This week on The Temple of Surf, we are joined by a true guardian of surfing heritage: Craig Baird, the long-standing curator of the Australian National Surfing Museum in Torquay. For nearly three decades, Craig has played a pivotal role in preserving the culture, history, and soul of Australian surfing, helping transform the museum into one of the world’s most important institutions dedicated to the sport.

Craig’s journey into the surf world began early. Growing up along the coast between Barwon Heads and Ocean Grove, he picked up surfing at just 10 years old. First exploring the rivers and then paddling out into the open ocean, he quickly developed a passion that would shape the rest of his life. By the age of 15, he was already surfing with confidence and immersing himself in the local surf culture.

Straight out of school, Craig began working in the surf industry, running a surf shop and eventually honing his creative skills airbrushing t-shirts and spray-painting surfboards for major Australian brands. This hands-on experience gave him an intimate understanding of surfboard design, materials, and craftsmanship knowledge that would later prove invaluable in his role at the museum.

As curator, Craig oversees a remarkable collection of over 12,000 items, including vintage boards, photographs, memorabilia, and stories that span generations. His work isn’t just about archiving history, it’s about storytelling. Through carefully curated exhibits, Craig brings to life the pioneers of Australian surfing, the cultural revolutions of the '60s and '70s, and the local legends who shaped the waves and the community around them.

In this episode, Craig shares his personal path from being a passionate surfer and artist to becoming the caretaker of Australia’s rich surfing legacy. Craig Hollingsworth began shaping boards in the early 1970s, during one of the most vibrant and innovative periods in surfing history. Raised in Southern California and deeply immersed in the surf scene, Craig quickly gained recognition not just as a skilled surfer, but as a master craftsman. His boards have become known for their clean lines, functionality, and timeless design—bridging the gap between classic soul and modern performance.

Throughout his prolific career, Craig has shaped for iconic labels including Lightning Bolt, Hansen, Duke Kahanamoku, Mike Hynson Surfboards, StarBolt, and Local Motion. But perhaps his most renowned contribution is the legendary Lightning Bolt “Pipeliner”, a beautifully refined single-fin gun designed to tackle the heavy waves of the North Shore. Even decades after its creation, it remains a symbol of power, flow, and Hawaiian surf legacy.

In this episode, Craig opens up about his journey through the golden era of surfboard design, what it was like shaping for and alongside legends, and how he continues to innovate and shape boards today. This week on The Temple of Surf podcast, we welcome one of the most influential figures in the history of wakeboarding and watersports: Jimmy Redmon, founder of Liquid Force.

Few individuals have had as profound an impact on a sport as Jimmy has on wakeboarding. A true innovator, designer, and visionary, Jimmy helped create and guide wakeboarding from its experimental beginnings in the 1980s into a global phenomenon. His journey started with Redline Designs, where he shaped some of the very first boards with foot straps offering riders an entirely new way to interact with the water.

In 1988, he co-founded the World Wakeboard Association (WWA) to give the sport structure and credibility. But perhaps his most defining legacy began in 1995, when he teamed up with Tony Finn to launch Liquid Force. What started as a dream quickly became a powerhouse brand, leading the charge in wakeboard, wakesurf, and foil innovation.

In this episode, Jimmy takes us behind the scenes of that journey—sharing stories from the early, wild days of wakeboarding when there were no rules, just creativity and passion. He talks about the birth of iconic boards like the Flight 69, the importance of rider feedback in design, and how Liquid Force stayed ahead of the curve by constantly innovating and pushing the boundaries of what was possible.
