Jon Kabat-Zinn, a physician and meditation teacher trained at MIT, has been putting mindfulness in a scientific context since 1979. He also founded the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction course at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center and has conducted dozens of studies to support the effectiveness of mindfulness.
