  • Ep. 193: WHAT NIH NEEDS POST-COLLINS: A MODERN APPROACH TO SCIENCE

Dr. Francis Collins, the director of the National Institutes of Health, announced he is leaving at the end of 2021. PETA has been calling on him to resign since August. His departure means the biggest supporter/enabler of animal torture and experimentation in government-funded research can now be replaced with someone who is a true visionary of modern science. It could be a major breakthrough that saves animals, redirects money to science that works, as well as help the American public who expect NIH to produce medical advancements.

Kathy Guillermo, PETA Sr. PETA explains what's at stake for science, the country, and lab animals.

  • Ep. 192: Laws violated, Monkeys Dead, Washington National Primate Center (WaNPRC) Must Shut Down

A former primate researcher turned into an animal activist when she saw how monkeys were dying at the Washington National Primate Research Center (WaNPRC) at the University of Washington, Seattle. It wasn't from the research. The monkeys arrived sick after being bred in the WaNPRC breeding facility in Arizona. Documents obtained by PETA show the site was contaminated with Valley fever, and was 500 meters from another toxic waste site. Dr. Lisa Jones-Engel worked at WaNPRC for 14 years and tried to tell her bosses. But they ignored her. Jones-Engel left, and came to work for PETA. Her research was used in an investigative piece by USA Today (Oct. 5, 2021) that showed  WaNPRC violated state and federal laws and didn't care about the health and well-being of the monkeys in the breeding colony.

Jones-Engel tells Emil Guillermo that the Department of Health and Human Services should shut down both WaNPRC in Seattle and the Arizona breeding facility for providing toxic monkeys to be used in NIH-funded research.

Shut down the lab and the six other national primate centers in the U.S.

  • Ep. 191: PETA Sues NIH To End Useless Animal Tests And Modernize Science

PETA is fighting NIH to modernize science in America with protests and lawsuits. Last week, demonstrators paid a visit to an experimenter's neighborhood in the DC area.  In court, PETA filed two lawsuits against NIH one on First Amendment grounds for blocking key words on Facebook and Instagram. Another suit alleges NIH spent millions of dollars on sepsis research while knowing the hideous animal experiments would not be successful. Dr. Emily Trunnell, PETA senior scientist talks to Emil Guillermo.

  • Ep. 190: Birds Should be Free, Not Domesticated Nor Caged.

PETA Sr. VP Christina Matthies talks to Emil Guillermo about birds, especially the domesticated ones. Most human companions aren't as knowledgeable about birds. It means the situation devolves to the point a bird rescue is needed. How best to avoid a bird rescue? Don't turn to birds to be your companion animals. Let the birds be birds.

Matthies is also the Editor-in-Chief of PETA's Global Animal Times. Check for a new issue this month.

  • Ep. 189: Dr. John P. Gluck--PETA Trailblazing Advocacy Award Winner--And His Journey To A Cruelty-Free Science.

Dr. John P. Gluck is being honored with PETA's Trailblazing Advocacy Award for being a shining example of ethics in science. The one-time animal experimenter, who studied with the infamous Harry Harlow, describes his own transformation from animal experimenter to a compassionate bioethicist committed to a cruelty-free science. In conversation with Emil Guillermo, Gluck talks about his childhood, his studies in college, and his professional life. As a young boy, John Gluck was kind to animals. But as a scientist, he was mentored by the notorious vivisector Dr.Harry Harlow at the University of Wisconsin. Then something clicked. He began to see the animals as patients, not tools of science. Gluck's book, "Voracious Science and Vulnerable Animals" has become a guide for scientists, especially of a new generation, seeking to practice a science aligned with their ethical identity. Gluck talks with Emil Guillermo about the ethical journey he's taken and admits he remains haunted by the faces of the animals he experimented on. • Ep. 188: PETA: The Truth About The Dogs Left Behind in Afghanistan

When social media blew up regarding whether military dogs were left behind in the evacuation of Afghanistan, people sought PETA's help. PETA Sr. VP Daphna Nachminovich tells Emil Guillermo how PETA got a response from Central Command explaining that "no military dogs" were abandoned. But that still left 150 dogs of some military contractors, and even some dogs who were domestic companions in Kabul behind. PETA was told the dogs were not caged but released on Kabul airport grounds when the decision was made not to bring them on C-17s that had more than enough room to accommodate them. PETA continues to be in touch with folks in the military and on the ground in Kabul about the dogs. For the latest go to PETA.org.

  • EP. 187: PETA Undercover: "Certified humanely raised"? At Plainville Farms it was certified animal abuse.

GAP, the Global Animal Partnership, gives a "Humane Raised" Certification to meat products that can end up duping consumers, a PETA undercover investigation has exposed. At Plainville Farms, PETA video shows how animals are abused routinely. But the worst of it is how the farm sells the turkeys under GAP's "Humanely Raised" certification, backed by the ASPCA and the Humane Society of the U.S. It's a sham. Beware. GAP has suspended the farm, and the workers there have been terminated. But turkeys are still being sold. PETA VP Dan Paden said he's presented the video to the Pennsylvania State police for prosecution on animal welfare laws. Don't be fooled by the GAP label on any products. Paden says the "humane raised" marketing scheme is a sham. Beware. Paden talks to Emil Guillermo about the investigation.

  • Ep. 186: Did SeaWorld Incompetence Kill Amaya the Orca?

On August 19, SeaWorld/San Diego attendants placed ten Orcas in a single tank even when it was known that some of the animals had histories of aggression toward each other. The next day, one Orca, Corky was badly injured, and another, Amaya, was dead. Whistleblowerscalled PETA about the incident and PETA has filed a complaint with the USDA and has called for an independent investigation. Amaya was just six years old and born in captivity. Corky is the oldest Orca in captivity and is also twice the size. They are both logged in the new book, "Orcapedia," a register of all the Orcas, living and dead, who have been subjected to what its author Paul Watson calls "an international slave trade." Watson, a founder of Greenpeace, and known for his actions to save whales, talks with Emil Guillermo about Orcas in captivity. In memory of Amaya, we reprise this interview which was originally released in March of 2021. It also serves as a reminder to not visit and patronize Sea World until the Orcas are released.

  • Ep. 184: To End NIH Animal Tests, Dr. Francis Collins Must Resign

A mouse burst into flames in an experiment gone bad. Animals were left without water. Monkeys and guinea pigs badly neglected. Violations of animal welfare guidelines. And the culprit was the lab at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). NIH not only funds scientific research around the country, it has its own labs in the Washington, DC area. PETA was forced to use the Freedom of Information Act and uncovered dozens of violations at NIH, which insists on doing outdated animal experiments even though it produces no benefit to humans. It's time for a change. The head man at NIH, Dr. Francis Collins, must resign now.

PETA VP for Laboratory Investigations, Dr. Alka Chandna talks to Emil Guillermo about NIH and what PETA uncovered using the Freedom of Information Act.
