The Obsessive client can be very hard on themselves, they're perfectionists.

Often they want to control the external world, as well as their internal world, so they don't need to feel.

Their history can be where they've been ‘missed’ or one which has had little or no validation.

In the podcast when we are talking about controlling the environment and controlling people, it's all about protection, safety and security.

The clients scare is usually from the parent or the significant caretaker who has in some way shamed them, neglected them, or let them down.

That Critical Parent can then be internalised so the client then internally tells themselves off.

Underneath all the hurt, there is a child who has been mishandled, usually not understood, and probably not validated.

Often the number one thing, especially with the Obsessive Client is to remember the channel for connection is usually their thinking (cognition).

How we work with different clients - The withdrawn client

We look at how we work with the withdrawn client in the therapy room.

The process that both the therapist and client go through.

How integration happens over time.

The withdrawn client needs a very patient experience in psychotherapy, the therapist may just catch a glimpse of the clients younger self, which is so protected by the clients social self. 

If the therapist can 'meet' the client in that moment. It's possible to see the soul or the heart of their real self. 

The withdrawn client may only show this for just a few moments , and that's when you need to really meet them if possible, before they withdraw even further.

It is going to be slow work because the withdrawn client may allow themselves to be more honest with you, so they can feel their own feelings internally, then the inner critic may come out and they may regress even further. 

The therapy process with a withdrawn client takes time.

Treatment Contracts and sessional contracts 

Eric Berne the originator of Transactional Analysis (TA) was a firm advocate of contracting. 

He saw contacting as  a 'bi lateral' agreement towards a specific outcome.  

In this episode Bob and Jacci explore. 

Do we give ‘homework so the client can process and integrate parts of themselves in-between sessions?  

Journaling – Is it a good thing? Bob kept a diary from the age of 21 to 33 before he entered therapy at 35, he says’ keeping a diary is such a cathartic expression.  

Educative Therapy Enabling the client to take ownership, not only of knowledge they didn’t know but also part of their own history emotionally too. !!CAVIAT!! Check out the clients support mechanisms prior to suggesting learning outside the therapy room.  

Disadvantages of psychological contracts. They can be task driven encouraging the adaptive part of the client. Focuses of awareness and interruptions to contact can be activated with contracting.  

Client led contracting can also be used in some modalities of therapy.  

Brief task driven contracts can be useful for some clients as can exploratory contracts. CBT is often short-term task driven specific and measurable.  

Flexibility within the therapeutic process around contracting is important. 

Both therapist and client need to know the direction the therapy is going in order to maintain the bi lateral contract
