Two of the biggest NFL insiders are going at it. Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport have tweeted conflicting reports regarding whether the Broncos wanted DeMeco Ryans or Sean Payton. The convo switched to Mike Tomlin as a longtime team insider says a contract extension is likely on the horizon. Does Tomlin deserve it? Is the standard really the standard in Pittsburgh?

Steelers insider Brian Batko from the PG joined the show. Chris asked Brian about another impending Mike Tomlin contract extension. Brian said he’s not sure who out there would be a better fit for the franchise in its current state, but the shortcomings of Tomlin and his staff should not be avoided and there should be at least some pressure put on by Art Rooney II if things continue in this direction. Brian suggested the name Davis Webb the other day as a player, but soon-to-be coach that the Steelers should at least consider. Brian thinks OL and DL are two positions Tomlin and Co. are watching closely at the Senior Bowl this week, with cornerback being a close third. Brian likes the idea of going OL then CB with picks 17 and 32. Chris asked Brian about the prospect of selecting a WR early in the draft.

Pat Freiermuth revealed with Ben Roethlisberger that the Steelers offense, specifically the quarterbacks, were not allowed to call hot routes at the line of scrimmage. It appears the Steelers were handcuffing Mitch Trubisky and Kenny Pickett. Chris thinks it’s a shot at the coaching because the QBs should not have been put into that situation.

He said Ron Hextall isn’t urgent to make changes that are necessary and it feels like the team might actually miss the playoffs. Chris thinks the season could be in for an ugly ending and it could lead to a very ugly future for the Pens. He said at times the team is hard to watch.

Sean said the Pens are in the midst of a pretty tough Eastern Conference and they aren’t in the elite group anymore, but probably in the second level of teams. Sean described the middle of the pack teams, like the Penguins, as “mushy” and noted that each team has a big fatal flaw. He highlighted the Bruins and Maple Leafs as two of the strongest teams in the East, but doesn’t think highly of a lot of the times around the same level as the Pens. He said Ron Hextall gets a C+ from him, but the room for error gets smaller and smaller. Chris asked if the Penguins made the right move bringing the band back together.
