Thalia is a counselor in the UK, and her story serves as an encouragement to others who want to speak out but are afraid of the potential consequences. She spoke with me today about some of her experiences in a counselor training program about 10 years ago.  While the program did provide a good therapy education, it also required counseling students to take part in "diversity" trainings that informed  them that as white people they were oppressors.  The contrast between the Rogerian principles they were learning as counselors and the way they were instructed to understand their own identities was jarring.  Thalia decided she had to speak up, knowing that she risked being the only one do do so.  

Though it took courage to stand up to her instructors, the result for Thalia was positive: she was able to maintain a dialogue and broaden the discussion beyond the ideological orthodoxy presented.  She shares her  story in order to encourage others to continue to try to keep a discussion going when something is not right, even though it can be difficult and intimidating to do so.  Thalia also recommends Critical Therapy Antidote https://criticaltherapyantidote.org/  to prospective counseling clients (and I would add, therapists and counseling students as well) who are looking for a resource for therapy professionals who are dedicated to providing counseling free of Critical Social Justice Theory.

James Esses was three years into a Master’s program and had logged many hours of work with clients as a trainee- he was nearly finished with his degree and on his way to opening a private therapy practice in the UK.   Concerned about guidance equating exploratory therapy for  gender-questioning young people to “conversion therapy,” James began speaking out about the need to preserve the ability for counselors to engage in non-judgmental exploration around this issue as they do with all other issues presented by their clients.

Chanel Pfahl is a high school teacher in Ontario who in 2021 found herself under investigation and suspended from her position by her school board for some fairly innocuous comments she made in a private  Facebook group.  Her “harmful” comments: suggesting that schools should not be indoctrinating school children with Critical Race Theory, and  that if CRT is to be taught it should be offered alongside other views.   She has been outspoken about the dangers of indoctrination and the need for schools to be non-partisan and balanced.  

I love what Chanel said about being brave and standing up for what is  right: "Atrocities have occurred throughout human history, and the only reason that they've occurred is that individuals have been cowards. They've put themselves first - they've thought 'I'll save myself in the short term and hopefully other people will figure it out.'  And often it doesn't go that way. Nobody's asking you to go to war.  We're not telling you to put on a suit and you might get blown up.  We're saying literally just speak up."

Jenny has become more and more aware of the contradictions and logical fallacies of Critical Social Justice Ideology over the past several years.  While she was a counseling student, Jenny felt frustrated by the lack of academic rigor in her graduate program, but she mostly accepted  CSJ ideology. However, all along there were aspects of her training that she found jarring and fraught with intellectual inconsistencies.   Now a licensed counselor and self-employed in private practice, Jenny has a clear sense of how Social Justice Ideology short-changes the counseling client and contradicts the ethical standards counselors are bound to follow.  In this discussion she shares valuable insights from her own experience as well as her concerns about the shortcomings of contemporary counselor training.

“A group collective can easily attract the projection of the Self and swallow up the individual who succumbs to it. Identification with political parties or religious creeds would be examples of solutio within a group.”  -Edward Edinger, Anatomy of the Psyche.  

After a therapist was instrumental in helping him overcome a some serious challenges in his life, Neil was so inspired by the process that he decided he wanted to provide a similar service to others.  He went  back to school, devoting a great deal of time and significant financial  resources to the study of transpersonal therapy.  The first two years were amazing: full of growth and connection.  After his second year,  Neil needed to step away for a time in order to save money to complete the program.  When he returned after his leave of absence, something was different: the students were speaking a new (Social Justice) language, and there was a new mandatory DEI course which seemed entirely out of place in the context of the program’s other teachings.

Following the DEI course, Neil was so disappointed and disturbed that he decided he could not stay in the program.  He was able to speak with the founder and head of the school prior to leaving, and to his  surprise, the founder agreed with him about the inappropriateness of the inclusion of CSJ ideology.  He revealed to Neil that he was forced to include it in order to maintain accreditation, and that the accrediting body was responsible for structuring the DEI course.  In this conversation Neil provides details of his experience and shares how he has pivoted, adjusting his career goals despite the setback and finding a creative and fulfilling alternative way to use his skills to help people who need support.
