  • Apology Languages

Did you realise that we have an apology language? This is the way we express and like to receive things that are difficult to say, including the phrase “I’m Sorry”. People's preferred apology language can be different from person to person, both giving and receiving apologies, and can fluctuate depending on different circumstances. John discusses the nuances of apologies and offers some support on communication in these difficult circumstances, defining the five different apology languages that we employ.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • The phrase  “I’m sorry” can be enough for some people to move on, but for others their apology language can have more complex or precise requirements.
    • Expressing regret. This apology needs to be expressed with understanding of what you are apologising for and acknowledgement of the pain that has been caused.
    • Accepting responsibility. This is when someone openly admits they were wrong in their actions. They name this action clearly to show that they are aware of this.
    • Making restitution. This includes a way to try and make amends and search for a way to correct the wrong when perhaps something has been broken, damaged, lost or forgotten. It includes restitution to the offended person.
    • Genuinely repenting. Here the person will need to review their actions, have genuine regret for them, and make a commitment to prove they are changing.
    • Requesting forgiveness.  This allows time for the person to process their hurt before things can go back to normal. They cannot move on straight away, they need to feel they have the power and the time to decide if things move forward.
    • Some studies have concluded that there are a specific six steps to an apology and it won't be effective at all if these are not completed;  Expression of regret, explanation of what went wrong, acknowledgement of responsibility, a declaration of independence, an offer of a repair, and a request of forgiveness.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Expressing remorse or regret, taking responsibility, making restitution and asking for forgiveness need to be delivered in a well meaning and sincere way.’

‘You may want to hear something like “I feel ashamed of how I hurt you.’

‘To them there is a significant difference between saying “you’re right” and “I’m wrong”. They have a completely different meaning.’

‘This could be your apology language if you need someone to show they are willing to correct an issue, put their money where their mouth is, for example.’

‘You may want to hear something like “I can only imagine how much pain that caused you. I’m very, very sorry and I won’t do that again. Next time I promise I’ll do it differently.”’

‘As mentioned we all have a preferred apology language but will likely require a bit from each in order to feel satisfied by the “sorry” that comes our way.’

  • The Significance of Family Relationships

John talks to Dominique Brits, a family centred life coach based in Johannesburg. Her passion is developing and deepening relationships within a family setting. As a teacher in both mainstream and special needs settings she has learnt how much we have in common when it comes to family and how a strong, effective, and emotionally healthy family dynamic can increase the quality of  life of all those within it. Dominique discusses her own experiences with family and later relationships, and how she has developed and learned to deal with negative habits and experiences.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Dominique became a life coach after her teaching career and learning from her clients has helped her own family relationships.
    • She facilitates honest communication with her clients by creating a safe space for them to be honest without being judged.
    • Our biggest critic is ourselves. There are lots of things that can inhibit us from speaking out, but self critical thinking is among the most common.
    • Boundaries within family, the amount of freedom of expression and movement, are different from family to family. What we see in other families can make us question our own upbringing.
    • Coaching can help people to see there is no quick fix for changing habits, thought processes and neural pathways.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘It’s just a safe space for them to talk. It’s a safe space for them to really open up and not have that feeling of judgement around something that they’re embarrassed about, something that they’re too afraid to speak about, something they can't find the words for.’ – Dominique

‘Maybe the fear of the reaction of what the outcome is going to be because I've actually told someone what I want or what I need at this moment.’ - John

‘My ‘core wound’ is ‘I am below average’. Having three older sisters where they were doing all of these other things and I couldn’t. Not because I wasn’t able to, but because of that age gap of seven years.’ – Dominique

‘My aim to achieve is really about getting families to communicate. Really, actually listen to each other and understand. A lot of parents when their teens come to me go ‘here’s my teen, she’s 16 and now listen to me.’’ - Dominique

‘When you’re triggered or when something happens when you would have usually done this, you’ve now got another way of saying, ‘ actually do I want to do this anymore?’’ – John

  • A Deep Dive Into Coaching

Many people have never had counselling or coaching of any kind, so in this episode, to provide a comprehensive insight into what this involves, John allows us to sit in on a session with a client. By listening in, you will be able to gain an understanding of the interaction in a coaching session and how much progress and clarity can be achieved.

Want to be able to create healthy relationships in your life?  Why not book in for a complimentary call and we can discuss how you can get started with some new types of relationships? - https://calendly.com/johnkennycoaching/30min

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • John starts by asking the client why he is there and what he hopes to get out of the session. In this case it is low self-esteem, leading to trouble finding relationships due to, what he refers to as, ‘low emotional intelligence’.
    • Self revelation is very prevalent in this session. “Wow, that is interesting looking at it like that.” In this discussion you will be able to see how coaching allows you to take a detailed look at how you behave and feel about yourself.
    • John leads his client through memories of his past, allowing him to make his own links to patterns of behaviour he uses in his current life and relationships.
    • At the close of the session John summarises what has been discussed and achieved, and sets out  a plan for progress in the future.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘It’s a fear of upsetting other people. Yes, thank you for teasing that out of me, it wasn’t on the tip of my tongue. Yeah, but I'm so desperately bending over backwards to make sure that I don’t upset anybody.’

‘Would you say that’s what your general self-talk is? I mean it comes back to you not feeling worthy?’

‘It’s natural for them to want me to be what they thought of as happy.’

‘I felt like I wanted to be honest with one of my parents about that aspect of me while one of them was still around.’

‘There’s that sort of silent expectation that you’ve always experienced with your parents, even though they weren’t overly controlling and demanding of you. There did seem to be something that you developed, a sense within yourself that there was an expectation from them, that maybe led to a difficulty with acceptance from yourself.’

  • How To Create Some Love

A passionate conversation with Janie Charlot, the definition of a self-made, universe-directed woman.
Janie went to university with dreams of becoming a pharmacist but became a nurse practitioner instead. Not wanting to compromise who she was for any job, she created and founded NP (Nurse Practitioners) For Hire, a collaborative effort between many medical professionals to bring consulting and health advice and management to the metro Atlanta area and beyond.

Janie grounds her medical practice in a deep spirituality. She has also authored two different books and has a seemingly boundless well of energy.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    - the universe has a vibration and if you act in “I am” statements, the universe will acknowledge that vibration and bring you a future more aligned with that energy.

      - That traditional medicine numbs our pain but doesn’t treat the cause. We need to look at our wounds more holistically and take physical, mental, and spiritual paths to heal them.

    • Coming from financially very little, but having a parent who loved her unconditionally, taught Janie a lot about service and about doing things with no expectation of anything done in “return”. She has a
    • She wants to educate and empower people to take charge of their own health and well-being through the experience she has had both with becoming a nurse and becoming attuned to love.

    BEST MOMENTS

    - “If we could also look to nature to clear the disease, then we could stop relying so much on pharmaceuticals. It is a balance. Sometimes we do have to take medication until we are emotionally and mentally equipped with the resources to tap into nature and tap into healing those parts of ourselves. Because that does require going deeper. It requires going deeper and healing.”

    - “We are programmed that way (to fear). And I think if we could get to unconditional divine self-love within, … we're wide open, because now you can be who you need to be…and I don't have to control you, I can allow you to grow at your own time, in your own space.”

    - “But when you put something out to the universe, it conspires to bring it to you. I started to experience in awakening to I would call it a love vibration. When I walked outside, I was seeing things that has always been there, but I was seeing the love in it.”

    - “We must speak from a space of I am or already have it. So: I have a divine love. I am divine love. And then the more I did that, that vibration took over me internally and then I was a magnet for it.”

    ABOUT THE GUEST

Janie Charlot proves that “though she be but little, she is fierce”.

Born to a single mother in Church Point, Louisiana, she graduated high school at the top of her class. She enrolled at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, originally with visions of becoming a pharmacist, but changed her major to nursing when she was not accepted to her program of choice.
After graduation she wanted to continue to innovate the healthcare field, so she was inspired to start NP Hired, an Atlanta-based company that provides healthcare services on a national and international level.

They use technology to provide all types of medical services, including treatment of minor conditions and management of chronic illnesses.

Janie has spun her passion for healthcare advocacy and helping others into a successful business.

On top of that, she is the author of two books, and lives her life from a place of spiritual strength.

  • Understanding The Impacts of Relationships

Today John reads from his book “The People Programme”. PEOPLE is an acronym for the six titles of the modules of his coaching program; Problems, Emotions, Operate, Patterns, Likelihood and Enhance. It helps us to understand the current occurrences in our lives based on past events, understanding those around us, any programmed patterns of behaviour we have and how we can change and move forward.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • John reads about how his past experiences from childhood led to his current thoughts and opinions on relationships.
    • Lacking attention turned John into a bit of an extrovert and his parents examples left him confused on how relationships were supposed to be.
    • A favoured brother, the responsibility to apologise and being second all created coping strategies that John used to navigate his environment efficiently.
    • Children learn at a deeper and more permanent level and these lessons are very hard to shift in later life.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘ What is not funny and is completely overlooked from reciting this story is that I’m a young child out late by myself in the dark. I had not been seen for hours, obviously I had missed my dinner, and my brother is all tucked up in bed and I haven’t even been missed.’

‘When anything happened where I was told off, I would always be the one made to apologise and make things right. Otherwise I was just ignored and made to stay in my room until I had.’

‘My brain was learning how I could survive. That’s right, survive. My young brains only job at that age was to learn how to keep me alive, how to cope with all the things that were happening and for me to get through it all.’

‘If something feels unknown or uncomfortable I must check in with myself and give it a go before I dismiss it immediately.’

  • How To Melt Your Partner With Massage

In todays episode John discusses how to increase intimacy between you and your partner using relaxing massage techniques. He chats with Denis Merkas, founder of Melt Massage for Couples which teaches couples how to use massage techniques in their own homes and has specialised in this field for a number of years. Denis has taught over 50,000 couples on how to use massage in their daily lives and talks about how his experiences have led and influenced him in his profession and private life. They discuss the nuances and complications of relationships and offer insight into keeping them fresh and exciting.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Denis has moved his teaching online to reach a maximum number of couples at a time. This creates a good atmosphere of a shared experience.
    • His background and upbringing informed his decision to start teaching couples massage. Physical touch is a lot of peoples ‘Love Language’ and massage can facilitate this.
    • Massage can be utilised to initiate a sexual interaction but can just be used as relaxation and stress relief so its versatility within relationships is useful.
    • New experiences are the key to keeping relationships fun.

    BEST MOMENTS

'I was thinking how do I really woo this girl with my massage technique and how do I do it differently to what I do at work?’

‘You forget that there are other people in the room, if someone moans, the rest of the class is like “oh I’m a little bit jealous” and people are laughing and the energy is great in the room.’

‘We need to find out ways to keep it exciting, to keep it new and fresh and it’s really, really hard. Easily 99% of the listeners here will do the same date night on a regular basis just because we know what it is.’

‘After that you take your time. The classes get harder, the techniques get more difficult. We start looking for knots, areas of tension. I show you how to use your thumbs, how to use your hands effectively so your hands don’t get tired.’

  • Signs Somebody Likes You

In this episode, John talks about a recent blog he wrote that gained wide attention and generated a lot of conversation, ways to improve your confidence and what signs to show when you think you have met that special someone.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Non verbal indications of showing interest in who you desire, can be just as important as verbal ones.
    • With the world seemingly reopening, noticing the signs that someone could be using will become more and more relevant.
    • Noticing not only the signs someone could be sending you, but also the ones that you project, is vitally important.

    BEST MOMENTS

'Being around someone who likes you, has a physical impact on their state. It can make them nervous and that can lead to a form of good stress'

'When you’re looking in their eyes, if their pupils are dilating, it’s been scientifically proven they do dilate when we see something we like '

'People have a tendency to take your side when they like you…they will want to see you’re ok and will want to defend you wherever possible'

  • Are We As Choosy About Relationships As We Think?

In this episode, John talks about how we, as human beings craving connection, we may not be as selective as we are led to believe when it comes to building new relationships and creating new connections.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Studies show that people are not always selective when it comes to choosing a partner. During speed test studies, people said yes to 40% of their dating options.
    • People often experience guilt-like feelings when making the decision to remain with a partner, which can lead to them simply staying put so as not to cause offence.
    • Even after a relationship is dissolved, these decisions don't always stick, leading to an on-again, off-again situation, instead of us striking out and finding someone new.

    BEST MOMENTS

'Romantic relationships are a very emotionally charged aspect of people's lives'

'The path that leads to a long term relationship seems easier than the path that leads us to being single'

'It's hard to walk away for good'

  • 10 Things That Suggest Your Relationship Isn't As Good As You Make Out

We often tell ourselves and others that our relationship with our partner is far stronger than it really is, but as John discusses in this first show of the year, it might be time for a reality check.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • As we move through a relationship, we tend to accumulate more and more in the way of emotional anchors, such as children or financial arrangements. These can act as a block when it comes to motivating ourselves to leave an unhappy relationship.
    • Often, when we are unhappy, we lose ourselves in other tasks such as work or physical activities. This is known as an avoidance tactic.
    • When we look for external reasons to rationalise or justify our situation, we end up bypassing the root cause of the problems.
    • Projection is something that is often used to shield us from difficult feelings that may overwhelm us. This causes us to remain in a denial space where we are simply trying to convince ourselves to remain.

    BEST MOMENTS

'People stick together even though they are unhappy'

'We go into what is known as an ego defence'

'These strategies help us to minimise our emotions'

'Denial is a great avoidance strategy'

  • From Codependent To Independent

This week John is in conversation with a special guest - one who has lived through a codependent relationship, and who has emerged as independent from the other side. It's a rare, highly personal conversation from someone with a unique perspective on this particular compulsion, and which may help to empower those who may not yet realise that their own relationship may be an unhealthy one.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • When we become codependent, we lose part of ourselves - our identities. We hand control to a person, and thereby give part of ourselves away.
    • Previous generations have always associated their development in life by their attachments. These days, we are encouraged to be more independent, and gender roles in society help to promote this.
    • Codependency can creep in without realising it. We begin a certain way, and then one day find that we have become unrecognisable to ourselves.

    BEST MOMENTS

'The root of codependency is the loss of the self'

'It was a very gendered experience'

'It's as though you somehow believe you are rooted with each other'

'It was like I'd created a Frankenstein'
