Eric Carlsson interviews friend and fellow UW history alumnus Paul Grant on Paul's new book, Healing and Power in Ghana: Early Indigenous Expressions of Christianity (Baylor, 2020). Paul shares about his upbringing as a missionary kid, his fascination with the Gold Coast, and his efforts to try to understand both missionaries and Ghanan Christians on their own terms. The book, and this discussion, shed light on major themes in the history of global Christianity--a subject American Christians all too often ignore.

Melissa recently interviewed anthropologist Christine Jeske about her new book, The Laziness Myth: Narratives of Work and the Good Life in South Africa (Cornell, 2020). Christine's extensive fieldwork in South Africa is the basis for this wide-ranging conversation on the nature of vocation, the structural barriers to vocational fulfillment in both South Africa and the United States, and Christine's reflections on how Christians should reimagine the "good life" in the twenty-first century. 

Christine Jeske is an Associate Professor of Cultural Anthropology at Wheaton College (Wheaton, IL) and author of several books. She is also an alumnus of UW-Madison.

In his important new book, Science, Religion, and the Protestant Tradition: Retracing the Origins of Conflict (University of Pittsburgh Press, 2019), James examines the intellectual and religious terrain of the late nineteenth century and especially John William Draper and Andrew Dickson White, two of the figures often credited with originating the conflict idea. James revises our understanding of this crucial episode, as well as discusses his own biography and his understanding of Christian scholarship.
