping basket…. It’s a collapsible leaf basket (Walmart) just add a section of old hose with sand and weight at the bottom. Listen in to find out how to put everything together!

Finally, the guys got to celebrate some better weather and some clear water this week! Capt. Scott talks about hitting the flounder, finding the reds, and more. Capt. Kevin and Capt. Ricky kicked in their own stories about what they were catching, and of course you can expect to hear from the usual suspects about what’s going on.
Is it going to get better, though? Well, that’s always the big question. Be sure to listen for the forecast to plan your next angling adventure.
With Jeff out of the studio doing family-oriented OSR, Capt. Kevin and Capt. Kirk scoured the globe to find the perfect host for this time of year. And who did they invite to the studio? First Coast five-star charter captain, angling legend, and all-around good guy Capt. Larry Miniard!
As you would guess, when you’ve three veteran charter captains/top-notch anglers/master storytellers, you’ve got LOTS of great fishing stories on this episode. Travis called in and mentioned the long history they’d all had, which led to some of the crazy things they’d seen and experienced over the years. The callers had their own experiences to share as well…SO MANY great tales on this one!
Strange things weren’t the only things they talked about. It didn’t take long to get into the multitude of sharks, increasing goliath grouper numbers and other changes in the fishery. And once they started talking about “interesting” behavior from weekend warrior recreational boaters, business really picked up.
One more thing: you’ll hear Capt. Kirk air his grievances in this episode. The question is this…do you think he sounds like a curmudgeon (or a ‘crudgemudgeon’, as Kirk called it)?
Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week: BODYARMOR drinks. Perfect for those long days on the water. They are full of potassium which keeps you from cramping up! Available at your local Circle K stores.
Here’s your Ring Power CAT tip of the week: Be prepared for any bait situation. No pogies!? Better have Sabiki rigs. Couple bucks at Strike-Zone Fishing Jacksonville
Here’s your Kirbyco Builders Inc. cooking tip of the week:
Captain Kirk’s Smoked Fish Dip (secret recipe!)
Like…really? Everywhere you go on the First Coast, anglers have been moaning and groaning this past week because the fishing’s been pretty rough. Hey – the guys get it, because they’ve been do a little groaning themselves.
BUT – Capt. Kevin went and mentioned what made all the difference: it was the “P” word. It’s the one your mama told you not to pray for, the one you don’t want to ever need and every old, wise fisherman ever told you had to have.
And no, it’s not persimmons, parsnips, pizza, polecats or THAT “p” word you don’t say in polite company (shame on you for thinking it, btw). It’s PATIENCE.
Fish Bites is so nice, the guys decided to do a live show there twice! You see, Fish Bites Trading Post in St. Augustine was at it again, running a great sale on awesome gear…and putting on more seminars to help First Coast anglers. Well, guess who’s doing a kingfish seminar? Our very own Capt. Kevin! So why not start the party early with OS Live?
As far as the show itself, there’s all kinds of great stuff to check out on this episode, no matter what your interest. The big topic: dates for snapper season have been released, and boy…do the guys have some perspective on that decision.
Oh…and don’t ask why Chris wound up singing Lionel Richie songs.
Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week: Captain Kirk says Bull Frog is THE BEST sunscreen, and Jeff and Capt. Kevin agree! You most likely won’t find it in stores anymore, but you can get it on Amazon.
Here’s your Ring Power CAT tip of the week: Join Captain Kevin at Fishbites Trading Post at 11am and 2pm today for a kingfish seminar!
Here’s your Kirbyco Builders Inc. cooking tip of the week: A staple… The Best Summer salad!
Seedless Watermelon
Balsamic glaze
Fresh mozzarella
Fresh basil
Combine all ingredients and enjoy!!!
So, you remember just how bad it was last week? Of course you do, because it absolutely stunk. However, just like Capt. Kevin and Capt. Scott, you also remember that the weather’s always bouncing back and getting better. Well, that proved to be the case yet again this week – it was BONKERS out there, and lots of people were catching lots of fish.
Listen in to get the updates, the stories and the forecast for next week!
In the wake some pretty nasty fishing weather, it didn’t take long for Kevin and Jeff to turn to Capt. Kirk for his stories about the OSR he conducted in South Florida. Lots of great stories, including some outstanding snook and mangrove fishing, about one great trip…definitely worth the listen.
It was an already great episode when business picked up in the third hour…Paul Dozier, the master of the Old School Kingfish Shootout, joined the boys in-studio for some laughs and to talk all things tournament. Lot of info, lots of fun, lots of laughs.
As Kevin says, “GREAT STUFF!”
Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week: If you’re looking for some great country music that’s all about the great outdoors, check out “The Bone Collector” releases on Spotify (where you can also subscribe to the Outdoor Show Podcast) and a bunch of other streaming platforms. We’ll be showcasing several of them on future show episodes if you need some samples.
Here’s your Ring Power CAT tip of the week: We’ll be back at Fish Bites next weekend! And Captain Kevin will be doing 2 kingfish seminars!
Here’s your Kirbyco Builders Inc. cooking tip of the week FROM KIRK: Fresh Market reduced fat Pimento Cheese. KIRK SAYS it’s “great stuff and good for snacking in the boat.” Jeff, Kevin, Chris and even guest Paul Dozier compared it to a cat turd on a cracker…you be the judge.
Well, Capt. Kevin, Capt. Scott and Capt. Ricky had decisions to make this past week – do we go, do we reschedule? Do we stay out or go in? Do we burn the gas or lick our wounds?
The biggest decision for them turned out to be the easiest…do they kick themselves for the week that was, or do they look forward with hope to the upcoming week’s weather? Find out what they do on this episode, and enjoy the stories while you’re doing it.
Boy, did Capt. Kirk pick the wrong week to step out of the studio! It was like Christmas for Capt. Kevin and Jeff, who enjoyed an incredible spread from Chef Gordon AND the expertise of Dave Edwards, who provided all kinds of insight into land management.
But it wasn’t all about the hunting side of things – Kevin told an AMAZING cobia story, and gave us some bad news for anglers concerning the coming week.
Finally, we can’t talk about this episode without mentioning the best part: TOP GUN RETURNS! It was great to hear from one of our favorite members of the OS Family.
Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week: Fishing offshore!? Bring some Fishbites Squid Flavor. Stays on hook for more than one fish!
Here’s your Ring Power CAT tip of the week: The wind is supposed to blow hard out of the SW this weekend. Might keep you from going offshore but the beach should be fine. With the water temperature around 77, bait everywhere, there should be some kingfish on the beach. Also don’t do what I (Captain Kevin) did this week and forget to put your downrigger on the boat. Last but not least.. There are still rays on the beach!!
