The Phillies Show

Has any pitcher in baseball been better than Zack Wheeler the past five seasons?

If you look at the numbers, Wheeler is No. 1. And it’s not even close. Wheeler leads baseball with 25.4 bWAR and 24.7 fWAR from 2020-24. He is second in wins (59), second in innings pitched (829 1/3) and WHIP (1.03). He is third in ERA (2.94). He has a career 2.18 postseason ERA, which is the fourth-best (minimum 10 starts).

But what makes Wheeler tick? We learned a little more about Wheeler’s preparation, his demeanor on the mound and more in a recent conversation at BayCare Ballpark in Clearwater, Florida.

Realmuto, Alec Bohm, Nick Castellanos, Zack Wheeler, Aaron Nola, Andrew Painter, John Middleton, Dave Dombrowski and Rob Thomson are just a few Phillies’ personnel who have talked in the past few days.

They’ve talked about Father Time, new spots in the lineup, trade rumors and much more.

The Eagles pulverized the Chiefs on Sunday in perhaps the greatest performance by a Philadelphia team to ever win a championship.

We had a blast watching the Eagles on Sunday, but we’re just as excited for Spring Training to begin this week in Clearwater, Fla. Phillies pitchers and catchers will have their first official workout on Wednesday at Carpenter Complex. Ruben, Jim and Todd discuss the things they’re most interested in seeing this spring. It ranges from Alec Bohm’s mindset to Ranger Suárez’s conditioning and health to top prospects like Andrew Painter, Aidan Miller and Justin Crawford.

They finish the show by opening up a few packs of Topps Chrome 2024. Unfortunately, the Paul Skenes 1/1 rookie has been found, so none of us struck it rich. But we had fun anyway.

J.T. Realmuto is set to make his seventh consecutive Opening Day start at catcher for the Phillies.

It would tie Darren Daulton for the second-longest streak by any catcher in Phillies history. Mike Lieberthal started a record 10 in a row. Will there be an eighth for Realmuto? He will be a free agent following the 2025 season. Realmuto joined the show this week to talk his present and future in Philadelphia; the team’s chances to win a World Series; how much he thinks he can play in 2025; what makes Zack Wheeler, Aaron Nola and Ranger Suárez tick and more!

Phillies manager Rob Thomson visited the show last week, and he said he will tinker with the Phils’ lineup throughout the spring.

Thomson discussed moving Kyle Schwarber down in the lineup to protect Bryce Harper, and he mentioned Trea Turner as the best candidate to hit leadoff in Schwarber’s place. Ruben, Jim and Todd dig into the possibilities, and if the lineup really matters.

We get into more of Thomson’s comments from last week, and break down a Phillies Show-related Jeopardy! question from a few weeks ago.

Less than two weeks remain before Phillies pitchers and catchers have their first workout in Clearwater, Fla.

Who better to set the scene than Phillies manager Rob Thomson?

We had plenty to talk about with Thomson, including expectations for the 2025 Phillies, the rotation potentially being the best in baseball, potential changes in the lineup, Alec Bohm’s mindset coming into camp, Max Kepler’s ability to be the everyday left fielder and more!

We open this week’s show by soaking in the Eagles’ NFC championship win on Sunday.

But this is a Phillies show, of course, so we answered your Phillies questions, including possible contract extensions for J.T. Realmuto, Kyle Schwarber and Ranger Suárez; free-agent Max Scherzer possibly fitting into the Phillies’ bullpen; Johan Rojas’ progress in Winter Ball and his role on the 2025 Phillies; an early look at Spring Training roster battles and more.

Former Phillies closer Billy Wagner learned on Tuesday night that he has been elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y.

It was a long time coming.

We had Wagner on the show in late December, and he talked about the long, often torturous march toward baseball immortality. So, it was great to see Wagner finally get the call. We talk about Wagner’s enshrinement, plus the chances for Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins and Bobby Abreu. No question Utley is on the best track.

We also talk about Sluggball! What’s Sluggball? Ruben explains, but for more information check it out here!
