  • A Handbook For Relationships With Anna Tomkins

In this episode we meet Anna Tomkins, creator of ‘Handbook for Today’, a set of guided journals to introduce tools and positive mindsets to encourage wellbeing and personal growth. Also, as the creator of  the ‘Handbook for Getting Hitched’ journals, Anna is perfectly equipped to discuss and advise on all things relationships. John and Anna talk about her journals and how they can help to achieve wellbeing, how couples can invest in their future together by asking the right questions at the start, Anna’s own romantic relationships and tips about how to communicate effectively.
    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • ‘Handbook for Today’ prompts the user to journal thoughts, be guided into positive thinking by noting learning opportunities gained and incidents of uplifting events that occurred throughout their day and gives them tools to achieve a healthy mindset.
    • Small occurrences, (smiles, interactions, pleasurable experiences), can be noted as enjoyable experiences that can increase our sense of well being.
    • ‘Handbook for Getting Hitched’ encourages couples to discuss important things before getting married or embarking on a long term relationship that would normally be quite awkward to approach, or simply overlooked.
    • Anna finds being comfortable in one's own company allows you to make better decisions based less on need to be partnered and more on aspects like compatibility and mindset.
    • The significance in communication is evident in the need to verify if both parties are ready for a discussion at all, for instance. Asking if someone is ready for a serious discussion and identifying a good time to do so is part of a good level of communication.

    BEST MOMENTS
‘It’s about recognising those very small things that maybe we would overlook or don’t recognise but actually that touching of nature and stuff brings something up that we really enjoy.’ – John
‘The Church (of England) gives you a nudge to do a wedding preparation course or read some kind of manuals. I really enjoyed doing that. I really thought it was a great idea.’ - Anna
‘In a couple everybody is entitled to ask those questions and there is not that much help and the workbooks are really just something to guide through these questions.’ – Anna
‘In retrospect I consider myself very lucky because I’m quite ok in my own company so I was  not always looking for a partner to bring something into my life.’ – Anna
‘I wasn’t prepared to meet anyone, which was brilliant, because there was no ‘performance’ on my side and I don’t think on his side either.’ – Anna
‘People that don’t really have that (support network) do really struggle to break away from these unhappy spaces that they're in, even if it’s a work one as well.’ – John

  • Building a Brand is About Building Relationships With Leila Singh

What do building a personal brand and building a relationship have in common with each other? More than you would think. In this episode John speaks to Leila Singh, expert in Career Development Coaching, Executive Coaching, Life Coaching, Public Speaking, Brand Consulting, Corporate Training and Leadership.
Author of ‘Success Redefined: How to Leverage Your Natural Talents to become Limitless!‘, Leila is also the host of the podcast Mi-Brand, helping people define and present their personal brand in the best way possible.
John and Leila discuss her career so far, the concept of personal branding, public speaking, speaking up, making things happen for yourself and the importance of your relationship and understanding of yourself.
    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • From accountancy through recruitment to a corporate role in a tech company, Leila developed her confidence and experience in sales and eventually moved into coaching.
    • After training in Neuro Linguistic Programming and many other disciplines, Leila decided she could show people how to create their own personal brand to facilitate the kind of life they really want.
    • To create freedom within your life a solid personal brand is invaluable. How do you want to be perceived? How do you achieve a positive mindset to prevent yourself holding you back? Leila deals with all these questions to move you towards your goals.
    • Being different from your peers in a work group doesn’t have to be seen as a disadvantage, it can be seen as an opportunity to shine.
    • A confident and skilled public speaker, Leila has spoken for TedX and many other forums.
    • Asking for a pay rise is a hurdle that Leila often coaches people for. Its about realising that speaking up is key and understanding that things are within your control if you take action.

    BEST MOMENTS
‘A lot of my decisions in my life have been based on intuition and gut instinct. My decision to leave accountancy was a huge one, because I then took a 50% pay cut to go and become a recruitment consultant.’ – Leila
‘I’ve always been into personal growth. I’ve always invested in reading books and looking at online courses.’ – Leila
‘Understanding and owning your values, your brand identity. How do you want people to see you, what do you want to be known for? Those are the things that, for me, reflect personal branding and brand identity.’ – Leila
‘That relationship that you’ve built there, you can really have that ‘know, like and trust’ way with you that has enabled you to keep those relationships going and also find those people that really want to work with you and what you do now.’ – John
‘That’s where my coaching comes in because for me it's all about not being the victim and blaming everything outside of you that you cannot control, but actually what can you control and what can you do?’ – Leila
‘I think everything you’ve said shows the significance of the relationships that you cultivate outside, but there’s also that massive significance of that relationship that you cultivate with yourself.’ - John

  • Why Do We Click with Certain People in a Relationship ?

Some of the questions John is commonly asked are “How do I know if they are the one for me?”, “How do I know what to look for in a partner?” And “What can I do as I'm having second thoughts about my relationship?”. There are no guarantees when it comes to finding the right person for a partnership and you cannot make people love you no matter how hard you try. So what do we know, with certainty, amongst the complexities of loving relationships?
    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Science, in fact, dictates that opposites do not attract when it comes to healthy relationships. Being too similar can be as big an issue. One thing that is essential in a secure relationship is that each feels that the other is committed to them.
    • Reward theory argues that attraction stems from satisfying people's basic needs for self enhancement, connection and self expansion.
    • Evolutionary theory argues that women are attracted to the more industrious and ambitious type partners while men are attracted to beautiful, chaste or innocent partners.
    • Instrumentality theory argues that attraction depends on whatever goals people most hope to achieve when dating somebody.
    • Being authentic is essential and giving up or being forced to give up on any part of yourself destroys what you are trying to build and is also unsustainable.
    • The law of attraction says that if you focus on what you want in a relationship fully then your reticular activating system will focus on what you want to bring towards you on a subconscious level and will filter out what you don’t focus on.
    • Understanding who we have attracted in the past and understanding why we have attracted that type of person is a great start.

    BEST MOMENTS
‘They put it that the sweet spot is when the couple have a bedrock of similarity. There are enough similarities that work together, but enough nuances that compliment the relationship and bring something to the relationship that the other one doesn’t.’
‘It depends on how you look at attachment theory that can argue either way that people with opposing attachment styles are attracted to one another or people with similar attachment styles.’
‘Never believe that you have to please someone into liking or loving you.’
‘Did you realise that you do not need to be perfect for someone else either? Maybe a perfect fit, but not a perfect person.’
‘If the person that you’re with doesn’t match up to what you want and need in a relationship then it may be time to sit down and think about how you can address this with them.’

  • Exceeding Your Own Expectations With Steve Beckles-Ebusua

In this episode John talks to The Speaker with the Orange Tie himself, Steve Beckles-Ebusua.

Steve is a school motivational speaker of over 20 years experience, who has reached over one million people. He also had a career in secondary school education and was a coach before specialising in the educational environment. He has spoken in many countries, including Sweden, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Italy and the USA. His organisation also delivers soft skills training to organisations throughout the UK.

As well as being an Amazon bestseller, Steve was recently on an expert panel assembled by the Enfield council to discuss exams and revision techniques to support and aid parents in the Enfield area.

Steve has his own fortnightly Motivational radio show, which helps people to look beyond their beliefs and exceed their expectations in life. He has special guests who speak about personal development, mental health, physical health, and developing a growth mindset.

John and Steve chat about how they met, how Steve’s job came about, learning habits, the story of the orange tie, communication, childhood experience informing beliefs and family.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Steve started in Mentoring, Support Work and Teaching before deciding he would like to have his own company as a vehicle to spread his positive mindset.
    • Read more books if you want to learn. Even if you are not into reading, use audiobooks and turn your car into a university. Always learn something new everyday.
    • Steve splits his tasks into 15 minute segments, giving himself a quarter of an hour to achieve each one. In this way momentum is kept up and interest is maintained.
    • The title The Speaker with the Orange Tie came about through a mistaken purchase. Steve was actually hoping for a red tie! This has since expanded to shoes, socks, belts and cars! It is now a uniform to Steve that allows him to present his best self.
    • Communication and interest and interaction with other people is an excellent way of creating good relationships with those around you. It is not dishonest to present a different aspect of your personality to each person, everyone does it.
    • Our belief systems are formed in our formative years. The things we hear about ourselves become truth.
    • We often mistake our feelings of dislike for circumstance with a dislike for people. Our negative feelings sometimes bleed into interactions surrounding the circumstance we are uncomfortable with.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘I think one of the things John, that I always start by saying is I think it’s so important in life to know our purpose and I think you’ve heard that said many times.’ – Steve

‘I’m often saying to people, if you ever want to learn anything, don’t try to reinvent the wheel. Just get a good book, even if you’re not into reading.’ – Steve

‘All of this stuff is stuff I’ve learnt from somewhere else. You know, I’m always reading articles and I’m not much of a book reader myself although I do have my own book. I like to read articles, like short snippets of information, that’s how I learn best.’ – John

‘The reality is we are kaleidoscopic people and personalities and do not want to adjust!? I mean, you’re a coach, you know this better than me.’ – Steve

‘I guarantee you that you will hold some memories of experiencing something in those early years that, if they’re not challenged, become stronger and stronger as each year goes on and develops into a belief.’ – Steve

  • Overcoming Trauma And Anxiety With Gemma Margerison

John Speaks to Gemma Margerison, Staff Development and Corporate Trainer, Coach, Speaker, Author and Trauma and PTSD support advocate.

With almost a decade of experience researching and working in wellbeing and resilience, including 3 years delivering training for BAE Systems, Gemma works with staff in public and private organisations to increase their resilience, self-care, inner strength, and confidence to reduce burnout and increase self-empowerment through her business Connected.

John and Gemma discuss how her organisation, Connected, helps individuals and workforces develop resilience and teaches wellbeing, her book ‘Connected’ and how and why it was written and her own journey with anxiety and how she overcame it.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Connected provides one to one coaching focusing on resilience, and also delivering corporate training to help workforces move away from ‘bounce back’ thinking of recovery towards a proactive and preventative tool.
    • The book, ‘Connected’, was developed as part of Gemma's doctorate in coaching and mentoring. Within the book are twelve areas that are an expansion on the four spheres of connection which we need to live a holistically healthy life. These are connection to ourselves, connection to others, connection to the world around us and connection to a sense of purpose.
    • The book is filled with advice and guidance from different wellbeing and coaching experts in all different areas of expertise along with their contact details to provide further access to their skills if required.
    • During Covid much of the coaching field switched to online, but a good proportion of clients now feel more comfortable with this method so it endures.
    • Gemma has suffered anxiety in her past and coached herself out of it by reengaging with herself and setting goals to break her anxieties.
    • Self care is a part of taking care of everybody else as you cannot bring your best self to a situation if you are tired and broken. If you want to help as many people as you can, you need to be in a good space.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘I do training for groups of all shapes and sizes and this helped us to win our brand's Health Hero award earlier this year based on the feedback that we got from that training.’ - Gemma

‘That’s where I shifted over the last couple of years with coaching as well. Its prevention rather than cure kind of space.’ – John

‘While a good coach can coach you on anything I think, probably, an even better coach is one of those who could at least signpost you to people who specialise in different areas.’ – Gemma

‘This has, kind of, driven me to step into that spotlight a little bit purely as a means of helping others. It's not something that comes particularly naturally to me, I’m perfectly fine with public speaking, but when it comes to the social media side, the slightly more vulnerable side of it and sharing parts of who I am, it's something that I haven’t found particularly easy.’ – Gemma

  • Aspiring to a Better Future With Andree Funnell

John's guest today is Andree Funnell, who has spent over 20 years working as an HR and training manager in large corporate organisations. In 2002, she left full-time employment to start her own business consultancy, Aspiring Future Competence (AFC) who are based on the Essex/Hertfordshire border. AFC is a triple award-winning learning, development and coaching consultancy created to help others aspire to reach their full potential.

Andree believes that core values and living authentically are the essence of an individual’s personality and behavioural traits. Andree works to support clients who are seeking to improve their self-confidence, self-belief and personal impact.

Andree and John discuss how she helps her clients, her corporate experience, how she broke away and her successful career move into coaching.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Andree helps women to achieve their goals within their career by increasing their confidence and clarity. She helps them achieve things like equal pay or promotion if this is indeed what they want.
    • Having experienced high corporate stress and direct bullying in her job and then escaping it, Andree is perfectly placed to help women realise that they may be in a career that neither empowers or fulfils their needs and that maybe it is time to leave.
    • By increasing our understanding of ourselves and others, our ‘Emotional Quotient’, we can perceive our own life requirements and fulfil them and also recognise others as well.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Many of these ladies that I’m working with have either been put down by a dogmatic boss or in an environment that’s toxic, which is exactly what happened to me.’ – Andree

‘Sometimes you felt that you very much didn’t have a voice. It was very much ego driven. In those seven years I had six different General Managers.’ – Andree

‘If you stop communicating, if you stop talking to each other, if you stop treating each other as human beings and respecting one another and sharing stuff, emotional things, you do grow apart.’ – Andree

‘It was sort of controlling your own outcomes to a degree but also living more purposefully in your space.’ – John

‘My father died not long after I left my job and so did my Uncle. I had two years of sheer hell but I wouldn’t have been able to cope with that whilst I was working seventy hours a week.’ - Andree

This episode's guest is Eugenia Gomez, who through coaching helps to raise humanity’s vibration, guiding women into mastering their thoughts and emotions through introspection, embodiment and creative expression. She also helps women to master their intentions and thoughts and to raise emotionally intelligent children.

John discusses her method of coaching, how we are conditioned to be emotionally numb, the emotional differences between men and women, how our relationships inform our coaching and embarking on the difficult task of self reflection that frees us from our patterned behaviour.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Eugenia coaches women to become aware of the workings of their own emotions and how their behaviours are moulding their children.
    • Coaching starts at the dating stage to find the ideal partner, moving on to the important stage of pregnancy and its hormones and cravings and finally onwards into parenthood.
    • We need to understand how society conditions us to be emotionally numb and the effect this can have on our children’s development. Children are over-stimulated by technology in an attempt to keep them entertained.
    • Eugenia has learned from early mistakes in her own dating life to inform her coaching style. Choosing safe partners because she felt unworthy of more is a trap many women fall into.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘What I want to do is help women embrace all of their emotions, everything, even the dark ones so that they can be truly present in their bodies, in their soul mission, with their soul partner and raising children that are also emotionally aware .’ - Eugenia

‘When we say that children are hyperactive it’s just because they’re being raised with the “laptop” having 1001 tabs open, with a phone beeping constantly. We are born directly into that kind of environment. That’s their normal.’ – Eugenia

‘I think one of the facts that male suicide is higher than female suicide is the fact that they can’t cope.’ – John

‘He was one of the boring ones, 6 years. I knew already after 2 years that I should break up with him but It took me 4 years of facing my fears.’ – Eugenia

‘I always need to point out to people this is not an overnight change. It takes a lot of self reflection, a lot of work to be able to shift away from all of these patterns that are keeping you stuck in these really negative spaces.’ - John

  • Spontaneous And Responsive Desire

When discussing sex within relationships with clients John has found there is often problems with who initiates it, how often it takes place and mismatches in the level of sexual interactions. In this episode John discusses differing sexual motivations and triggers, the misconceptions of sex and the different types of arousal that most of us experience.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    •  If we take the media and entertainment view of sex we would mistakenly be under the impression that it is always motivated by desire.
    • Desire is not a prerequisite to arousal.
    • The two types of arousal most commonly discussed are ‘spontaneous’ and ‘responsive’.
    • Spontaneous desire is an episode of sexual arousal without any external stimulus.
    • Responsive desire is a reaction to a stimulus, a growing interest in sex based on something triggering, such as touch or physical contact.
    • Be aware that like all things that we try to give a label to there would also be a spectrum.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘This portrayal can lead us to believe there is only one type of desire, but if we look at the sex life of most people it is nothing like this at all.’

‘Learning which kind of desire that you lean towards and which your partner leans towards can help in creating a sex life that works for you both.’

‘You either have a body that is sex ready, or a mind that needs to be in the right headspace for sex.’

‘The reason most people struggle with arousal and get performance anxiety is because they are in stress, fight or flight mode, and your brain can’t do both states at the same time.’

  • Financial Management of Relationships

John talks with Doug Bennett, the director of Financial Freedom™, Work Optional Lifestyle Financial Planner™, a mortgage broker, coach, mentor, author and renowned international speaker. He’s been doing financial planning for over 30 years and has been working with well-respected executives, entrepreneurs and business owners in the financial industry and other business realms. He is also the chair of a board of trustees for a charity which helps severely handicapped people connect with the outside world.

John and Doug chat about his goal based approach, his charity work, his life experience, counselling and coaching and some of his philosophies on mental well being.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Doug puts his success down to goal setting and writing goals down on a consistent basis.
    • The charity goes into care homes and communicates with the severely disabled and brings a social element into their lives.
    • Doug has set his goal setting philosophy down in his book “Think Simple, Win Big”.
    • Writing goals on a consistent daily basis without referring back will keep focus.
    • Keep those goals at least in the realm of realism and prepare to work hard to achieve them.
    • Doug has a mindset coach. Even with all his success Doug still needs and recommends professional psychological help to assist with any unforeseen personal blocks to your progress.
    • If anyone gives their opinion on something they’re right. In your head they might be wrong, but in theirs they’re right. You have not followed their path to get to that position so arguing is pointless, explaining your perspective is more useful.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘In 2019 from being six figures in debt with a massive mortgage in 2010 I managed to sell my business for seven figures.’ - Doug

‘I think with mental well-being having goals will help people. Very often we meander through life and if you’re meandering and you’ve not got anything to go for it’s very easy to think about all the things that aren’t going well.’ – Doug

‘The law of attraction will help but you have to work.’ – Doug

‘If you set yourself a massive target you are leaving yourself open to being let down.’ – John

‘Having reflected on that I’ve decided you get me, there’s not two mes, I’m just me. I found out that being me is so much easier because if you try to be somebody else or try to be what other people expect you to be, it’s an act.’ - Doug
