Dr. Emily Trunnell, PETA senior scientist, and Dr. Gina Hilton, PETA toxicologist say that a primary reason the U.S. has lost the war on cancer has been its slowness to adopt human-relevant research.  The PETA scientists talk to Emil Guillermo about the changes needed at NIH in order to find a cure for cancer.

  • Ep. 201: PETA Undercover Reveals Envigo Hell for Beagles

A PETA undercover investigator has uncovered a factory farm-like facility whose intent is to raise animals for food. But in Virginia, the intent is to breed hundreds upon hundreds of dogs for sale to animal experimenters.

  • Ep.200: On World AIDS Day, A PETA Scientist Remembers The Monkeys Who Have DIed in Futility

Dr. Lisa Jones-Engel, a former primate researcher now a PETA scientist, tells Emil Guillermo how a reliance on monkeys as scientific models has delayed the development of an effective HIV vaccine for people. After nearly 40 years, hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars and at least a million dead monkeys, humans around the globe are still waiting for an HIV vaccine that works. A better approach is to adopt modern science techniques like those outlined in PETA's Research Modernization Deal.

  • Ep. 199: PETA TO THE RESCUE IN "TIGER KING" Sequel

"Tiger King," Season 2 is out on Netflix. But there would be no story if it weren't for the lawsuits filed by PETA. Brittany Peet of PETA's Captured Animal Legal Enforcement division tells Emil Guillermo how lawsuits using the Endangered Species Act brought about aggressive enforcement from the feds. It's the reason more than 350 animals have been rescued, the exotic wildlife business has hit rock bottom, and Joe Exotic remains behind bars.

Peet updates us from her last appearance on the podcast in the summer.

And she tells us about what happened to the animals as Joe Exotic's operation was shutdown.

In conversation with Emil Guillermo, Newkirk talks about everything from caring, feeding, and making sure your cat stays indoors. (It's dangerous out there). Did you know cats "smile" by squinting their eyes? Or that in cold weather, cats love to hide under cars, under the hood? All that and more in the new book and on this podcast No. 197.

  • Ep: 196: Cosmetic Tests are back in Europe; Are Your Products Still Cruelty-Free?

Your cosmetics may no longer be cruelty-free, that's because the European Union's European Chemicals Agency is now requiring new tests--even if products and ingredients have been tested years ago and have been deemed safe.

Dr. Julia Baines, PETA UK Science Policy Manager speaks to Emil Guillermo about why this is happening and how you can join the effort to get 1 million signatures from EU residents, wherever they may be in the world.

  • Ep.195: Divided Country Finds Common Ground In Saving Animals at NIH

The news that the National Institutes of Health funded hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of experiments on dogs in a foreign country sparked outrage in U.S. media. The idea of wasteful spending on useless animal experiments has been the target of PETA for years. But now it's apparent that in the divided political environment of Washington, there's one issue that is truly bipartisan: Saving the Animals, and especially those at NIH.

PETA Sr. VP Kathy Guillermo talks about the Research Modernization Deal that could be a bipartisan answer to a cruel and ugly situation at NIH, where nearly $40 billion dollars goes to wasteful animal experiments every year.
