56 games into the World Cup and we're down to the last eight. And England are still there! A World Cup that many were unsure about has so far been one of the most memorable. There have been plenty of upsets, some new stars have shone and for the most part VAR hasn't been as terrible as some people (especially us) feared. Join Graham, Terry and Jan as they look back at the group stage and the first knockout round, and how the rest of tournament could play out. Graham also reports back on his time in St Peterburg where he went to see Brazil take on Costa Rica and Argentina take on Nigeria. Oh yes, and it's totally coming home. The World Cup is finally upon us and a whole month of football lies ahead. To say we're a little excited is a bit of an understatement. Graham, Terry and Jan attempt to predict the entire tournament with the help of some familiar voices. Manuel Veth from the Futbolgrad network of podcasts, makes a welcome return to the podcast to give his appraisal of the host and of the current holders. Ed Carter drops by, in the calm before the 200% podcast produces a glut of content for the tournament and The Stiles Council's Chris Nee tries his best to rein in our unbridled enthusiasm for Gareth Southgate's young England squad. Who will get to the final? Who will choke? Listen now, before the actual results prove us hopelessly wrong. When is a World Cup not a World Cup? When it's one contested by countries that aren't technically countries. The ConIFA World Football Cup started life on 2014 and offers nations and peoples whose football teams aren't affliated to FIFA the chance to take part in a global tournament. For our first summer special of 2018, we present a change to our usual offering: Graham, Terry and Jan take the short trip to the home of Carshalton Athletic to watch international football with a difference. Join them for some half time chat as they watch the hosts Barawa take on Cascadia from the West Coast of North America. Bale's spectacular chilena, Karius's goalkeeping howlers and Sergio Ramos's dark arts against Mo Salah provided more talking points than a decade of usual Champions League finals. Graham, Terry and Jan add their voices to the discussion as well looking at the weekends play-off finals. And as a neat way to tie up our last regular episode of season 2017/18, Jan also looks forward to happier times ahead for his club Sunderland after their takeover announced this month. Gareth Southgate has named his 23 man England squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. While Joe Hart, Jack Wilshere and Adam Lallana are notable absentees none of them are surprising omissions. So what do Graham Terry and Jan make of the list of players who will be on the plane? Should the likes of Ryan Sessegnon or Jadon Sancho have been included? We also get a chance to discuss the FA Cup final, VAR shenanigans in the closing stages of the DFB Pokal and the correct pronunciation of Shrewsbury. Last week it was announced that Sky Sports had lost the UK rights to show La Liga from the start of next season, losing out to a little-known streaming company Eleven Sports. It's currently unclear what Eleven plan to do with their rights package but it looks unlikely that fans of the Spanish League in the UK will be able to watch live games without taking out yet another subscription. Since breaking Sky's exclusive hold on Premier League rights the cost for consumers has continued to spiral upward as companies pass on their winning bids to the armchair fans. With the addition of streaming platforms, just how many ways are football fans willing to pay to see their club? At the same time, the Premier League has failed to sell all the packages for the next TV deal and looks set to receive less money than it did for the previous deal. With social media giants and tech companies seemingly unwilling to play the same game as Sky and BT Sports when it comes to bidding for sports rights, will the value of the Premier League continue to drop?
