Eye Emergencies and Treatment
Paul discussed eye emergencies, sharing a personal story about a friend who experienced an eye stroke caused by a carotid artery issue. The friend's condition was detected early when a piece of plaque traveled to his retina, leading to a stent placement in his carotid artery and preventing further emboli. Paul noted that eye emergencies can range from benign to catastrophic, and he sees them frequently in his practice.
Emergency Eye Conditions Treatment
Paul explained the common eye conditions treated in the emergency department, starting with conjunctival infections which are often viral but can be bacterial, particularly in contact lens wearers who risk corneal ulcers. He described how corneal abrasions can feel like something is in the eye and are treated with antibiotic eye drops, and detailed the procedure for removing foreign metal particles from the cornea, including the removal of rust rings that can cause visual problems. Paul noted that these procedures are performed with assistance from staff to help hold the eye open during the delicate process.
Types of Glaucoma and Testing
Paul explained two types of glaucoma to Terry: acute angle closure glaucoma, which causes sudden pressure buildup requiring immediate treatment with eye drops to relieve pressure, and chronic glaucoma, which involves diffuse pressure increase and requires regular monitoring. Paul described the testing methods used to measure eye pressure, including the traditional Schiotz tonometer and modern Tono Pen devices used in emergency departments. The discussion concluded with Paul mentioning plans to cover retinal issues and brain-related visual disturbances in future episodes.
Eye Conditions and Podcast Update
