I don't like feeling weak. Physically, emotionally, or spiritually. And it doesn't help that we live in a culture that says we have to "do it all" and "be it all" to feel worthy.
And yet, life throws us situations that remind us of our weaknesses. It leaves us feeling vulnerable and like we aren't enough. For me, it is my son's recent cancer diagnosis. For you, it may be a job loss, a new unwelcomed normal, or whatever is your personal "cancer" in your life.
So, what does scripture say we should do about our weakness? Listen to find encouragement for when you're afraid to admit the weak parts of yourself.
(1:58) Acknowledging Your Weakness
(4:03) What You Can Do to Help Weakness
(5:39) How to Accept Help in Weakness
(7:32) What Scripture Says About Accepting Help
We've all likely found ourselves in that awkward situation where someone we love is hurting. Maybe they are grieving the loss of a relationship, the death of a family member, the fear of losing a job or even the sadness of having a sick child. In our search to find the perfect helpful words, it can be easy to say the wrong thing. or worse, not say anything at all.
In this episode, Dr. Denise Bickel joins us again to give us practical wisdom about what to say - and not to say - when someone we love is hurting. Her decades of experience will help us all be wiser, and consequently, kinder the next time we find ourselves in this position.
Guest:
Dr. Denise Bickel, PhD, MSW, LCSW, has decades of experience as a palliative care social worker and is an adjunct professor at the University of Denver. Denise is also an avid Crossfit participant and former triathlete and marathoner. She is also Robin's mentor.
(4:00) These are the things that are ALWAYS appropriate to say.
(7:00) Offering someone in need your help is a beautiful gesture, but Denise explains how it can actually be more stressful than helpful. Here are better ways to frame your desire to support your friends and family.
(10:30) Want to walk along someone during a hardship? Here is the best advice for doing so in the most meaningful way.
(12:45) Here is the one tip that Rachel and Denise have both found is helpful in encouraging people to open up during a conversation.
(17:30) The one thing you should never say to someone struggling through a difficult situation.
(24:00) Ever given well-intentioned advice to someone in the midst of their struggle? Here's why it might cause more harm than good.
(26:00) Want to truly be helpful? Here's why your job is to embrace the awkwardness.
(28:00) What do you do when someone says something (or nothing) and your feelings get hurt?

In my last R&R, I talked about holding happiness and heartbreak at the same time. With Missouri's stay at home orders extended, this conversation may be more important than ever.
We don't truly know when we will be able to leave our homes and gather with our friends, so in the meantime, how do we learn to create new rhythms to keep our cup full?

Need a little R&R heading into the weekend? Here's your bonus episode of The Problem with Perfect designed to give you just that.
This week it's one-on-one with Robin as she explains the tension created by her son's recent birthday. One one hand, after his battle with cancer three years ago, she is incredibly grateful for another birthday. And on the other hand, she mourns yet another birthday where the world seems out of control. The trick is learning for these two things to co-exist so that peace and joy abound.

The anxiety and fear that the coronavirus pandemic is producing seems to be intensifying the longer we have to sit with our new reality. It’s clear that many of us are worrying about life and death issues for ourselves or those we love, as well as the long list of unknowns to face after this is "over." But what might be less obvious are the emotions that come with the long list of things we've lost.
Psychologists have a word for these feelings associated with loss. It's called grief.
In this episode, Dr. Denise Bickel helps us understand that it's important to acknowledge and grieve what the pandemic has taken from us. Whether it's our inability to keep our routines (and the comfort that comes from doing so), big life event celebrations, or our sense of security - the losses are real. Grieving them will help us move forward and, as Denise explains, help us create a new post-corona normal.
Guest:
Dr. Denise Bickel, PhD, MSW, LCSW, has decades of experience as a palliative care social worker and is an adjunct professor at the University of Denver. Denise is also an avid Crossfit participant and former triathlete and marathoner. She is also Robin's mentor.

10:45 We can't control the coronavirus, but what can we control to help process the grief that this new reality has brought us?
