Chris Hoke joins us on the show. Hoke was on the Mason Rudolph train from the beginning and was glad he was proven right over the weekend. He says Kenny will be given the chance again to start, but Mason is the hot hand and you should go to him again this weekend in Seattle. First round picks get 100 lives, but guys like Mason Rudolph do not have the same luxury. They dive into the Jaylen Warren block against Cincy, more on Mason Rudolph, and more.
More with Chris Hoke. The talk is all about the quarterback situation, however the defense was also surprising. WIth a few lesser known name players, they held the Bengals. Myles Jack, who went from the couch to the NFL, was very surprising to Ron. Chris said he looked better than all he did last season. Eric Rowe was the most visible proof of the "Next Man Up" mentality that Mike Tomlin preaches to his players. Chris talks about the Hall of Fame and the Hines Ward and James Harrison snubs.
Ron and Chris take a look around the NFL. Chris thinks that Lamar Jackson is the favorite for the MVP award as it currently stands. The 49ers are his favorite right now. The Eagles are a team that he does not trust, so he adds the Lions as a team to watch. He also says to not discount the Buffalo Bills. Finally the predictions for the game, Chris says the Steelers will take the game against the Seahawks.
(Hour 1 with Cook and Joe)
The Penguins put a hurting on the New York Islanders in Long Island last night by winning 7-0. Kris Letang had 5 points in the second period alone, the most by a defenseman in NHL history. Valtteri Puustinen scored his first goal in his career. Ron knocked Evgeni Malkin yesterday for not doing much lately, but Malkin responded by scoring 2 goals himself last night.
Ron goes into the disappointing news that Hines Ward and James Harrison have been snubbed once again by the NFL Hall of Fame. Hines Ward was very underrated throughout his career. Julius Peppers and Antonio Gates made it to the finalists, Ron believes both will get in on the first ballot leaving 3 spots for 13 guys. We open the phone lines to listeners who are also upset about the Ward and Harrison snubs.
(Hour 3 with Cook and Joe)
Sportsnet Pittsburgh's Jay Caufield joins the show to talk about the Penguins dismantling of the New York Islanders last night. "They made the Islanders look pedestrian". He was also surprised that the Islanders left Ilya Sorokin in the net for so long. They talk about each goal, including the 2 goals in 7 seconds by Jake Guentzel. What will the Penguins do with the expiring contact of Guentzel? Do they keep him or do they trade him at the deadline? The main question is, will they be able to afford him? Jay believes that Tristian Jarry is your number one goalie going forward. But both goalies are consistent enough to give you a shot each night to win. The Penguins need to start putting point streaks together to have a shot at the playoffs within the division.
Ron reacts to some of the comments made yesterday by Kenny Pickett and Mason Rudolph. Pickett says that it is not his call if he plays on Sunday. It is up to Tomlin and the trainers. Ron reacts to the supposed shot Rudolph took at Ben Roethlisberger and his comments on Geno Smith.
We hear more from Rudolph about how he was serious about joining the real estate business and the adversity he has faced getting to where he is now.
(Hour 4 with Cook and Joe)
Former Steelers and Seahawks linebacker Chad Brown joins the show to preview the matchup between the Steelers and Seahawks. Chad says that Seattle may not be a great team, but they are a very well coached team because of Pete Carroll. He says the Seahawks find themselves with the 7th seed in the playoffs, they will play with confidence and belief to find a way to win. Chad says it is a "pleasure" to be around Carroll and wishes he has the same energy when he is Carroll's age.
Chad talks about TJ Watt vs Bobby Wagner. He says both are at the top of their game and understanding of the game. Chad loves Mike Tomlin as a coach but understands the criticism that Tomlin has received because of the lack of playoff wins. His biggest question is who is a 'better' coach that would replace Mike Tomlin. Chad takes a look around the league and discusses who has a legitimate shot at the playoffs. He also says the Russell Wilson trade will go down as a top 3 worst trade in NFL history behind the Herschel Walker and Dashaun Watson trade. He predicts a Seahawks win.
More recap of the Penguins win over the Islanders last night. Rikard Rakell had not scored all season and now has 2 goals in his last 2 games. Jake Guentzel scored twice in 15 seconds, the fastest 2 goals by the same player since Darryl Edestrand did in 9 seconds in 1972. Does Alex Ovechkin still have enough left in the tank to catch up to Wayne Gretzky? Final calls of the day of the NFL Hall of Fame and Hines Ward.
