It’s funny how conversations can drift from topic to topic, and it’s really funny when that happens with the Outdoors Show guys. It all started with Tropical Storm/Hurricane Henri (or “Henry”, according to Jeff) and then quickly shifted into memories about the movie “Jaws”. Then onto breakfast sandwiches, venison bacon…and here we go on the weekly rollercoaster we call The Outdoors Show.
It’s a great time of year for the guys, because there’s so much to talk about in terms of both fishing and hunting. So from in-shore and offshore fishing to gearing up for the hunting season, this show covers it.
Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week from Captain Kirk: The Luna Sea Cush-It Rod Butt Cushion. It’s designed to grip and bend into the body so it will protect the angler from force produced from fighting tough fish. The bulbous end absorbs the shock, isolating the rod butt from the angler, and it’s tapered on the interior to fit and grip any size rod butt. It’s UV resistant, saltwater resistant, lightweight and comfortable. The Cush-It is the ultimate alternative to bulky fighting belts.
Here’s your Ring Power CAT tip of the week: There are a lot of kinks on the local wrecks right now, but there are also a ton of big sharks. You have to get the fish to the boat as fast as possible. Set your drags a little tighter and don’t finesse the fish as you usually would. You might pull a few hooks but you up your odds by changing to these tactics!
Things were a little different in the St. Augustine Fishing Forecast studios, as Capt. Scott had to dial it in…he’s in quarantine! Thoughts and prayers going out to his wife, who is shrugging off the virus, and for Scotty, so he doesn’t get it. So with Scotty on the horn, it was up to Capt. Kevin and Capt. Ricky to talk about taking the heat…literally. Offshore, it’s been okay, but in-shore is basically like a four-hour trip to hell and back.
Listen in to find out if the cooking continues for us this coming week, and have a couple of laughs, too!
We had expected to see an empty chair this week, as Capt. Kevin was supposed to be up in Indiana for his annual golf getaway. Unfortunately for him (but good for us), travel complications put the kibosh on the trip so he was back in the studio with Capt. Kirk and Jeff. Kevin brought up the fact that it was the 3rd anniversary of the Greatest OS Story Ever Told – we kick things off with a partial re-telling…and we all laughed just as much as we have the past two years!
But old stories weren’t the only stories being told on this episode. Kevin talked about two big catches: a mule snapper with his buddy Travis and an amazing sailfish one of his charters caught this week. Kirk talked about a great charter he had with Birthday Boy Kevin, and all the guys told some mangrove snapper stories (passed along some tips, too).
Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week from Captain Kevin: When it comes to bowhunting, nothing beats the new and improved Whisker Biscuit V Arrow Rest from Trophy Ridge. He’s been using it now for about 2 months and really likes it!
Here’s your Ring Power CAT tip of the week from Captain Kirk: Get the SOL FireLite Fuel-Free Lighter on Amazon for $24.99. It never runs out…just needs to be recharged!
This isn’t exactly a news flash, but we’ll say it anyway: August is one nasty hot month. The captains aren’t immune to it either, as they talk about it being so hot. How it is it? It’s so hot that the fish are fried when you catch ’em. It’s so hot that Scott’s neighbor has a chicken that’s laying omelettes. It’s so hot the birds are using oven mitts to pull worms out of the ground. It’s that hot.
If you can say anything about Jeff, Kevin and Kirk, you’ve got to say they’ve got a VERY wide span of knowledge about all kinds of stuff outdoors. Well, they put that knowledge to work on this episode, covering everything from sharks to raccoons, from mousetraps to animals in oyster beds, from sick deer to hunting and fishing for all of it.
Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week: Captain Kirk loves the Sol Camp Hatchet does a whole lot more than just…hatchet stuff. Listen in to find out what it does! $34.99 on Amazon.
Here’s your Ring Power CAT tip of the week: Bow season opens in 5 weeks in Georgia! Make sure all your gear is in working order. Go see Rick Stinson at Strike-Zone Fishing Jacksonville and let him inspect your bow and get it tuned up!
Here’s your Kirbyco Builders Inc. cooking tip of the week: Mrs. Potter’s Chicken – a back to school favorite!
Two boned chix breast
Slice in one inch strips
Pound each strip in a zip lock bag flat
Crush one sleeve of ritz crackers in a big ziplock bag and add 1/4 cup of Parmesan Cheese ( grated)
Melt one stick of butter in a bowl
Dip the filet strips in the butter and toss in the ziplock bag of crushed crackers/ cheese
Place on cookie sheet and bake at 325 degrees for 35mins
Capt. Kevin and Capt. Ricky didn’t say it, but they sure were thinking what Capt. Scott had to say: “Damn the weather! It’s rough as hell, the water is chocolate milk, and there’s no bait.” And he’s right; offshore just has not been happening this week…at all.
Find out why it’s so bad, and more importantly, if it’s going to stay that way.
With August approaching, the guys started talking about getting ready for deer season. Yeah, it’s time to start planning…but there may be a little bit of dreaming about what lies beyond the misery of what is traditionally the hottest, nastiest, stormiest month of the year. Anyway, there was a lot of fishing talk, too, as you would expect. And food and music (RIP to ZZ Top’s Dusty Hill).
Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week! Kevin’s Dad’s new book, Echoes of Time: Memories of Learning and Teaching Life’s Lessons (The Palm Valley Series), is available now on Amazon! Order it here
Here’s your Ring Power CAT tip of the week: When the mosquitoes are out… bite back with Ben’s! You can find it at Strike-Zone Fishing Jacksonville.
Can you believe July is almost gone already? Can you believe we’re headed straight into the hellacious heat that is August? Well, hot or not, Capt. Kevin, Capt. Scott and Capt. Ricky were ready to roll and make the most of whatever Mother Nature was throwing at them. What will the next week bring for them and for you? Find out in this episode…and have a lot of fun, too.
Brian Dufek made a return visit to the studio for this episode, but this time around, he had a lot of insight into the week that was at ICAST, THE fishing gear trade show to end all trade shows. Brian works for Shimano, and he had lots of news about some great new Shimano products. If you’re looking for some reel upgrades, you don’t want to miss Brian’s rundown!
Brian wasn’t the only one at ICAST – it seems Jeff had a connection with Hagan Coastal Outfitters (wink-wink), so he was able to sneak in and get his first peak at the inner workings of the industry…and he also got to hang out with some industry superstars, like Mr. Bill Dance!
ICAST wasn’t the only item on the agenda, though. Brian also provided the guys a very interesting – and concerning – perspective on product manufacturing and supply…where it was, where it is, and how long before things get back to normal.
Here’s your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week: Add QuikClot Advanced Clotting Gauze to the first aid kit we discussed last weekend. Stops the bleeding in a real hurry.
And if that wasn’t enough, here’s a BONUS L.V. Hiers gear tip: Danco Sports and revealed their primo product at ICAST – the “Premio Al” pliers weigh 3.2 oz with 500 lbs of crimping force. They can be yours for just $699. Lifetime warranty comes with it!
Here’s your Ring Power CAT tip of the week: The winds this weekend are going to blow out of the Northeast! Anytime you get a Northeast wind this time of year it will have the bait moving around the inlets for just a couple of days. Look for tarpon, reds, jacks and sharks all to be feeding around the inlets this weekend!
Here’s your Kirbyco Builders Inc. cooking tip of the week: Watch the Olympics this weekend and support ‘local’ by ordering food from our favorites! Angie’s Subs Official Page, The Bearded Pig BBQ and Moe’s Southwest Grill!
Captains Kevin, Scott and Ricky took to the air this week with quite the good news: the First Coast had a good week of fishing!!!! Sure, it felt a little hot at times, and sure, the wind blew here and there. But the bait balls were big and the keepers were biting. Listen in to get all the details of the week that was, and get all the forecast details for the week that will be!
