In this episode we talk with Jackie Paaso, originally a mogul skier, then a big mountain freeride skier, ski mom, co-founder of SAFE AS clinics and now a movie star.  Jackie joins us from her home in Sweden and tells us about her ski journey.

Jackie learned to ski in New England at the mountains outside of Boston, and then at Sunday River (Maine).  Jackie’s family started as weekend warriors, commuting up to the mountains from the Boston area and eventually moved up to Maine. 

Jackie’s walks us through how freeride skiing competitions work, we learned that the judging is definitely more of an art than a science.  The more challenging sections of the venue (steeper, bigger cliffs) will score higher and a lot of it is how the skier handles the terrain.  The judges are viewing from the bottom of the venue (with binoculars) and the skiers need to pick their line with that in mind.

We were so excited to hear about Jackie’s new movie (Here Hold My Kid) that she made with her friend Elyse Saugstad, also a freeride ski mom.  Jackie tells us about what inspired them to create this movie and how they made it happen.  When we spoke to Jackie the movie was not yet released, but now you can watch it here on Redbull TV!  Jackie and Elyse had their own children (ages 1 & 2) in the movie. 

Jackie is also a founder of SAFE AS clinics, which started as a women focused avalanche safety program.  SAFE AS was started after Jackie’s friend Elyse was caught in an avalanche at Steve’s Pass and was the only survivor.

In this episode we talk with Lynsey Dyer, an athlete, artist and advocate, co-founder of SheJumps.org, founder of Unicorn Picnic and an alliance athlete for Protect Our Winters (POW). 

Lynsey tells us about her early childhood ski days in Sun Valley, Idaho with her family. Lynsey was on her local ski team from a young age and reflects on the many benefits and skills that she still draws on today.  When the alpine ski racing path was no longer fun for her, Lynsey switched over to freeride. Lynsey has had a long and incredibly successful career as a big mountain skier. 

Lynsey’s won every big mountain competition she’s entered, been awarded Female Skier of the Year by Powder and Freeskier Magazines multiple times, starred in films and commercials from Teton Gravity Research to Warren Miller. 

As a filmmaker herself, Lynsey produced and directed the first all female ski film Pretty Faces after fundraising on Kickstarter.  Pretty Faces went on to become iconic selling out shows, winning awards and making the industry more inclusive.  

Next we learned more about SheJumps.org.

As a Protect Our Winters Alliance Athlete, Lynsey tells us about the organization and why she prioritizes protecting our environment. 

We most loved hearing about how Lynsey’s adjusting to motherhood including how she’s changed her mindset and risk taking profile. And someday we hope to jump off a cliff with Lynsey, but the invitation hasn’t yet arrived :)

In this episode, we share our tips on caring for your technical ski garments and keeping them waterproofed. Our ski clothes get dirty and washing them is an important part of their maintenance. But it’s important to use the right products when washing your ski clothes. 

We are using Nixwax Hardshell Cleaning and Waterproofing products. We are also trying a spray for our softshell garments (linked below). 

Read the instructions for measurement and water temperature and don’t wait until the last minute to waterproof because the products need at least 24 hours to cure.

Lisa Will is a ski mom and the founder of Stonz, an outdoor apparel and footwear company for kids ages 0-6 years.  Lisa walks us through the problems she kept running into with her own kid’s outdoor apparel and how that led her to the decision to start Stonz.  Stonz is on a mission make it easy to get kids outdoors no matter the weather. They have a wide range of kids outdoor gear from snow boots (the lightest winter boot on the market), to mittens and snow suits. 

Lisa walks us through her career path and the early days starting Stonz. Wherever Lisa saw a problem with kids outdoor apparel, she set out to find a solution. Lisa makes sure all her products are well made, so they can be passed down and stay out of landfills. Stonz products are also vegan-friendly and free from harmful chemicals. 

We learn about product testing and feedback and some new products planned for the coming year. 

Lisa also gives us a great overview of her home mountain of Whistler Blackcomb, complete with year round activity recommendations.

Kelly Brush is a ski mom, the founder of the Kelly Brush Foundation (KBF), a pediatric nurse practitioner, biker, golfer and weekend adventurer. Kelly started the Kelly Brush Foundation after a college ski racing accident left her with a severe spinal cord injury at the T 7-8 level, fractured 4 ribs, fractured a vertebra in her neck, and a collapsed lung.

Kelly had the ultimate growth mindset, and with the help of her parents set out to start the KBF to change racing safety procedures to prevent this type of accident from happening again. Today the Kelly Brush Foundation has expanded to include a variety of programs and grants that inspire and empower people with spinal cord injuries to lead active and engaged lives.

Kelly grew up skiing in Vermont, chasing her friends and family around the slopes of Stowe. At age 7 she got a taste of ski racing and going fast and fell in love with the sport.  Kelly was a strong skier in high school at the Green Mountain Valley School (Waitsfield, VT) and landed a spot on the Middlebury College NCAA Alpine Ski Team. 

Kelly tells us about her own adaptive ski equipment, skiing with her family, and their favorite apres ski traditions.
