The Animal Rights discussion began when philosophers asked whether animals suffer. They do. But physical pain is one thing, do they feel emotions and grief? If a donkey does, does a spider? Author Barbara J. King, a professor emerita in Anthropology at William and Mary talks to Emil Guillermo about her research and how a knowledge of animal feelings could improve our empathy and compassion toward animals.

Texas A&M is refusing to let PETA adopt the 19 dogs leftover when the breeding operation for canine experiments on Muscular Dystrophy was ended in 2019. The college said the dogs were sick. They're not and are adoptable immediately. The breeding has ended but has the lab really closed? 19 dogs remain. Why won't the college let the dogs free? PETA's Kathy Guillermo explains the situation on the PETA Podcast.
Demand that Texas A&M shut down the lab and allow the 19 remaining dogs to be adopted.

Jim Mason, a co-author with philosopher Peter Singer on "Animal Factories," has come out with a new edition of his 1993 classic, "An Unnatural Order--Roots of Our Destruction of Nature." The book is a history of the evolution of mankind's treatment of animals and how the agrarian culture changed our relationship to animals. Instead of being among the animals, we were in control and had dominion of animals. It led to the enslavement of all those less powerful, and opened the door to applying those supremacist ideas to humans. According to Mason, it's the kind of thought that leads to racism, colonialism, and white supremacy. But it starts with our relationship to animals. Mason talks with Emil Guillermo about how to restore a kinship and a oneness with animals that could reverse the path of mankind in conflict with nature and the world.

The Research Modernization Deal, RMD, is a new deal for scientists and animals developed by the scientists at PETA. Intended to change the paradigm on the use of animals in experimentation, RMD is a common-sense strategy necessitated by the 90 percent failure rate of research involving animals to produce anything of value for humans. PETA's Dr.Emily Trunnell with the Laboratory Investigations Department is working with the team trying to make RMD a reality. She tells Emil Guillermo the program is a simple as stopping everything that doesn't work or produce real results, and shifting money and emphasis to non-animal experiments that would have a better chance at success. On the heels of an announcement from retailer Canada Goose, Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman have announced they will stop selling fur by 2023. The news is yet another historic victory for grassroots activists and PETA which have been fighting on behalf of the animals for decades. Dan Mathews was there at the very first "I'd rather go naked than wear fur" campaign, and talks about how the protest began, evolved and ultimately became victorious. Mathews talks about why it's all happening now; how celebrities were used; and how fashion houses, icons, and retailers ultimately gave in to the pressure and the times. Mathews also talks about protest, getting arrested, and spending time in jail. He also talks about the history of animal rights and how it's relatable to all minority groups, LGBTQ-Plus, Black, Indigenous, People of Color who find themselves on the margins fighting for justice. This show combines interviews from two PETA Podcasts, ep. 15, and ep. 92. They are a salute to Dan who has decided to leave his day-to-day post as a senior VP, but remain as a board member of PETA France. It's a thank you to Dan and all he's done for more than three decades at PETA.

After a multi-year campaign, PETA has announced a moratorium on Canada Goose protests after the outerwear retailer said it would no longer use fur. But what about the down feathers? That could be next, and the reason for the moratorium on protests--to see if Canada Goose can come to an ethical conclusion on its own. We reprise an interview from Dec. 2019 with Anne Brainard, PETA Sr. Director of Corporate Responsibility. You'll hear why PETA has led the fight for years against Canada Goose, which has fought PETA every step of the way. You'll hear how the fur trapping was done, and how the company tried to obscure the reality of the situation. So now Canada Goose says no to fur. Let's see how long before it dumps down and goes feather-free.

Brittany Peet, PETA Foundation Deputy General Counsel for Captive Animal Law Enforcement (CALE), talks with Emil Guillermo about the news since the "Tiger King" show premiered. And it all leads to what could be a permanent shutdown of big-cat petting zoos. For example, Tim Stark, a former business partner of Joe Exotic, was ordered to pay more than $733, 997.70 in court costs to PETA. That could effectively shut Stark down for good. Peet updates on Jeff Lowe and Joe Exotic and the animals seized from all of them.

At age 27, Chuck Carroll was so addicted to fast food he thought he wouldn't see age 30. He has since lost 300 pounds and kept it off with a vegan diet. In conversation with Emil Guillermo, Carroll talks about how he did it, and how it led to his hosting, "The Exam Room," the podcast of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM). Carroll talks about how he has become vegan and how veganism has led him to a new awareness for ethical eating.

For her birthday, Ingrid Newkirk is...what else? Saving animals. The president and co-founder of PETA talks about PETA's efforts globally to save as many animals as it can, from India and Asia, to Romania in Europe, to Petra in the Middle East, and back to Norfolk, Va., PETA headquarters. Newkirk tells Emil Guillermo about how efforts in India were impacted by Covid. She talks about why she does what she does, and shares with listeners her favorite obsession, books, and birthday meal.

The Washington National Primate Research Center in Seattle has been moving sick monkeys around this country for use in labs, according to documents obtained by PETA through an open records law request. Dr.Lisa Jones Engel, a former WaNPRC employee, now PETA's senior scientific advisor for primate experimentation, has reviewed the documents and filed complaints with state and federal authorities. The documents specifically show how the WaNPRC accepted and moved infected monkeys without alerting authorities. This not only causes public health issues but also renders any science from the monkeys unusable.
