The Phillies Show

The Eagles will host the NFC Championship on Sunday in Philly, while many people think the Dodgers are headed to the 2025 World Series following a remarkable offseason, which included the recent signings of Japanese star Roki Sasaki and closer Tanner Scott.

We talk football because hey, why not? But we also dig into the Dodgers, Sasaki, Scott and more. Is it good or bad for baseball? Is it bad for the Phillies?

The Phillies dipped their toe into the Japanese market on Friday, signing right-hander Koyo Aoyagi to a minor league contract with an invite to Spring Training. He could be a swingman in 2025. The Phillies hope Aoyagi brings short-term and long-term benefits to the organization. Lastly, we share out favorite Bob Uecker stories, who passed away last week at age 90.

In less than a month, Phillies fans will see Zack Wheeler, Aaron Nola and Ranger Suárez back on the mound, throwing bullpen sessions at Carpenter Complex in Clearwater, Fla.

The first pitchers and catchers workout is Feb. 12.

Fans will see Andrew Painter for the first time in a long time, too. They will see newcomers like Jesús Luzardo, Jordan Romano and Joe Ross. Nobody knows more about these pitchers than Phillies pitching coach Caleb Cotham, who enters his fifth year with the organization. Cotham visited The Phillies Show this week and talked about the Phillies’ rotation, which could be the best in baseball; how the bullpen will manage without Jeff Hoffman and Carlos Estévez; why Wheeler might be baseball’s best pitcher, Painter’s timeline to the big leagues and more!

Everybody is in a good mood today following the Eagles’ victory over Green Bay.

New Phillies left fielder Max Kepler was upbeat last week when he talked about his upcoming season. The Phils signed Kepler to a one-year, $10 million contract in December. He will be their everyday left fielder. If Kepler is healthy, the Phils should see a boost in left. If not, it could be a problem. We reacted to Kepler’s comments about his health, joining a new team and more.

We also reacted to Jeff Hoffman’s three-year, $33 million contract with the Blue Jays. Hoffman revamped his career in Philly, but it was clear he wasn’t returning with the Phillies focused on players on one-year contracts.

Could the Phils sign another reliever before Opening Day? Or is the Phillies’ luxury tax situation going to prevent it?

In a few short weeks, Phillies fans can watch the organization’s top prospects working out at Carpenter Complex in Clearwater, Fla.

The group includes MLB Pipeline Top 100 prospects like Aidan Miller, Andrew Painter and Justin Crawford. It also includes Top 30 Phillies prospects, like Eduardo Tait, Moisés Chace, Dante Nori, Griffin Burkholder and more.

Nobody outside the Phillies knows the Phils’ farm system better than MLB Pipeline’s Jonathan Mayo, who has been covering prospects and telling their stories for more than 25 years. Mayo spent time this week with Ruben, Jim and Todd, sharing his thoughts on the Phillies prospects that hope to be playing at Citizens Bank Park one day.

We asked you for Phillies questions, and you delivered.

Could the Phillies make more moves before spring training opens next month in Clearwater, Florida? If this is it, are we satisfied? If the Phillies make a last-minute move, who might it be? If Alec Bohm isn’t traded, how do we think he handles it?

The Phillies might have the best rotation in baseball in 2025, if newly acquired left-hander Jesús Luzardo is healthy following an injury-plagued 2024. Luzardo spoke with Phillies reporters on Monday. He discussed his injured back and why he thinks it is a thing of the past.

Big, if true.

But if Luzardo (or any other Phillies starter) isn’t healthy, the Phillies should be better protected after signing Joe Ross to a one-year, $4 million deal. He provides starting pitching depth, although he is expected to open the season in the bullpen. How does the Phillies’ bullpen look now? What does it mean for Taijuan Walker and others?

Everybody was waiting for the Phillies to do morethis winter.

Well, they did.

On Thursday night, news broke that the Phillies signed Max Kepler to a one-year, $10 million contract. Dave Dombrowski said Friday that the Phillies were finished making “impactful” free agent signings, sending Phillies fans into a tizzy. But Dombrowski hinted at the pursuit of a No. 5 starter, too. On Sunday morning, news broke that the Phils traded prospects Staryln Caba and Emaarion Boyd to Miami for left-hander Jesús Luzardo and minor league catcher Paul McIntosh.

What do we think about the Kepler and Luzardo moves? Is this it? Or might Dombrowski have something else up his sleeve?

It’s almost 2025 and the Phillies still have plenty of work to do.

What’s the hold up? We asked you for your Phillies questions and you delivered. Why haven’t the Phils made a trade? Why have the only signed on free agent in Jordan Romano? Are they overvaluing Alec Bohm? Who replaces Bohm at third base if they do trade him? Plus, much, much more.
