The boys were back in town this week! Jeff was back from vacation, Capt. Kevin was back from tournament madness, and Capt. Kirk was just back…and was great to have him back! With all the guys back in the saddle, there was a lot to talk about, and a lot people wanted to check in to say hello. Lots of good stories, lots of laughs, lots of fun…everything you’ve come to expect from the Outdoors Show.
Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week: The Adventure Medical Kits Sportsman Series First Aid Kit for boat, car, truck, tractor. It’s got everything you need for every kind of problem, including a great Wilderness & Travel Medicine Guide. Just $39.00 on Amazon.
Here’s your Ring Power CAT tip of the week: With the recent onshore winds the water clarity offshore is beautiful! But that can sometimes make fishing tough. Think about changing tackle. Go to lighter fluorocarbon, smaller hooks, even change the color of your hooks. Sometimes you have to think outside the tackle box!
Here’s your Kirbyco Builders Inc. cooking tip of the week: Hot Summer jalapeño Cream Cheese & Corn Dip. Jeff’s latest addiction!
Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Soften/melt the cream cheese and butter, then mix all ingredients in a bowl. Transfer to an oven-safe dish and bake 20-30 minutes until bubbling and browning on top.
This is the time of year when charter captains start to lose their marbles. Capt. Kevin and Capt. Scott have been runnin’ and gunnin’ for weeks and weeks now, and between all the charters and the tournaments (and all that Captain’s Choice Tackle fun), they hardly know what day it is anymore. So they started the show with a great announcement – to help cover everything, they’ve officially made Capt. Ricky a member of the Fishing Forecast team! You throw in the weekly calls from Capt. Leon and Capt. Chip, and you’ve got a whole new meaning behind the phrase “fishing party”!
In addition to that news, the guys talk about all things fishing over the past seven days, as well as the forecast for the upcoming week.
So, here’s what happened…Capt. Kevin was out fishing the Ancient City. Jeff was smack dab in the middle of family vacation (and doing a whole lot of OSR). Capt. Kirk was feeling a bit under the weather (praying for you, buddy!). So it was up to Moe’s Southwest Grill Fishing Forecast host Capt. Scott Shank and Producer Chris to bring the show home and talk about all the silliness happening – from Elsa to snapper season to all the tournaments going on. Thankfully, Jeff and Capt. Kevin checked in, Shimano’s Brian Dufek stopped by to spend some time in-studio, and the OS faithful chimed in to sort things out and have some fun.
Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week: Ben’s Wipes $12.95 This wet weather has hatched a ton of skeets, so this product is excellent to keep them at bay!
Here’s your Ring Power CAT tip of the week: Back to the mosquitoes…after you get bit (which you will), the After Bite itch pen is excellent for instant relief, and it was only $6.95.
Capt. Kevin said it best at the beginning of this episode when he proclaimed, “We’re gonna need more than an hour to talk about everything going on this week!” Truer words were never spoken…
Considering the fishing BEFORE the Elsa Effect, the multitude of tournaments going on this weekend, snapper season this weekend, and everything else…this episode could have been as long as the Outdoors Show. And Capt. Kevin and Capt. Scott STILL couldn’t have covered it all!
Happy Fourth of July! Happy Birthday, USA!!!!
Capt. Kirk was out of the office this week, doing some OSR during his vacation. So Capt. Kevin and Jeff held down the fort and talked about whatever came up. They were also joined by legendary South Florida charter captain Capt. Bouncer Smith, and Erin Johnson checked in to talk about the ACGFA Kingfish Challenge.
Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week: Captain Kirk doesn’t leave home without Sunbum Sunscreen. He really likes how well it works and how it’s not super-thick.
Here’s your Ring Power CAT tip of the week: This is the time of year land owners and hunters that lease land like to mow. But keep in mind there are lots of newborns around. Be careful of mowing overgrown fields and powerlines. You might want to keep your mowing to roads and the lawn for the next few weeks!
By special request, we are bringing this Kirbyco Builders Inc. cooking tip of the week back: Jeff’s Candied Pork Belly! Listen in to hear how he made it with the meat he bought at Costco.
Capt. Kevin, Capt. Scott, and Capt. Ricky got together in studio to chat it up for this episode, and they were pretty happy campers! It’s amazing how a charter captain’s mood can change when bait show up, right? Then, when you throw in the fact that the weather was actually cooperating, they got downright giggly! All in all the guys had lots of fun telling stories, and there was some pretty cool boat hull discussion thrown in for good measure. So, if you’re in the market, listen to this episode – you’ll be a great place to make an educated decision…before you realize you can’t find it.
Historic low tides? Maybe. But historic or not, everybody agreed the low tides were TERRIBLE. Dangerously bad. So what was the fallout? The guys talked all about the mess the tides caused, along with the silver lining they found in it all. Honestly, it wasn’t all bad, because inshore, as tough as it was, still yielded some really nice fish!
Capt. Dave checked in, and during the conversation, he mentioned a gadget called “The Knot Needle”. After some investigation, and another call-in recommendation from Chan, the guys decided they may just dig a little deeper for a potential future gear tip!
Attention turned to creek fishing late in the show, with several callers checking with their stories.
Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week: The Piscifun Waterproof Dry Bag for the outdoors is a must have for fishing/hunting! Here’s the link:

Here’s your Ring Power CAT tip of the week: With all of the onshore winds we’ve had the last few days it really has the bait and tarpon moving around. Even if you’re inshore fishing this weekend you might want to put a bigger reel on the boat!
Here’s your Kirbyco Builders Inc. cooking tip of the week: Summer Corn Addiction Dip
1 can shoepeg corn (drained)
1 can black beans (rinsed)
4 oz chopped feta
3-4 spring onions chopped
Dressing
1/3 cup olive oil
1/3 cup white balsamic vinegar
2-3 tbsp sugar
Mix all together!
Capt. Kevin and Capt. Scott sat down for this episode scratching their heads, as was the case for everyone fishing for the past few days. What was going on with the tides? Kevin mentioned a 9 ft swing (yes, 9 FEET), and Scott talked about parts of bridge supports he’s never seen before. But what’s the most important part about a big tide? Big current, which could cause you all kinds of trouble. Listen as the guys talk about it, how they did dealing with it, and some tips for you. Throw in the normal cast of characters and the forecast for the upcoming week, and you’re all set!
